  • Quiet rural pop-up site 10 minutes’ drive from Gillingham in Dorset
  • Longleat safari park half an hour’s drive and Stonehenge 40 minutes
  • Local pub, farm shops and woodland walks within five minutes’ drive
Dorset bound and looking for somewhere peaceful to lay your head? About 10 minutes’ drive from Gillingham, Fred’s Field is a rural pop-up site named in memory of the owners’ dog Fred, who liked having a snooze in this field. It’s a welcoming and budget-friendly space where you can watch colourful sunsets and relax under the stars (something Fred also loved to do). Pitches aren’t set so you can make your camp anywhere; most of the field is flat for easy setting up. Once you’re sorted, you can borrow handmade pallet beds for stargazing, and there are outdoor activities and play equipment for all ages. Everybody, from walkers and backpackers to cyclists, couples, families and kids – and their dogs – is welcome on site. Duncliffe Woods are 15 minutes’ walk/five minutes’ drive for a good stretch of the paws, and there’s a dog park five minutes away by car too. The pitching field is surrounded by greenery that’s home to a deer family, barn owls and hares. The free-range chickens provide eggs that you can buy on site, and you can also purchase a fire-starting kit of kindling and logs for your campfires, although you’re welcome to bring your own wood too. There’s a pub half an hour away on foot; Shaftesbury (10 minutes’ drive) is a handy hub for cafés, pubs and supermarkets. Fred’s Field is also 40 minutes’ drive from Stonehenge and an hour to Lulworth Cove.

Unpowered grass campervan site

Liked I had an absolutely fantastic weekend staying at Fred’s farm campsite in Gillingham, near Dover! From the moment I arrived, I felt incredibly welcome. The farm is peaceful, beautifully maintained, and the perfect place to unwind and escape the hustle and bustle.
Waking up to the fresh countryside air and stunning views each morning was a real highlight. It was such a peaceful setting and the perfect place to relax and switch off.
One of the loveliest things was the beautiful little garden. The owner even messaged saying I to help myself to anything growing in the garden to use when cooking, which made my stay feel so personal and welcoming.
Exceptional place, good location—friendly, kind, and always happy to help people, while giving me plenty of space where I was cooking or sunbathing. You can really tell how much care and pride she puts into the campsite and ensuring guests have a memorable stay. I loved the sofa at the back of the field where I watched the sun go down which was amazing!
I left feeling refreshed and already looking forward to coming back. If you’re looking for a peaceful countryside campsite with a warm, genuine host in Gillingham, near Dover, good prices, clean and tidy facilities. Then Fred’s farm is the perfect choice for you. I couldn’t recommend it more highly—5 stars all the way! Thankyou ever so much for a lovely quiet weekend away.

Unpowered grass campervan site

Liked Wow! Loved this site - was everything we were looking for! A true ‘field popup campsite’. Communication beforehand was very helpful, very friendly without being over the top. It was a half an hour walk through fields to the Ship Inn in West Stour (although the bar doesn’t open til 6). There are no showers but this is made clear in the information but the toilets are very spacious and clean, the sinks for washing up etc were immaculate and the facilities were amazing for such a set up. Given we were in our third heatwave we were pleased we were in a van and not a tent as the ground was rock hard with huge cracks but Rachel had warned us about this beforehand. The sunset was incredible, our dog loved being able to sniff about and be off lead and the fact that there were only 3 groups camping meant we felt like we had the place pretty much to ourselves.
