  • Well-maintained wild camping field on a golf course in rural Devon
  • A 10-minute drive from the Jurassic Coast, Branscombe and Sidmouth
  • Golf and snacks on site; beaches, coastal hikes, pubs and shops nearby
Thorn Campsite is a secluded spot in Devon countryside, near Jurassic Coast beaches and seaside resorts – and here’s the thing – it comes with its very own golf course. Yes, golfers pack your clubs and come to enjoy a few rounds on a nine-hole rural course. The flat and neatly manicured camping field has electric hook-ups, loos, a washing-up area and showers, and it’s just a short stroll from the golf course. The clubhouse cleverly doubles as a snack bar with additional loos and showers for site guests, and there’s a wifi connection if you need to keep friends informed of your golfing successes. But it’s not just about the golfing. Families, couples and dogs are also welcome at Thorn, as there’s plenty hereabouts to keep everyone entertained. Take the kids rummaging for fossils along the Jurassic Coast (10 minutes’ drive), and if they have behaved really, really well, the best treat ever is feeding time at The Donkey Sanctuary (five minutes). You can choose from an abundance of lovely beaches along the coastline (Salcombe Regis and Seaton to name just two – both less than 15 minutes’ drive), and the South West Coast Path (10 minutes) reveals swathes of rugged headlands for long-distance hikers. Sidmouth supermarkets will keep you fed and watered, and if you want a night off from cooking, there are traditional pubs in Branscombe (10 minutes) and a whole host of restaurants in Budleigh Salterton (25 minutes).

Power optional grass tent campsite

Liked A lovely site where we felt welcomed. Great location for easy access to many local towns which we visited. Great pub a short drive away. Rural location makes it quiet (except for the occasional donkey chat) The driving range was able to be used cheaply and throughout the day and evening which was a particular hit with my teenage son.

Power optional grass RV campsite

Liked Wonderful campsite really enjoyed ourselves collecting rouge golf balls and creating memories with the kids and dogs. We had a lovely fire in the evening a great pitch spot. The owner Malcolm was very welcoming and knowledgeable. Easy to find location perfect to visit the donkey sanctuary and 20 minute walk to the sea. Perfect location. Facilities were clean and suitable for all your needs.

Power optional grass tent campsite

Liked The owner and staff were lovely and very friendly.
The actual campsite itself was very quiet and well kept.
Lovely walk into town, the hill back up was a bit of a killer but still enjoyable.
Great value for money and we will be back.

Disliked The toilet block was okay but could have just done with being cleaned once a day due to the nesting birds.
Small details such as a sweep up of the outdoor kitchen area and removal of the old broken chair outside would be worth while.
A bench would be great there to use whilst waiting for others.

Power optional grass tent campsite

Liked Super friendly and helpful owner. I fell off my bike and badly hurt my ankle in Sidmouth - he kindly offered to pick me and my bike up from the bottom of the very steep hill up to the campsite, a lifesaver.

Nice camping grounds, felt like a luxury to be pitching our tents on a putting green!
