Thorn Campsite: Nine-hole golf course on site

General

  • Well-maintained wild camping field on a golf course in rural Devon
  • A 10-minute drive from the Jurassic Coast, Branscombe and Sidmouth
  • Golf and snacks on site; beaches, coastal hikes, pubs and shops nearby

Thorn Campsite is a secluded spot in Devon countryside, near Jurassic Coast beaches and seaside resorts – and here’s the thing – it comes with its very own golf course. Yes, golfers pack your clubs and come to enjoy a few rounds on a nine-hole rural course.

The flat and neatly manicured camping field has electric hook-ups, loos, a washing-up area and showers, and it’s just a short stroll from the golf course. The clubhouse cleverly doubles as a snack bar with additional loos and showers for site guests, and there’s a wifi connection if you need to keep friends informed of your golfing successes.

But it’s not just about the golfing. Families, couples and dogs are also welcome at Thorn, as there’s plenty hereabouts to keep everyone entertained. Take the kids rummaging for fossils along the Jurassic Coast (10 minutes’ drive), and if they have behaved really, really well, the best treat ever is feeding time at The Donkey Sanctuary (five minutes).

You can choose from an abundance of lovely beaches along the coastline (Salcombe Regis and Seaton to name just two – both less than 15 minutes’ drive), and the South West Coast Path (10 minutes) reveals swathes of rugged headlands for long-distance hikers.

Sidmouth supermarkets will keep you fed and watered, and if you want a night off from cooking, there are traditional pubs in Branscombe (10 minutes) and a whole host of restaurants in Budleigh Salterton (25 minutes).

Please note

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

    >Malcolm was very relaxed and friendly which gave a real holiday vibe, he is always somewhere on site doing something.
    >The golf course right outside our tent was good entertainment and well maintained for a campsite golf course (very cheap to play also-Club hire included)
    >Driving range set up ready for use, with targets to aim at such as old car, trampoline and other targets. Very rustic!
    >Beautiful sunsets
    >Fire pits not a problem and no extra cost, Malcolm happy to assist with firewood or anything we needed for that matter, he is more than happy to help with whatever the issue/request.
    >Shower block a short walk across the field.
    >Very close to Sidmouth and a 20 minute walk to a BEAUTIFUL little quiet beach.
    >Donkey Sanctuary and observatory down the road both in walking distance-you can see the milky way from your tent at night!
    >We chose to stay an extra night (8 in total) which was no problem at all!

We loved this site and feel its a shame that it is a pop up campsite as would love to return more frequently. Our neighbour's when camping felt the same and we all appreciated the laid back attitude of Malcolm.

    Disliked:

It was our fault, but we arrived in the dark after 9pm and due to lack of light took a few minutes to figure out where to place our tent but within 5 minutes or so Malcolm had approached us and showed us where all the facilities were and there were no problems from then :)

Really enjoyed camping here. A bit confused on arrival on where to go, but owner was very helpful & friendly. Large pitch with electric hook up & water very close. Shower block maybe a bit dated, but perfectly fine & showers were very hot! If I wanted luxury then I wouldn’t go camping! It was part of the golf course, & the kids did have to stop football occasionally to let a few golfers pass, but were were out and about during the day so didn’t really affect us.
We took our fire pit & bbq as allowed on site. Dogs & kids loved the space. Very happy campers, would go back again.
