  • Friendly and traditional farm site with fantastic views over Exmoor
  • A 15-minute drive from Tiverton and half an hour from Exmoor
  • Small shop selling farm produce including free-range milk and meat
‘Traditional and uncommercial’ is how the owners of West Middlewick Farm describe their home, making it a champion choice for a chilled break in mid-Devon countryside. It’s also rather a pretty place to have a hol. On arrival, eye up the excellent views out over Exmoor National Park from the main site, a four-acre field circled by farm walks, then amble over to the carp fishing lake to angle for the afternoon. It’s not just about peaceful pursuits hereabouts, though – the Gibson family who own the site say there’s plenty to do, spanning from theatre and film to history and heritage, in the nearby area. Tiverton (15 minutes’ drive) is home to a castle and edges a canal, while Exmoor (half an hour) has walking trails, a cracking coastline and historic villages to explore. Back at the park, a small shop sells the farm’s produce – including raw milk and free-range meat – and stocks other locally sourced ingredients such as butter, cheese, ice cream, fresh fruit and vegetables, jams, chutney and Devon fudge too. Fancy picking up a souvenir? Homemade soap and sheepskin are top trinkets to take away. And as for food? Spread out on your spacious, level pitch for a picnic or pull up a pew at one of the nearby and order a freshly cooked meal.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Lovely small campsite set on a farm in beautiful rolling Devon hills, lovely and relaxing and just what was needed. On site is a fab farm shop selling local produce, everything you would need for your stay and more. Iddy widdy calves which can be petted and the goats roam around the pitches to keep the grass low (have to admit I was worried about having an impromptu goat BBQ if they chewed the electric cable but they didn't:))... I have to put in a call out on the raw milk which is absolutely incredible and the owner (sorry didnt catch your name) was able to give me lots of information on it, how it's produced and safety guidelines and short of knowing the cow's name I left knowing I was holding really fresh milk... and the taste is wonderful.. forget pasteurised on your cornflakes this is so much better!

Camping pod

Liked: We had a great weekend for my son's 9th birthday treat.
We loved all the animals and the staff were so friendly and welcoming. We stayed in a glamping pod and it was perfect for our short stay.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Warm friendly welcome from the owners. Shown where the pitches were and allowed to pick our own. The site is lovely and quite with plenty if space for children to play. Lovely views over the countryside. Visiting the calfs and pigs. There is a lovely farm shop on site with fresh milk and produce. Toilets are clean didn't use the showers so cannot comment. Excellent pub 20mins walk down the road.

Disliked: Nothing

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Atmosphere of a working farm, the fact that there was plenty of space, hook-up facilities etc. The Farm Shop on site was a great plus point. Friendly helpful (mature) farming couple run the site. Possibly the best bit was being able to see this year's calves in their stall.

Disliked: Nothing of any consequence. I guess there could be queues for showers when it's busy, but as we always avoid busy seasons, this didn't affect us.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Lovely place to stay. It was lovely and quiet after all the school
Hols and summer. Gorgeous farm
Shop and tea room area in the old milking parlour. They’ve done a lovely job of it. Friendly team and family where nothing is too much trouble. Would totally recommend!

Disliked: Could do with a shower facility near top
Field.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Loved every bit of this farm/campsite! Ended up booking at the very last minute after umming and ahhing about where to go, and were amazed the second we arrived. Greeted by someone we believe to be a member of staff for the farm who promptly found the owner for us. Although we had booked so late in the day, they could not do enough to help out and accommodate. There was a slight issue that the last electric hook up pitch had recently been found to have a wasp nest (this is nature, things like this are going to happen and in no way the proprietors fault) however our leads were more than long enough to pitch away from the nest and the owner even had his brother-in-law move his car for us to be far enough away! Really really thoughtful.
Sadly, our 2yo became very poorly during the first night so regrettably there was a lot of crying coming from our tent in the early hours. We apologised as much as we could because of the noise, yet everyone seemed more concerned our little one was doing okay. Genuinely meant a great deal that everyone cared, and such a relief that there are still humble and wonderful people out there.
The site is amazing. Fully working farm with a beautiful farm shop, play area for children and of course, plenty of animals to see! West middlewick farm is the absolute ideal camping spot for those that do truly want to get the outdoor experience and have those luxuries of a toilet, shower and electric. Absolutely will be returning and making this our go-to destination. Thank you everyone at West Middlewick Farm

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Amazing campsite. There is a little lake where you can fish on. Lots of animals from cows to rabbit and even cats that roam around, bingo was our favourite. The owner and his family are very nice and helpful. Farm shop had lots of options. Our kids loved the park and being able to touch and interact with the animals.

Disliked: Can't say I had much to dislike. Maybe a brush to sweep out the showers after use as there was some grass but every morning they was clean.

Local attractions

Clip-clop around the countryside from The Rose & Crown in Calverleigh, which organises horse riding lessons (15 minutes’ drive), or take to Tiverton (around the same distance) to poke around the town’s castle and meander by its canal. Another place to peer at is Knightshayes Court, a turreted house and garden with a tearoom (25 minutes), while Bickleigh Mill – dating back to the 18th century and with a pottery studio for clay-based classes – is also worth a gander. If you’ll be keeping adventures alfresco, set off on the scenic Tarka Line rail journey, starting in Exeter (40 minutes) and finishing in Barnstaple. Or for more lovely landscapes, loop around Exmoor National Park (half an hour), perhaps up to the lush coastal villages of Lynmouth and Lynton and through the vast Valley of the Rocks (an hour). If sandy sunbathing sessions are more your bag, turn in the opposite direction towards Exmouth beach on the south Devon coast (also an hour), stopping by estuary villages like Topsham enroute for a pint at a pub with a watery view.
