Widdicombe Farm Touring Park: Plenty of room to spread out

General

  • Adults-only farm site 10 minutes from English Riviera beaches
  • Outdoor haven: trails, tors and moors of Dartmoor within 30 minutes
  • Minibus service and fully licensed restaurant and bar on site

When the choice between beachy hols on the English Riviera and lush wanders in stunningly scenic national parks leaves you dithering, make your decision a doddle with a stay at Widdicombe Farm Touring Park, a family-run and adults-only site 10 minutes’ drive from the seaside town of Paignton on the Devon coast.

The site's about 15 minutes from the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and half an hour from Dartmoor National Park, so there are plenty of spectacularly green vistas to hike, bike or drive through within easy reach – not to mention waterfalls, river banks and craggy moors...

If the first thing into your suitcase was a swimming cossie, you’ve packed well for this particular getaway: Paignton’s Preston Sands beach is less than 10 minutes away (there’s a shuttle service from the site). If your quick sandy stroll seems to be picking up speed, turn it into a long-distance jaunt by accessing up the South West Coast Path at either end of the beach.

There’s a small shop on site for groceries if you fancy bringing picnic supplies on your day trips, or you can hold off for a home-cooked dinner at Poppies, the on-site restaurant (open from Easter to September). After that, wander over to Gordon’s bar for a drink, or to take in the live entertainment.

this is a great touring park it is very clean. there is plenty of room between pitches all on hard standing so take good sturdy pegs and mallet if you have an awning. the club house sell a variety of drinks at a reasonable price cheaper than pub prices. the shower and toilet block is excellent .As others have commented the road is noisy nearby so do as we did take some earplugs there are all the main supermarkets within a 15min drive. would definitely recommend .

Superb showers and really enjoyed our meal in Poppies. Great location, with an easy 10 minute ride on our scooter to the beach.

    Disliked:

Campers in tents begging to borrow equipment, two opposite us both arrived with so little gear. No mallet, no stove, no pads and the list goes on.

From the manager...

Hi Tim, I am sure the people you helped out were appreciative that you were kind enough to do so. We all need a helping hand sometimes and spreading a little kindness goes a long way and we thank you for helping them out. We pride ourselves on our facilities and are so plpeased you made the most of your visit both on site and away. See you again.

Too much noise from the road, bins too far away, too many hills, shower blocks too far away, dog walking area next t safe for dogs, big gaps under the gate and it’s too close to the dual carriageway that is very busy and keeps you up all night. They also rip you off for work Wi-Fi, I know because that’s what I do.
Possibly the worst campsite I have been on in 40 years.

From the manager...

We were surprised by some of your comments considering all the positive feedback we receive and the reviews left by others and feel it is a shame we do not appear to have met your expectations. As your review is anonymous I am unable to respond with you directly correcting or confirming any particular points you have raised.

Local attractions

This is Agatha Christie country, so if you’re looking to solve the mystery of what to do during your hols, you're sorted here too.

Make your way into Torquay a 15-minute drive away for the Agatha Christie Mile – a walking tour of spots that inspired the author – and Kents Cavern, a prehistoric cave that served as Hampsley Cavern in her novel The Man in the Brown Suit. For a glimpse of Christie’s personal life, Greenway House at Brixham is where she spent summer and Christmas hols.

If Greenway House whet your appetite for stately homes, zip along to Compton Castle (five minutes) for house and garden tours, or Cockington Country Park (10 minutes) for strolls around the extensive grounds and a glimpse of Cockington Court (now a craft centre). Not enough? Venture further afield for Coleton Fishacre, Buckfast Abbey and the 16-sided A la Ronde, all within 35 minutes.

There are plenty of museums, steam trains and model villages nearby to keep history buffs entertained, but those who prefer more of a living and breathing experience should pad over to Paignton Zoo (within 15 minutes) instead.
