Scenic countryside setting

  • Family-run park on a former stud farm and in a wildlife haven
  • Two and a half miles from the coast
  • Heated outdoor pool, bar, café, shop, takeaway and craft centre
Dithering re which setting you prefer for holiday accommodation – walks in the countryside versus hoofing it to the nearest beach? Try a countryside break by the sea at friendly and family-run Whitehill Country Park. On a former stud farm with converted stables and stone farm buildings, Whitehill is in a wildlife haven deep in the Devon countryside but only two and a half miles from the sands of the English Riviera: guaranteed, of course, to keep all sorts of neigh-sayers happy. Nature fans will champ at the bit to delve into the 40 acres of hill, woodland and countryside around the park, where 130 species of flora and ferns can be recorded neatly in nature-spotting notebooks and where local wildlife abounds: look out for badgers, kestrels, pheasants and buzzards among others. Meanwhile, beach buoys and girls will find the nearest sands only a couple of miles away: it’s but a short drive to the beaches of Paignton, Torquay and Brixham, and onto the 20 or so first-class beaches along this 22-mile stretch. On site there's a heated outdoor pool, plenty of play areas, walking trails, and nature all around; the park has won awards for its approach to wildlife management and conservation. Also around are letterboxing opps, a treasure trail to keep the little treasures occupied, and all the cons of a mod site such as a takeaway, café, shop and supping alfresco while watching the sun go down from the terrace at the Hayloft bar. Those who feel artistic can draw and paint in the indoor Shire Craft Centre; table tennis and a pool table are also on hand for indoor play.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (sloping)

Liked Loved the whole park, was very nice and welcoming. The swimming pool inside was dreamy. Outdoor pool was nice in the sun.

Disliked Being so close to other campers. The showers weren’t as nice as the toilets but still good enough! The sloping pitch was fine until bedtime came and I kept rolling off my bed lol

Electric grass pitch

Liked The pool area, the soft play, the location, the variety of activities

Disliked The slope but I guess that's normal (?), the bathroom facilities but that might just be me and not liking communal bathing areas, and the late night noise from some of the people there.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The area was well looked after, the outside Pool was one of the highlights of the holiday for us, the other was playing Bingo (which is cash only) in the Granary.

Staff were very helpful and pleasant

Food and drink was nice but expensive for what it is (one round of two alcoholic drinks and two J2Os over £18.00)

Overall entertainment was good it’s more aimed at pre-teens but lots of different activities throughout the day, some free of charge like the Pool party and other activities were chargeable such as axe throwing £12.00 per person.

Disliked The tent was on a slight slope like many others across the site.

The largest negative for us with two teenagers was the WiFi. Although it states that it has free WiFi, depending on your location it’s sporadic at the best of times, unable to stream, unable to watch social media, unable to game.

In certain parts of the site the phone signal was poor. Both cellar and internet calling.

Electric grass pitch

Liked We loved the location and how easy it was to get about in our 7.5m motor home. Day trips were plentiful. The dog field was brilliant as was the woodland walks. Showers had loads of hot water and I loved the facility of mop and squeegee to ensure the cubicle was clear. Pool was beautiful on some of our hot days and the staff were beyond lovely and friendly. Loads going on most days.

Disliked Unfortunately some campers didn’t quite keep to site etiquette. Possibly some more reminders about cleaning showers after use and policing of noise after 11 for large groups especially. A large group of 5 different campers were placed by us and they used our pitch as a cut through to each other which I didn’t like - maybe put some thought into the placement of large groups if accepting them?

Local attractions

The sights and activities around this part of Devon will suit all tastes: Dartmoor for active adventures, Totnes and Dartmouth for history and heritage – and the 22 miles of the English Rivieria for beaches, watersports, fishing and boat trips. The closest beach to Whitehill Country Park is Goodrington, a mile south of Paignton. After you’ve stretched out on the red sands, there are a few other options to check out: learn about the history of the English Riviera at the free Seashore Centre, pedal your way around the boating lake, or take the kids to the waterslides and pools of Splashdown at Quaywest. The English Riviera is of course also Agatha Christie territory – Greenway House was her holiday home (also where David Suchet as Poirot filmed his last scenes. Sniff.) If you can’t make it to the annual Agatha Christie festival (tsk), amble along the 10 landmarks of the Agatha Christie Mile in Torquay; eight of the sites have clues spelling out the name of a Christie character. Hint: it’s probably not ‘Miss Marple’.
