  • Well-maintained wild camping field on a golf course in rural Devon
  • A 10-minute drive from the Jurassic Coast, Branscombe and Sidmouth
  • Golf and snacks on site; beaches, coastal hikes, pubs and shops nearby
Thorn Campsite is a secluded spot in Devon countryside, near Jurassic Coast beaches and seaside resorts – and here’s the thing – it comes with its very own golf course. Yes, golfers pack your clubs and come to enjoy a few rounds on a nine-hole rural course. The flat and neatly manicured camping field has electric hook-ups, loos, a washing-up area and showers, and it’s just a short stroll from the golf course. The clubhouse cleverly doubles as a snack bar with additional loos and showers for site guests, and there’s a wifi connection if you need to keep friends informed of your golfing successes. But it’s not just about the golfing. Families, couples and dogs are also welcome at Thorn, as there’s plenty hereabouts to keep everyone entertained. Take the kids rummaging for fossils along the Jurassic Coast (10 minutes’ drive), and if they have behaved really, really well, the best treat ever is feeding time at The Donkey Sanctuary (five minutes). You can choose from an abundance of lovely beaches along the coastline (Salcombe Regis and Seaton to name just two – both less than 15 minutes’ drive), and the South West Coast Path (10 minutes) reveals swathes of rugged headlands for long-distance hikers. Sidmouth supermarkets will keep you fed and watered, and if you want a night off from cooking, there are traditional pubs in Branscombe (10 minutes) and a whole host of restaurants in Budleigh Salterton (25 minutes).

What customers say

This spacious, relaxed campsite on a golf course is praised for its friendly owner, ample space, and peaceful atmosphere. Guests enjoyed the convenient location near Sidmouth and the donkey sanctuary, along with affordable golf facilities. While some noted the distance and basic nature of toilets and showers, including occasional issues with hot water and cleanliness, manager replies indicate problems have been addressed. The site is considered great value, particularly for those seeking a no-frills, quiet getaway.

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked Super friendly and helpful owner. I fell off my bike and badly hurt my ankle in Sidmouth - he kindly offered to pick me and my bike up from the bottom of the very steep hill up to the campsite, a lifesaver.

Nice camping grounds, felt like a luxury to be pitching our tents on a putting green!

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked Had a lovely stay here for the Jazz and Blues festival. A really peaceful campsite. We walked into Sidmouth both days, but got taxis back, as was a bit hilly for the little ones. Would definitely stay again, great value for money.

Electric optional grass motorhome pitch

Liked lovely grounds, the owners were lovely, we arrived at 2300 hours and they waiting for us to direct us to our pitch, the camping area is fairly small, but we wasn't on top of each other even though it was fully booked.

the main shower and toilet block was a little walk from where we were, but showers are warm, with adequate pressure.

we spend most of our time in lyme regis, which was about 20 minutes away one decent A road so was easy to get too, (never been there before but loved it! check out the mill and the micro brewery!!)

would go again if we are wanting to go to the same area again, which we likely will be!

Disliked this is knit picking but nothing major, there was a lot of crass in the main shower block, but they just cut the grass so expected. told you it would be knit picking!,

Electric optional grass motorhome pitch

Liked Loved the location, friendliness and helpfulness of the owners. Really liked the golf element (and we aren’t golfers). Loved the view from our van and the quietness of our area. Absolutely loved hearing the donkeys and the owls of an evening.

Disliked The toilets/showers whilst clean just need a bit of an update/refurb.
