Adventure Pirate: Pitches in the woods

General

  • Wild camping site on an outdoor activity centre five miles from Poole
  • A 10-minute drive from Poole and half an hour from the Jurassic Coast
  • Activities on site including archery, mountain biking and axe throwing

From pottering about Poole and scoping out the Jurassic Coast to crossbow shooting, big tree climbing and mountain biking on site, you’ll want to get everyone on deck for a break at Adventure Pirate, five miles from Poole. This Dorset site has classic wild camping and you’ll really be able to muck in, as it’s attached to an activity centre that runs a bucketload of outdoor activities.

You’ll need to roll up with all your equipment here (tents or bivvies and nibbles and drinks included), as there are no facilities other than a couple of composting toilets, a drinking water tap, a washing-up station and some rubbish bins. Once you’ve left your car in the car park and hauled your kit to your chosen pitch in one of the site’s trolleys, you’ll be going fully wild, with ground fires permitted to keep you feeling toasty.

There are five acres of safe woodlands on site, so the kids are free to go off and build dens, get muddy or play games. On top of that, you may very well leave with a new skill under your belt, as the site runs activities including axe throwing, archery, crossbow or air rifle shooting, big tree climbing, survival, nerf battles and mountain biking (book ahead to avoid disappointment, as slots fill up fast).

For a drink to wash all those activities down or a meal to get your energy levels back on track, Lytchett Minster has a couple of pubs 15 minutes’ walk away or Poole’s got its own tasty dining scene, 10 minutes’ drive away.

Please note

Minimum spacing of 5 metres between pitches.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Bookings must not be for more than 14 consecutive nights.

Please note that the toilet facilities are unisex.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

If reception is closed on arrival: please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.

The site is very unique compare to the classic camp site that you have just a field. The site is full of trees that makes you feel deeper in the forest and away from civilization. Not to mention how many different activities the owner have made for kids and adults. I highly recommend the place for the ones that want to escape from the city and also stay active and have a lot of fun.

    What's not to like.
This is my second stay this year, first I stayed on my own, this time I came with my sister.
Was late getting there on Thursday and got a call from Jack to ask if I needed some wood for the weend, which was great as I hadn't got any. He continued to be a great help all weekend and a great character, had some laughs. We also took part in some acticities thanks to Meg who came over and let us know what was going on that day. We took part in axe throwing and rifle shooting. Meg was a great instructor who was very knowlegeable of her weapons and the delivery of the activity was controlled but with humour and very supportive. Loved the competitions!!.

It was an amazing weekend thank you and we are now planning on bringing the rest of the family in Spring to compete in all acticities and camp for a very long weekend.

James must be very proud of his site and staff, who were all very welcoming and friendly.

Thank you once again to all at Adventure Pirates for a beautiful, clean ,well kept setting.

Don't know if there is Wifi as I didn't even look.

This campsite was brilliant! You can pick your own spot which we loved, there’s little fire pits scattered around which you can chose to camp by and light a fire which is super cool! We also had a dog with us and she had the best little holiday! So much room for her to run around and also explore the forest! There is a compost toilet block which are kept really clean and are more than what we expected for wild camping 😊 We had a look around at the activities they offer onsite which looked super cool and we will definitely be coming back and sharing our little gem of a campsite with friends and family! They also have a little shack shop on site if you need anything. The owners are lovely people as well and before arrival communication is also really good and informative. 100% recommend this place to everyone!

Wow, what a great find. Nice size pitches in the woods. Ground fires allowed. From late afternoon, a very quiet site. I was on my own, but I could see this site will be great for families. Bear in mind this is an activity Center so can get a bit noisy during the day. No big deal for me, as I was away during some of the day. Nice little shop selling tea and snacks. Compost toilets were very clean.

Local attractions

Activities aren't limited to the site – and that’s for certain at Farmer Palmer's Farm Park (five minutes’ drive). As well as bringing together a farm fantasy with interactive animal activities, this site has indoor and outdoor play areas and woodland trails and a maze (perhaps one of the only places you’ll want to get lost on purpose).

Local beaches could certainly count as a playground of their own too, as beach sports and watersports are available for a chock-a-block day in Bournemouth (25 minutes), a nice contrast to the more austere Victorian parks and gardens, museums and galleries in the town. Then, of course, there’s Poole (10 minutes), with the riveting water rides at Splashdown and the harbour for windsurfing, kayaking and the works.

You’ll surely want to take a bite out of the Jurassic Coast too, given that it’s only half an hour’s drive away. Whether it’s a scramble over Dancing Ledge (half an hour), a climb to see Old Harry Rocks (half an hour) or a duck into the old quarry caves at Winspit Quarry (35 minutes), this scenic part of the coast is crammed with beauty spots.

Must see

  • Kingston Lacy House and Gardens (4.9 miles)
  • Brownsea Island (5.8 miles)
  • Studland Beach and Nature Reserve (7.0 miles)
