  • Friendly and traditional farm site with fantastic views over Exmoor
  • A 15-minute drive from Tiverton and half an hour from Exmoor
  • Small shop selling farm produce including free-range milk and meat
‘Traditional and uncommercial’ is how the owners of West Middlewick Farm describe their home, making it a champion choice for a chilled break in mid-Devon countryside. It’s also rather a pretty place to have a hol. On arrival, eye up the excellent views out over Exmoor National Park from the main site, a four-acre field circled by farm walks, then amble over to the carp fishing lake to angle for the afternoon. It’s not just about peaceful pursuits hereabouts, though – the Gibson family who own the site say there’s plenty to do, spanning from theatre and film to history and heritage, in the nearby area. Tiverton (15 minutes’ drive) is home to a castle and edges a canal, while Exmoor (half an hour) has walking trails, a cracking coastline and historic villages to explore. Back at the park, a small shop sells the farm’s produce – including raw milk and free-range meat – and stocks other locally sourced ingredients such as butter, cheese, ice cream, fresh fruit and vegetables, jams, chutney and Devon fudge too. Fancy picking up a souvenir? Homemade soap and sheepskin are top trinkets to take away. And as for food? Spread out on your spacious, level pitch for a picnic or pull up a pew at one of the nearby and order a freshly cooked meal.

Camping pod

Liked Loved revisiting the farm for the night, i used to come every summer as a kid and it was just as picturesque as I remembered. We stayed in the glamping pod, it came with everything you need but you do need to bring your own bed stuff (pillows and blanket) we had a socket for charging devices as well as a tv. The view was stunning over the valley and the sunset was stunning. There is also a covered seating area outside which was perfect to sit and have a bite to eat and play a few games. Loved every minute and will 100% be back. John and Jo are the perfect hosts.

Power optional grass site

Liked Really nice quiet campsite. It was so hot but I managed to get a really shady pitch under a tree. Everything I needed was on site. I left a night early to avoid travelling with dogs the next day when it was due to be really hot. Was able to meet my family for lunch in the cafe. Despite the cook not being there they went out of their way to get us some lunch.

Disliked The 20p showers were great, powerful and hot but I rarely have cash on me and trying to scrape together 20ps to have a shower was a little annoying after a hot day I'd rather of paid extra but this was just a minor inconvenience and didn't stop me enjoying my stay.

Overall a lovely place to stay.

Liked Just came back from a short trip in Devon with an overnight stay in the Rover Hut at the farm. Very welcoming and attentive owners. Beautiful location. Very well kept campsite and you have to try the tasty cakes in the farm cafe. Hope to come again.

Power optional concrete and grass site

Liked Very friendly welcome.
Lovely farm shop and amazing new cafe above the shop.
Super views from Mary’s field.

Disliked Coin showers made the whole process very stressful because you’re trying to beat the clock! Would rather pay a little extra and not have coin showers personally.

Power optional concrete and grass site

Liked It was a lovely basic farm site but had a farm open day the day after we arrived, which was fantastic.

Disliked Shower facilities a little basic but clean and tidy. We like sites where they build in the cost of the shower facilities to the overall cost of the stay.

👍 Summary: Would go again!

Camping pod

Liked 🌟 Liked

We had a really great stay at this campsite! It was very affordable, which made it easy to book last minute, and it was lovely and quiet throughout our visit. The campsite was clean, with beautiful scenery all around, and it was very easy to get to. As advertised, we had full access to the farm, which was a nice touch, and some of the farm and shop staff were really friendly and helpful.

We loved the cooking facilities right next to our pod – the convenience of having a water tap and electricity point nearby was a big plus. The camping pod itself was really well insulated, so we didn’t even need to use the heating! The kids enjoyed playing in the hammocks, and the farm shop was a great bonus with lots of fresh produce. There was also plenty of parking, clean toilets, and the campsite allowed us to arrive late and didn’t rush us out in the morning, which made the whole experience feel really relaxed.

Disliked 👎 Disliked

There were just a few small issues that could be improved. The biggest one was that there was no hot water in the toilet block or for dishwashing, which made cleaning pans after a fried breakfast pretty much impossible 😂. We also found that a couple of the farm staff just completely blanked us when we said good morning, which was a bit awkward.

Finally, when we arrived, there was a small white tablet left on the side in our pod – could have been absolutely anything. Thankfully, we spotted it before our child did, but it did give us a bit of a scare.

Local attractions

Clip-clop around the countryside from The Rose & Crown in Calverleigh, which organises horse riding lessons (15 minutes’ drive), or take to Tiverton (around the same distance) to poke around the town’s castle and meander by its canal. Another place to peer at is Knightshayes Court, a turreted house and garden with a tearoom (25 minutes), while Bickleigh Mill – dating back to the 18th century and with a pottery studio for clay-based classes – is also worth a gander. If you’ll be keeping adventures alfresco, set off on the scenic Tarka Line rail journey, starting in Exeter (40 minutes) and finishing in Barnstaple. Or for more lovely landscapes, loop around Exmoor National Park (half an hour), perhaps up to the lush coastal villages of Lynmouth and Lynton and through the vast Valley of the Rocks (an hour). If sandy sunbathing sessions are more your bag, turn in the opposite direction towards Exmouth beach on the south Devon coast (also an hour), stopping by estuary villages like Topsham enroute for a pint at a pub with a watery view.
