  • Longleat safari park half an hour’s drive and Stonehenge 40 minutes
  • Local pub, farm shops and woodland walks within five minutes’ drive
Dorset bound and looking for somewhere peaceful to lay your head? At 10 minutes’ drive from Gillingham, Fred’s Field is a rural pop-up site named in memory of the owners’ dog Fred, who liked having a snooze in this field. It’s a welcoming and budget-friendly space where you can watch colourful sunsets on cloudless evenings and relax under the stars (something Fred also loved to do). Pitches aren’t set so you can make your camp anywhere; most of the field is flat for easy pitching. Once set up, you can borrow handmade pallet beds for stargazing, and there are nature trails, outdoor activities and play equipment for all ages. Everybody, from walkers and backpackers to cyclists, couples, families and kids – and their dogs, of course – are welcome on site. Duncliffe Woods are a 15 minutes’ walk/five minutes’ drive for a good stretch of the paws, and there’s a dog park five minutes away by car. The pitching field is surrounded by greenery home to a deer family, barn owls and hares. The free-range chickens provide eggs that you can buy on site, and you can also purchase a fire-starting kit of kindling and logs for your campfires, although you’re welcome to bring your own wood too. There’s a pub 30 minutes away on foot; Shaftesbury (10 minutes’ drive) is a handy hub for cafés, pubs and supermarkets. Fred’s Field is also 40 minutes’ drive from Stonehenge and an hour to Lulworth Cove.
