  • Adults-only touring site a five-minute drive from the Jurassic Coast
  • Bridport five minutes’ drive; Lyme Regis 20 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; shop selling local cheeses and meats; newspaper delivery
A year-round adults-only site in the shade of distinctive Colmers Hill, Ernie’s Plot is easily reached from the A35. Not that you would know that a major road passes anywhere near: the site is surrounded by Dorset’s splendidly rural landscape, with hedgerows and leafy trees, inquisitive sheep in the nearby field and the occasional cameo by the local wildlife, mainly foxes and deer. Sitting halfway between Bridport and Chideock (five minutes’ drive to either), the site is also a five-minute drive from the spectacular Jurassic Coast, fringed by the South West Coast Path (cue epic walks with your four-legged companion) and dotted with pretty beaches – from pebbly Eype (which also happens to be dog-friendly), to Seatown, where you might bump into a fossil hunter or two. The touring pitches here are the Cadillacs of touring pitches: hardstanding, double-width and with water supply. Electric hook-up is coin-operated, so be sure to raid the piggy bank before your holiday, and come armed with plenty of £1 & £2 coins. And 50-pence coins, too – they will come in handy for the hot shower in the impeccably maintained toilet block. How’s this for luxury? One of the two cubicles comes with underfloor heating – bliss. Another elegant touch is the daily newspaper delivery (on request). Check out the information shed/shop, where you can get the timetable for the bus and brochures on nearby attractions, as well as essential items such as free-range eggs from the resident chooks, cheese and milk, and local meats.

What customers say

This adult-only site offers well-maintained, clean facilities and spacious, level pitches with lovely countryside views and direct access to walks. Owners are frequently described as friendly and welcoming, with many guests appreciating thoughtful touches like complimentary cake and cream. While some guests noted traffic noise from the nearby A35, many found it unobtrusive or a minor issue, and the location is praised for its convenience to Bridport and the coast. Some minor points were raised regarding shower room warmth and the lack of a dedicated washing-up sink.

Liked Nice place, the site was clean, and it was just like an unexpected snippet of land snuck away.

The toilets and showers were very clean and nice. Water and electricity right there where you were parked up, £4 in the electric meter lasted 2 days with main electric use being the fridge.

Lovely countryside view, including various kept animals on the other side of the fence which were not particularly noisy and good to see.

Our neighbour told us about the nearby pub with an open fire, very tempting, although we didn't get there this time.

Disliked Units were allocated on arrival, what we didn't realise was upon arrival allocation notice was on a blackboard near the site entrance that we easily didn't notice as we drove by it to find a unit to park in. It was only when we walked back that we saw the blackboard, and by then as chance would have it the unit we had parked in the man in the next door unit who had rented both it and the one he was using was happy to have us parked there as he wasn't using it anyway, and we ended up with the unit we were hoping for in the first place. We suggest figuring out a more noticeable way of informing people which unit is allocated to them, or that there is a blackboard to look out for upon entering at least, not everyone will be as lucky as us.

The big duel carriageway main road not that far away which can be heard but wasn't overly noisy. But beware that road has no pavement, just lumpy grass, if you want to walk along it to get to a beach, and that makes it quite the close proximity to vehicles speeding past.

Liked Lovely site and looking at the animals through the windows was very relaxing. Nikki was very helpful and friendly and the two dogs fern and willow are the cutest.

Disliked The shower rooms a little on the chilly side. It is possible to hear the road and I’m sure in the summer with the windows open it may annoy some people. We didn’t find it intrusive but it was December with everything shut.

Liked Lovely site. The owners were great , we had a puncture when we arrived and they couldn't do enough for us, even took the wheel to the garage to get it fixed.

Disliked Not a dislike really, but the water wasn't hot enough to wash up in.

Local attractions

In Lyme Regis (20 minutes’ drive), be sure to find the Mary Anning Rocks statue, honouring the town’s most renowned fossil hunter (and her dog Tray), then walk along the beach all the way to the stone jetty known as The Cobb, from where you can admire a cracking sunset. Maumbury Rings Roman Amphitheatre, in Dorchester (half an hour), started life as a Neolithic henge, before morphing into an amphitheatre in Roman times and an artillery fort in the 17th century. On the outskirts of town, Maiden Castle is an elaborate Iron Age hill fort, while bookworms might be drawn to National Trust - Hardy’s Cottage, where the author wrote some of his early works. Chesil Beach (35 minutes) is an 18-mile long expanse of shingle sheltering the Fleet Lagoon, an area of salt marshes that’s home to an assortment of migrant birds. At its north-western end is the Abbotsbury Swannery, with daily feedings of the swan colony and a swan-shaped maze.
