  • Quiet rural pop-up site 10 minutes’ drive from Gillingham in Dorset
  • Longleat safari park half an hour’s drive and Stonehenge 40 minutes
  • Local pub, farm shops and woodland walks within five minutes’ drive
Dorset bound and looking for somewhere peaceful to lay your head? About 10 minutes’ drive from Gillingham, Fred’s Field is a rural pop-up site named in memory of the owners’ dog Fred, who liked having a snooze in this field. It’s a welcoming and budget-friendly space where you can watch colourful sunsets and relax under the stars (something Fred also loved to do). Pitches aren’t set so you can make your camp anywhere; most of the field is flat for easy setting up. Once you’re sorted, you can borrow handmade pallet beds for stargazing, and there are outdoor activities and play equipment for all ages. Everybody, from walkers and backpackers to cyclists, couples, families and kids – and their dogs – is welcome on site. Duncliffe Woods are 15 minutes’ walk/five minutes’ drive for a good stretch of the paws, and there’s a dog park five minutes away by car too. The pitching field is surrounded by greenery that’s home to a deer family, barn owls and hares. The free-range chickens provide eggs that you can buy on site, and you can also purchase a fire-starting kit of kindling and logs for your campfires, although you’re welcome to bring your own wood too. There’s a pub half an hour away on foot; Shaftesbury (10 minutes’ drive) is a handy hub for cafés, pubs and supermarkets. Fred’s Field is also 40 minutes’ drive from Stonehenge and an hour to Lulworth Cove.

What customers say

This pop-up campground gets rave reviews for its peaceful vibe, gorgeous rural views, and amazing sunsets. Campers loved the clean, roomy washrooms and spotless dishwashing stations, plus thoughtful extras like a communal garden. Owners are super friendly and helpful. A few mentioned hard ground and smaller pitches when busy, but it's highly recommended for a serene, well-maintained getaway.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked All the utilities were super clean and tidy! Such a cute environment with the little veggie patch (which you can pick from for your dinner!) and the little fairy lights at night in the utilities and the free games to use for yourself, found it so lovely. The owner seems so sweet!

Liked Big skies, quiet space, lovely sunset. Great communication from the owners.

Disliked Short stubble areas could have been cut shorter for convenience. Okay for camper-vans.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked This pop up site was welcome for my daughter and I on our little campervan road trip. We were the only ones in the field so that felt a bit like wild camping, and I think other people have missed a trick here. There's clearly love gone into creating a cosy space around the garden, with bright colours and flowers and veg, right in-between two farm fields, like an oasis in the current drought, and the perfect spot to see a gorgeous sunset.
We also like that the toilet facilities are inclusive, and the games offered outside. Thanks for the little touches.

Disliked Only didn't like that the toilets were far away from the lovely garden where we preferred to be staying. Any chance a compost loo could be placed somewhere nearby there?

Liked Beautiful garden patch with lots of homemade elements and art in a peaceful location. The owners were very friendly and informative and we were allowed to use what was growing in the veg plot for our dinner! Amazing value for money and a walk away from a farm shop and a beautiful woodland walk. Highly recommend

Liked Everything really sweetly done. Get every info you need before hand. (no showers but you know before you book) Really nice Owners! Clean facilities and every thing done with heart!
We were the only ones so really quiet and peaceful except the road beside it (didn't bother us) but you can pitch further down if you want.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Although we only stayed one night we loved this campsite! Loved that the toilets were real ones and not portaloos, was really quiet considering it was on a road, very easy to find and the vegetable patch/herb garden was so lovely! The ground was very hard (definitely not their fault of course!) so bare this in mind if you're needing to put pegs in the ground. Thank you for a lovely time, we would definitely come back again!

Disliked The only issue we had (which was barely one as it was so quiet during our stay) was that the places to pitch weren't very big. There are two mowed out sections to pitch which does mean if there's lots of people there you're quite close to others. It wasn't an issue for us as there were only two other vans but perhaps something to bare in mind.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked I had an absolutely fantastic weekend staying at Fred’s farm campsite in Gillingham, near Dover! From the moment I arrived, I felt incredibly welcome. The farm is peaceful, beautifully maintained, and the perfect place to unwind and escape the hustle and bustle.
Waking up to the fresh countryside air and stunning views each morning was a real highlight. It was such a peaceful setting and the perfect place to relax and switch off.
One of the loveliest things was the beautiful little garden. The owner even messaged saying I to help myself to anything growing in the garden to use when cooking, which made my stay feel so personal and welcoming.
Exceptional place, good location—friendly, kind, and always happy to help people, while giving me plenty of space where I was cooking or sunbathing. You can really tell how much care and pride she puts into the campsite and ensuring guests have a memorable stay. I loved the sofa at the back of the field where I watched the sun go down which was amazing!
I left feeling refreshed and already looking forward to coming back. If you’re looking for a peaceful countryside campsite with a warm, genuine host in Gillingham, near Dover, good prices, clean and tidy facilities. Then Fred’s farm is the perfect choice for you. I couldn’t recommend it more highly—5 stars all the way! Thankyou ever so much for a lovely quiet weekend away.
