Middle Corscombe Farm: The outdoor pool

General

  • Off-grid camping with secluded grass pitches in the Devon countryside
  • Five minutes’ drive to Dartmoor National Park; Castle Drogo 25 minutes
  • Swimming pool and sauna, plus shared barn with kitchen and games room

Set in 4.5 acres of gorgeous Devon countryside near Okehampton, Middle Corscombe Farm is a place that's just got a small number of off-grid grass pitches cleverly hidden away from each other in paddock and meadow landscapes. Each pitch is nicely secluded to give the feeling of an exclusive hideaway for large family groups, single families or loved-up couples.

Whether you’re after a rural stroll to spot the wildlife (look out for deer leaping across the meadow), helping the kids to build a den or enjoying a picnic by a gurgling stream, there’s plenty of room for everyone to lose themselves around the grounds. Kids can play Pooh sticks, and you can all watch the sunset together from around the campfire or eat alfresco on warmer days.

If the weather's behaving, have a leisurely dip in the swimming pool. On any rainy days, magic your cares away in the sauna, or simply drift down to the repurposed hay barn to cook and chat with fellow guests in the campers’ kitchen (powered by wind turbine and a solar panels, so eco-credentials are excellent here) and dine out on the covered decking.

Feeling idle? Laze away the hours on nattily upcycled denim sofas in the living area; if the kids get restless, send them to burn off energy with a game of pool or table football.

If you need to restock edible goodies, supermarkets in Okehampton (10 minutes’ drive) are your best bet.

Please note

No electric barbecues allowed.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/06 and 30/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Everything! There is a lovely pool area which you can book for private use, sauna, a gorgeous barn with books, games, comfy sofas and a complete kitchen, woodland walk on site. The facilities are newly fitted and very clean. A brilliant stay that I have recommended to friends and family.

Very well organised with lots of space around each pitch. Good, clean facilities with most things you could think of needing. The pool was lovely. We had the top pitches which was nice and open.

    Disliked:

The only thing we missed was a flat area to play ball games with the children.
The top pitches would potentially get very hot as there is no shade there.
Not a dislike but just to note that you can’t park next to your tent so everything needs carrying/wheelbarrowing. The owner did help
with his Land Rover, so takes a little bit longer to set up/pack down.

Many thanks for your feedback it is appreciated

The 3 paddock pitches are south facing so do get a lot of sun which is ideal for some campers, for those that like it cooler we have another 2 pitches in our meadow which is shaded by trees and next to the stream.

Campers can also bring gazebos to provide shade and we do have an 81 square metre barn which has seating and tables to play games and escape the sun on hot days and rain on wet days. In addition there is a a mezzanine for children to play pool, table football or air hockey.

We also have an acre wood which can be used by guests with a clearing at the far end.

All feedback is appreciated and will help us improve our communication for next year.

This is a wonderful little site that is kept as natural as possible. There is a fantastic communal barn set up with a kitchen, seating area and lots of games to play or music and books to pass some peaceful time. It’s also a great place to escape the worst of the sun at the moment.
Located near to Okehampton where you will find pubs, restaurants and most major supermarkets.

    Disliked:

My main reason for booking this site was because they had a pool but we never got to use it. You have to book for private 1 hour slots between 11 & 3. 5 pitches 4 slots, you see the issue. The kids on the site all had terrific fun together, they would have loved being able to play in the pool together. Maybe something to look at, kids fun hour.
Access is down quite a long single lane that has few passing places so it’s quite awkward if you meet people coming the other way.
You can’t park at your pitch so you have to take all your stuff by trolley to the pitch and a few of the pitches are at the bottom of quite a steep hill. I suppose this can’t be helped as the meadow is kept as natural as possible with pathways cut through the tall grass. In fairness, this does keep the wildlife such as rabbits and deer visiting the meadow.

Many thanks for your feedback it is appreciated. In future can I suggest you check the details of your stay on the Pitchup site as it clearly states
- No parking by the pitch and we did offer the service of the landrover to drop your gear at the pitch
- Pool is available between 11 and 3 and guests can book slots in the barn - you clearly didn’t book a slot for the Saturday and there were 5 slots available as one guest used the pool from 10 am (they asked if they could and we created a slot for them)

Kids fun hour in the pool is a good idea but not for us as we have other guests that we need to consider. However guests can combine slots with each other if they so wish

The lane access - The lane down is about half a mile long and there are 2 ways to access from the South and North of Corscombe lane. As we are a small hamlet with only 6 dwellings, the likely hood of coming across another vehicle are slim but possible. Clearly we can’t do anything about this but it has its advantages in terms of feeling of seclusion and keeping car speeds down. The hedgerow either side of the lane also offer a great natural environment for wildlife.

This was wonderful, we camped down in the wooded area, it was private and peaceful. The owners were excellent hosts, they have obviously worked very hard on the camping space and facilities. They did everything to make sure we would have a good stay. The converted barn for a dry space to spend time, was well equipped with cooking essentials to use in the kitchen, books and games and some comfy sofas. The pool and sauna were great and we loved the fact we could use these privately. We will definitely be visiting again!
