  • Well-maintained wild camping field on a golf course in rural Devon
  • A 10-minute drive from the Jurassic Coast, Branscombe and Sidmouth
  • Golf and snacks on site; beaches, coastal hikes, pubs and shops nearby
Thorn Campsite is a secluded spot in Devon countryside, near Jurassic Coast beaches and seaside resorts – and here’s the thing – it comes with its very own golf course. Yes, golfers pack your clubs and come to enjoy a few rounds on a nine-hole rural course. The flat and neatly manicured camping field has electric hook-ups, loos, a washing-up area and showers, and it’s just a short stroll from the golf course. The clubhouse cleverly doubles as a snack bar with additional loos and showers for site guests, and there’s a wifi connection if you need to keep friends informed of your golfing successes. But it’s not just about the golfing. Families, couples and dogs are also welcome at Thorn, as there’s plenty hereabouts to keep everyone entertained. Take the kids rummaging for fossils along the Jurassic Coast (10 minutes’ drive), and if they have behaved really, really well, the best treat ever is feeding time at The Donkey Sanctuary (five minutes). You can choose from an abundance of lovely beaches along the coastline (Salcombe Regis and Seaton to name just two – both less than 15 minutes’ drive), and the South West Coast Path (10 minutes) reveals swathes of rugged headlands for long-distance hikers. Sidmouth supermarkets will keep you fed and watered, and if you want a night off from cooking, there are traditional pubs in Branscombe (10 minutes) and a whole host of restaurants in Budleigh Salterton (25 minutes).

What customers say

Relaxed vibe, roomy spots, often on a golf course. Owners are usually friendly and helpful. Guests love the quiet and local attractions, though some note toilet/shower cleanliness, low water pressure, and distance to amenities. Waste bins and power hook-ups can be an issue too. Still, good value, and many would revisit.

Liked Excellent value for money. Cheapest round of golf we've ever played, its a great golf course for kids and beginners. A relaxed countryside feel with beautiful walks. Nice driving range and crazy golf too. Malcom was very accommodating and welcoming. Will definitely be passing through again.

Liked We had a great stay here! We were a little unsure when we realised we were actually camping on part of the golf course...but Malcolm was absolutely lovely and advised us of the best spot to suit us for the week - and he wasn't wrong. We had a really sheltered, quiet spot, not too far from the water tap or the toilet block.
It was fun watching the golfers play past and we even had a go ourselves. The driving range, crazy golf and the course itself were great!
The toilets are clean, the showers are hot, can't fault them at all. The washing up stations are spacious and clean too.
Such a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. Anything we needed, we felt we could nip in to reception and just ask, everyone was very friendly.

Thank you!

Disliked Everything, this is the worst site, so bad we did not stay. The field we were shown to had nothing but old vehicles a metal toilet and lots of rubbish. No stars for this site

Power optional grass tent campsite

Liked Lovely peaceful, no frills site. The owner/manager was friendly and helpful, the site had everything we needed to be comfortable and the location was very convenient.
We didn't bring the firepit with us due to the dry weather, but definitely will next time. Having the choice where to pitch and being able to park by the tent is always appreciated. The ground was nice and level and there was plenty of options for shade so we were very happy with our spot even if it did mean a bit of a trek to the facilities.
Wouldn't hesitate to book again.
