Tame your wild side with a good night’s kip at the hush and hidden-away Ashbourne Woods, where your inner Bear Grylls can be unleashed until your heart’s content (or at least until it’s time to go home). Wild camping but with all the amenities any 21st-century camper will happily accept, Ashbourne Woods is a popular pick for Pitchuppers.

Back-to-basics campers be warned - you may need to be pegged down after expelling all your excitement at the prospect of staying at this wild wonder. As if 68 acres of woodland wasn’t enough, you can choose a proper ‘wild’ camping pitch option where you can leave the car behind (well, at the safety of the main site as wild camping pitches can only be reached on foot, no vehicles allowed), trek through the forest and enjoy your own secluded, electricity-free camping experience, topped off with the chance to build your own campfire (you can buy firewood from the site). For those looking for a social rather than solitary getaway, the main camping area has a shared fridge for essentials and a communal fire to get those marshmallows toasting on together. No need for lines to stay between here: this rural site fits around its the growing and changing forest, so you can pick your own pitch to camp on within the areas set out by the helpful and friendly owners.

For those who don’t wish to go totally au naturale, you needn’t let the dirt get you down by using the washing machine and tumble dryer on site (you’ll need £1 coins for these), and the facilities which include showers, loos and a washing-up area, all with hot running water.

Ashbourne Woods has a spacious bell tent, camping pod with electricity and even a two-bedroom static caravan for those of a more mild than wild disposition. Pups are barking up the right tree at Ashbourne Woods too - they’re welcome across the site and accommodation types, and the two and a half miles of dog-walking tracks nearby really make a stay for pooches here anything but ruff.
