West Middlewick Farm: Spacious, friendly campsite

General

  • Friendly and traditional farm site with fantastic views over Exmoor
  • A 15-minute drive from Tiverton and half an hour from Exmoor
  • Small shop selling farm produce including free-range milk and meat

‘Traditional and uncommercial’ is how the owners of West Middlewick Farm describe their home, making it a champion choice for a chilled break in mid-Devon countryside.

It’s also rather a pretty place to have a hol. On arrival, eye up the excellent views out over Exmoor National Park from the main site, a four-acre field circled by farm walks, then amble over to the carp fishing lake to angle for the afternoon.

It’s not just about peaceful pursuits hereabouts, though – the Gibson family who own the site say there’s plenty to do, spanning from theatre and film to history and heritage, in the nearby area. Tiverton (15 minutes’ drive) is home to a castle and edges a canal, while Exmoor (half an hour) has walking trails, a cracking coastline and historic villages to explore.

Back at the park, a small shop sells the farm’s produce – including raw milk and free-range meat – and stocks other locally sourced ingredients such as butter, cheese, ice cream, fresh fruit and vegetables, jams, chutney and Devon fudge too. Fancy picking up a souvenir? Homemade soap and sheepskin are top trinkets to take away.

And as for food? Spread out on your spacious, level pitch for a picnic or pull up a pew at one of the nearby and order a freshly cooked meal.

Please note

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

The park caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

The grocery shop is open between 02/01 et 24/12.

Group bookings of 3 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

A cable measuring at least 12 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

A charge of £0,20 (R4,24) applies for the use of the shower.

The washing-up area is not in operation due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the park are unlit.

Reception is unmanned after 6 p.m.. Please inform the park while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time so that the team can provide information about your unit/site.

Excellent Farm Site with an Amazing Family09/13/2021

what an amazing place. the farm is a wonderful place to holiday, we only wish we could stay forever. the gibson family of John,Dan,Jo,Cath and Abi do an amazing job running this magical farm alongside hosting us holidaymakers. we were made to feel welcome straight away even though we turned up during evening milking time. John the farmer had a wealth of knowledge and history which he was not afraid to relay to us townfolk. we really learned alot. Dan was running around like a headless chicken with all the various jobs he had but still had time to chat. Jo was everywhere and always on hand to help with any queries. The girls (abi & Cath) only work part time as they have other commitments although you would not realise it as they always seemed to be there. overall what a great loving family.

our holiday was exactly what we wanted. peaceful and interesting. peaceful for the countryside and no road noise. intresting due to the animals, walks, history and learning.

the pitches were very spacious with either a choice of grass or hardstanding in a choice of fields (main and marys field). we stayed in marys field which was a bit quieter and wow what a view over the exmoor downs we had. plenty of electric hookups and water points to suit even the most busy times. pitches drained well so no boggy pitches. plenty of space for campers and tourers at the same time. two gread pods for glaming on site with great views also along with log cabins for hire.

2 toilet blocks in the complex either end of the farm all with disabled access. all spotlessly clean which was very unusual as i expected to see spiders and bugs being that i was staying on a farm.

showers very spacious at top of farm. manual controls to control temprature which was great. showers operate on 20p per minute so make sure you have some change however this is avaliable in the farm shop.

washing up areas in both locations immaculate with plenty of space for multiple users at once.

waste disposal (Elsan) perfect design with running water avaliable for wash outs. make sure you dont put your lid close to the edge as lots of people have lost thier lid down the waste chute. always clean even for a waste area.

wifi avaliable all throughout the site however i did not use as i had a great mobile signal. great feature however.

farm shop was really well stocked with locally sourced produce and sold the farms own produced milk. what a treat. really busy throught the day with people coming from miles to get supplies.

useful notice board near the shop showing local interests alongside an info hut on the first camping field. the most useful resource was however the people who would happily give directions or an recomendation or a tip.

we got to meet up close an personal many farm animals in their own enviornment which was a real treat learning about how the circle of life runs. from cows, sheep, pigs to goats and even bella the donkey, something there for everyone.

we loved this place and cant put into words our appreciation to the gibson family for making our holiday so special. it goes without saying that we will be back. but next time we will be bringing more people to help spread the word.

    thankyou from Gary & Sandy

Local attractions

Clip-clop around the countryside from The Rose & Crown in Calverleigh, which organises horse riding lessons (15 minutes’ drive), or take to Tiverton (around the same distance) to poke around the town’s castle and meander by its canal.

Another place to peer at is Knightshayes Court, a turreted house and garden with a tearoom (25 minutes), while Bickleigh Mill – dating back to the 18th century and with a pottery studio for clay-based classes – is also worth a gander.

If you’ll be keeping adventures alfresco, set off on the scenic Tarka Line rail journey, starting in Exeter (40 minutes) and finishing in Barnstaple. Or for more lovely landscapes, loop around Exmoor National Park (half an hour), perhaps up to the lush coastal villages of Lynmouth and Lynton and through the vast Valley of the Rocks (an hour).

If sandy sunbathing sessions are more your bag, turn in the opposite direction towards Exmouth beach on the south Devon coast (also an hour), stopping by estuary villages like Topsham enroute for a pint at a pub with a watery view.
