Newlands Holiday Park: View from pitches

General

  • Family-friendly park just outside Charmouth on the Jurassic Coast
  • Pools, bar, restaurant, play areas and indoor play
  • Modern amenities including hot showers, launderette and food shop

There’s nothing fossilised about a stay at Newlands Holiday Park a stone’s throw away from the Jurassic Coast on the Devon/Dorset border, where the staff and facilities will crater to your every holiday need.

For example, this lush place has two separate play areas for the mini dinos; an in-house chef dishing up the best of local food at the restaurant; an indoor heated pool – and an outdoor one with loungers so you can bask in the sun and wonder where the kids get all that energy…

More? There’s a lounge and bar, the conservatory with picturesque patio for having a glass of wine and drinking in the uninterrupted Dorset views, the indoor soft play area… Use family-run Newlands as a base for a Lyme Regis fossil hunting holiday or just lounge about on site; either way, epic times are on the cards.

The 23-acre landscaped park has all the facilities you’d expect from a thoroughly modern site: food shop, internet access and clean up to date amenities including hot showers and a launderette. Half a mile from Newlands, the World Heritage village of Charmouth has shops, restaurants and pubs… and is also known for its hardy souls taking to the sea in fancy dress on Christmas Day.

Shower facilities were good, well kept and clean. Clubhouse and pool were fantastic. Well kept pitches. Lovely park and arcade for younger children. Shop was very reasonable with freshly baked baguettes and croissants and stocked with fresh bread from the local bakery. Within walking distance to Charmouth beach.

    Disliked:

Our pitch was slanted so we had to adapt to living wonky for the week. WiFi didn't work but that's not such a bad thing, kept the kids off their phones.

Being really picky now but would be nice if pitches were spaced bit further apart and nothing to do with campsite….more than 3 places to eat in charmouth would be nice, still plenty of places near by.

Liked the location, clean holiday park, plenty of facilities (Spar shop onsite) We was able to walk 10-15 minutes down the road and found a place to get hot food for less than £30 in total. The beach is in walking distance, a camping shop is down the road if you need to buy last minute items (needed a airbed).

    Disliked:

Price of restaurant and cost of swimming pool. I went with my 3 boys (the Mrs stayed at home) after setting up camp we went for a wonder with the kids and decided to buy us all a pint of coke and ended up paying £14 for a round of coke. Food was expensive (menu can be found online) didn't use the restaurant because as expected the wait for food would be long in the evening which was confirmed by talking to other guests whilst I was there. Second dislike was £3.50 to access the swimming pool per session so would need to pay in the morning then in the afternoon if we came back we had to pay again and as I was paying for myself and 3 boys, it's £14 for a session. Your told you get a hour but was able to stay in longer because the outside wasn't that busy so this is a bonus. I would prefer the option to pay a one off payment to cover us for the week and unlimited access rather than paying each time we go in.

From the manager...

Hi Chris, thank you for your review.
We are glad you enjoyed the location of our park, our facilities and the cleanliness of everything here at Newlands. Apologies about your experience here at the Tow Bar however, all our prices are in line with other pubs and eateries in the area and are therefore fair for the consistency and quality.
Our swimming pool does have a charge, yes, but we hope that all of our guests understand that both pools do incur a very large cost and therefore that does get passed onto the customer in a pay-by-time charge rather than included in the camping/accommodation cost. As you say - we are a bit more flexible on the outdoor pool which we hope gives more flexibility to our guests in turn. We hope to welcome you back soon, Best Wishes, Newlands

Clean site, Bathrooms are ok but can do with an additional clean during the day or paper towels for people to clean up the counters. The Pools was great and the Restaurant was nice but doesn't cater for fussy children. The kids loved the play area. The beach is only a 20min walk away.

    Disliked:

Out pitch was a bit down hill, this made sleeping a bit difficult. I would have liked to be made aware of the swimming pass when we checked in at reception as this would have saved me some money. All the games and vending machine requires cash and there is no cashpoint on site and the resturant and shop will not do a cash back.

From the manager...

Hi Amanda, thank you for your review. We are glad you enjoyed the site and locality, there sure is lots to do here! The toilets are cleaned twice daily, but if any guest notices anything thats not up to our usual standards they are welcome to pop into reception and we will rectify the situation as soon as possible. Swimming passes are not available to purchase, swimming is all paid as you go unless you are staying in a lodge or you booked during the offer period over the winter. We look forward to welcoming you back soon, Best Wishes, Newlands

Hello,
Thank you for your review. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay and would stay with us again. Unfortunately, we do have a strict no gazebo policy due to safety reasons and the gazebos being a fire risk. We do hope to welcome you back to Newlands soon.

Local attractions

Charmouth is the gateway to the Jurassic Coast and has some of the best fossils to be found in Dorset: the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre has fossil collections, guided fossil walks and is where you can proudly bring in your very own fossil find to be identified.

The beach is a 15-minute walk from Newlands: stroll from here to Lyme Regis keeping your head down for more fossily finds, then wander around Lyme to take a look at Cobb Harbour (made famous in Jane Austen’s Persuasion); buy freshly ground flour at the 14th-century watermill; amble along to at the ammonites, exhibitions and events at the museum, or swing off on the cliff at Lyme Regis Golf Club.

Mini fossil hunters will be monster fans of the award-winning Dinosaur Museum at Dorchester, and taking a detour while in town to the Teddy Bear Museum. If they’re watery types, they’ll have a whale of a time at the Splashdown Water Park in Poole and the walk-through underwater tunnel at the Bournemouth Oceanarium.

Closer to Newlands and Dino Dan, families can see zebras and meerkats at the Axe Valley Wildlife Park, trundle along on the Seaton Tramway for a scenic trip through the estuary of the River Axe, or feed a shoal of mullet (not the haircut) at Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium.
