General

  • Family-run, family-friendly, clean and welcoming site
  • A 20-minute drive from Bath and Longleat; 45 mins from Cheddar Gorge
  • Small shop, spotless facilities and safe space for kids to play

Kids do love this Somerset site. As do their folks, and other grownups, and sorts who come for nearby Longleat Safari Park or to plunge into the ancient splendours of nearby Bath and Cheddar (particularly as this site can sell you discount tickets for Longleat and Cheddar Gorge for bargain days out…)

Although it's not a big site, family-run Pitchperfect Camping is perfectly set up for stays – '[we were] looked after better than some 5* hotels' was the verdict of one previous guest – with first-rate facilities, friendly welcoming hosts, and tiptop views of the surrounding Somerset countryside.

As you'd expect, this is a family-friendly site and has baby bathing and baby changing facilities available among its clean amenities; for childish leisure, there's a big grass meadow for running around in and/or zooming around on bikes – and it's all within easy viewing distance of the pitches to make life stress-free for the grownups too. There's also a small central playground with swings, a slide, a sandpit and a trampoline.

Site facilities include free hot showers, a family unit also suitable for disabled guests, and a field shelter with washing-up area, two fridges and freezers, a microwave and plenty of cooking kits and crockery to borrow. A washing machine and tumble dryer are available for a reasonable charge.

The Pitchperfect shop is small but well stocked, selling local produce including the site's own fresh free-range eggs and homegrown veg, locally produced beer and (a must in these parts) crisp Somerset cider.

We wanted to take our grandchildren away from a couple of days as they have had a bit of a rough time recently So glad we chose Pitchperfect! My husband took his car with all the equipment and found check in super easy with all the CV 19 safety measures in place without it being taking anything away from the happy feel of the site. He was happy to given an info pack and was delighted at the very generous pitch size and level ground which had its own picnic bench and which easily accommodated our large tent and 2 cars. I arrived a little after with the kids (7&10) and dog. It was so lovely that they immediately could go off and play and still be in sight as the layout of the site means all the pitches have full view of the play area. Quiet time is a very sensible 22:30 ~ 07:30 which was adhered to without any feeling of killjoyness. I was a little worried that my kids may find the play area too young for them but they spent 90% of our stay there making friends and just doing what kids should be doing. You can hire firepits so we all enjoyed sitting round ours in the evening toasting marshmallows. We did not once hear an 'I'm bored Granny'. The shop is small but oh so sensible as will let you open a tab which meant my two could run down and chose an ice lolly and the staff very patient and friendly. I noticed the fridge had wine and cider at very reasonable prices and you can also buy very generously filled breakfast baps in the mornings. The toilet and shower facilities are excellent - so hygienic and clean and allow for social distancing without feeling like you're being overly restricted. There are also washing machines and tumble driers and a Welsh dresser of crockery and cutlery you can borrow if needed. All in all a super little camp with beautiful setting with horses and sheep. Perfect for unwinding and being a family. It was lovely to be able to take our dog too as lots of other guests had also . So well thought out. 10/10. The kids can't wait to return!

We all had a wonderful time at this camp site. It is in a beautiful location, a very flat, large field with children’s play equipment in the middle so they are far enough not to be heard but near enough to be seen! The toilet block and washing stations were all impeccably clean with excellent social distancing and COVID prevention systems clearly in place. The family were very welcoming. I can’t fault this site and I have been to many over the years. Thank you.

Local attractions

You might not be too flabbergasted to learn that nearby Somerset spa town and UNESCO World Heritage Site Bath is best known for its baths from the times of togas, including The Roman Baths complex with bathhouse and temple, restaurant and museum.

While you're in town, also have a wander around Bath Abbey, the Jane Austen Centre and, for a dip, to the Thermae Bath Spa; if you're around in the evenings, have a music, comedy or club night at award-winning Komedia in the former Beau Nash Picture House.

Other visitors to these parts quite rightly make it a mission to delve into the grate sights of Cheddar Caves and Gorge, the splendid limestone gorge grooved into the Mendip Hills, and of Wookey Hole Caves, the vast caverns to the southern side of the hills.

You could also have a day in Bristol, for its museums, galleries, theatres, live music and over 4,000 listed buildings, and one or two in Shepton Mallet, for the many events of the Bath and West Showground.
