Revels Fishery: Generous room on your chosen spot

General

  • Fishery-based site on the edge of the stunningly scenic Dorset Downs
  • Half an hour from the sandy beaches of the Jurassic Coast
  • Large tackle shop and plenty of onsite fishing waters to choose from

Hoping for a quiet and peaceful countryside retreat close to an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty? Revels Fishery – a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the Dorset village of Middlemarsh – will tick all your boxes.

Though the site’s also open to guests who aren’t interested in casting a line, it’s simply a dream for angling fans: there are seven fishing waters on site where perch, tench, barbel, carp, catfish, bream and chub are plentiful, and a large tackle shop is just an added lure.

The site’s also well-placed for rambling excursions through the Dorset Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the scenic Dorset countryside. There are loads of bridleways and footpaths to follow right from the site, and walking fuel is a cinch round here too: nab some fresh eggs from the resident chickens and ducks in the morning and boil them up for mid-hike energy boosts.

Not much of a hiker or biker? Head into Middlemarsh to clamber aboard the village’s bus service to Dorchester, Sherborne or (and?) Yeovil for historical sights, shopping and local eats, or just chill on site instead, soaking up the views of the fishing waters and Blackmore Vale.

The owner was more than welcoming, more or less let us pick our own spot, fairly level but there was leveling bricks if you needed them. My husband is a fisherman and he said the tackle shop was amazing there was everything. We stayed 4 nights and was the most relaxed we had been since the start of the petrol fiasco. We will be back if we are down this way again. Thank you for being so welcoming

We had a fantastic time! Nice simple campsite, without the frills. Really lovely staff, absolutely superb fishing lakes, with one exclusive to people staying at site. We spend a happy few hours catching all kinds of fish. The kids loved it!
Drinking water, waste disposal, showers all basic - but entirely functional and very clean + well looked after. Great value, for the price. Farm animals were around (although we didn't have time to investigate!) and the scenery was fantastic. Nice and quiet.
Would highly recommend, and we'd definitely stay again.

From the manager...

I am sorry you rated us so low without talking to us. Just read the following half a dozen reviews below all very chalk and cheese and the opposite of what was rated on. Yes our main business is the fishery and we do not pretend to be anything other then a step up from a basic ex-farm site. We do not have playgrounds and adventure activities you need to find the main commercialised sites and pay their rates for this. As we are in an area of outstanding natural beauty this would not fit in with our site anyway.

Friendly helpful staff, the site is conveniently placed for visiting the surrounding areas of interest, the fishing was superb, and the shop very well stocked with tackle and bait etc.

    Disliked:

The chemical disposal point was a bit primitive, but saying that it worked well enough, the toilets and showers were basic, but they were clean and presentable.

Well what can I say, we loved everything about this site, yes it’s basic but that’s what we expected & wanted, Welcomed by the friendly helpful chap in the shop, who told us all we needed to know about the fishing & the bits we needed to buy & didn’t feel ripped off one bit as we were novices at it! Husband & son had a lovely time catching a few fish in the top lake, then again the next day & as there’s no time limit to leave we didn’t have to rush packing up & had a lovely chilled Sunday by the lake before heading home, I was actually impressed with the toilet block for a field campsite, always clean & plenty of loo roll plus smelt nice which is a bonus ha!
As for the two dogs running around, they didn’t bother us once & we were parked up the top quite near them, didn’t hear them bark & definitely didn’t see any poop, they ran around a bit & kept to their owners area!
Having electric hook up was a great bonus too.
We just came for one night as we don’t live far but thought as we have the campervan & was going to the local cheese festival for the day we’d make a night of it by finding somewhere local to there & I can’t tell you how wonderful & chilled it was staying here, the night sky view was amazing & they let us have a little campfire which is a must for me, next year we will definitely be back for longer.

Local attractions

If standing on the shoulders of giants has always appealed, make immediate tracks for Cerne Abbas, a small village 10 minutes’ drive from the site. As well as pubs serving local beers, the village has access to a National Trust trail leading up to the Cerne Abbas (very anatomically correct) giant.

When 17th-century hill figures simply won’t satisfy history cravings, head instead for Minterne House and Gardens, five minutes from base. The house itself may be closed to casual visitors, but wandering the Capability Brown-style Himalayan gardens should more than make up for that – and the house itself is certainly pretty enough from the outside to warrant repeated gazes on strolls.

Plenty else by way of history is within easy reach – the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Hayes International Motor Museum and the Tank Museum are all within 35 minutes – but taking time to explore nearby towns is a must. Dorchester (15 minutes) is a particular treat, with roman remains, Terracotta warriors, a Tutankhamun exhibition and Thomas Hardy’s birthplace to visit, but the markets, castles and abbey of Sherborne (15 minutes), and the railway centre, toy museum and Montacute House in Yeovil (25 minutes), are also worthy of car trips.

Days on the sand might be all anyone needs on hols, though, so luckily it’s only 30 minutes to the famed Jurassic Coast and to seaside towns like Weymouth, where the lengthy Chesil beach, massive sand sculptures and harbour fort all await.

Must see

  • Hardy's Birthplace (8.8 miles)
  • Mapperton House & Gardens (11.4 miles)
  • Montacute House (13.1 miles)

National Trust

  • Hardy's Cottage (8.8 miles)
  • Max Gate (9.8 miles)
