Hoping for a quiet and peaceful countryside retreat close to an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty? Revels Fishery – a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the Dorset village of Middlemarsh – will tick all your boxes. Though the site’s also open to guests who aren’t interested in casting a line, it’s simply a dream for angling fans: there are seven fishing waters on site where perch, tench, barbel, carp, catfish, bream and chub are plentiful, and a large tackle shop is just an added lure. The site’s also well-placed for rambling excursions through the Dorset Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the scenic Dorset countryside. There are loads of bridleways and footpaths to follow right from the site, and walking fuel is a cinch round here too: nab some fresh eggs from the resident chickens and ducks in the morning and boil them up for mid-hike energy boosts. Not much of a hiker or biker? Head into Middlemarsh to clamber aboard the village’s bus service to Dorchester, Sherborne or (and?) Yeovil for historical sights, shopping and local eats, or just chill on site instead, soaking up the views of the fishing waters and Blackmore Vale.

Non mi è piaciuto I wish the fishing swims were all level and the steps as well as the steps you can’t see them for people to see apart from that good shame the WiFi doesn’t work

Dal gestore: As you stated we have had the best fishing sport here the last 2 months we have had in years. The various ponds are built into the natural valley and so there are many different types of swims and majority (Middle, Dead Tree, Trendels and Canal are all level but a few other waters do have steps to access but that is the geography of how the warers have been built and unavoidable. As for the the WiFi which is the only point that is really directly linked to the booking itself as fishing is a separate entity anyway our card machine in the shop works from the same Wifi and it was working fine during your stay but you do need a password to access the wifi that is readily available from the shop and if asked we would have offered help with this. Otherwise i would say a low rating not based on anything to do with the booking itself.

This was our second stay here…

Mi è piaciuto This was our second stay here and it’s perfect. Great views and the campsite is super quiet. Family friendly and facilities whilst basic are clean. Owners are lovely too. It won’t be our last visit for sure.

Mi è piaciuto Our 3rd visit to Revels. Always a lovely, relaxing stay. Husband loves the fishing! Very helpful owners - our car battery died, they sorted it with their jump leads. Highly recommend.

Mi è piaciuto The location was lovely and the people running it very friendly.

Non mi è piaciuto Sadly some of the other campers did not stick to the 10 o’clock quiet rule. Not the fault of the owners of course. A lot of the pitches were also very exposed which was uncomfortable in the heat.

Dal gestore: Nothing was reported to us while you were here and the first i have heard of any issues is with this feedback. It does say in your welcome leaflet as well as stated verbally to EVERYONE on arrival "Any issue or problem speak to us." Even out of hours contact possibility given and we were not made aware of any noise issue during your stay or any other reports from others otherwise would have been dealt with. As for pitches there is clearly an aerial view and lots of photos on the booking site showing the camping field but afraid to say as we have just hit all time EVER record for June heat and i do not have thermostat controls for the sun and that is totally beyond any ones control. So overall an unfair review thats been rated on points we have not had any opportunity to address or able to address

If standing on the shoulders of giants has always appealed, make immediate tracks for Cerne Abbas, a small village 10 minutes’ drive from the site. As well as pubs serving local beers, the village has access to a National Trust trail leading up to the Cerne Abbas (very anatomically correct) giant. When 17th-century hill figures simply won’t satisfy history cravings, head instead for Minterne House and Gardens, five minutes from base. The house itself may be closed to casual visitors, but wandering the Capability Brown-style Himalayan gardens should more than make up for that – and the house itself is certainly pretty enough from the outside to warrant repeated gazes on strolls. Plenty else by way of history is within easy reach – the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Hayes International Motor Museum and the Tank Museum are all within 35 minutes – but taking time to explore nearby towns is a must. Dorchester (15 minutes) is a particular treat, with roman remains, Terracotta warriors, a Tutankhamun exhibition and Thomas Hardy’s birthplace to visit, but the markets, castles and abbey of Sherborne (15 minutes), and the railway centre, toy museum and Montacute House in Yeovil (25 minutes), are also worthy of car trips. Days on the sand might be all anyone needs on hols, though, so luckily it’s only 30 minutes to the famed Jurassic Coast and to seaside towns like Weymouth, where the lengthy Chesil beach, massive sand sculptures and harbour fort all await.
