General

  • Family friendly-site with spectacular views out to sea
  • Private stretch of beach leading to a secluded cove
  • Pool, kids' clubs, soft play and playground

Ever wanted to channel your inner mermaid? Sandaway Beach Holiday Park near Ilfracombe in Devon has a private stretch of beach, leading to the secret spot of Mermaids Cove for secluded swims and sunbathes. (If you happen to glimpse a topless mermaid, say the site staff, just look the other way…)

The park is placed right on the edge of the ocean on a low cliff, with the rocky foreshore and sand of the private beach a mere three minutes’ stroll down a purty stepped path. If you’re not scrambling over the rocks to Mermaids Cove, soak up the rays at the sun trap here (make sure you’re aware of the tide times before you go down).

Away from the beach, there’s plenty happening parkwise for those who might get restless just soaking up the sun: Sandaway Beach is a John Fowler Holiday Parks site so is crammed with things to do for merpeople of all sizes – kids’ clubs for little squirts, free heated outdoor pool, indoor soft play area and an outdoor playground alongside pool tables, amusements and an internet café.

Guests can also use the facilities at Sandaway Beach’s sister park Combe Martin Beach Holiday Park a few minutes away: this one has its own private beach too (Newberry) and the Sea Spray Club for beachside drinks and dining as well as evening entertainment and more kids’ clubs.

Vittles at Sandaway are covered with the pub grub and basket meals at the Smugglers Bar, where there’s also evening entertainment, free wifi and a gape at the Exmoor and sea views (children are welcome in the pub). Golf, fishing, watersports and farm parks are all close to hand nearby.

This site is a member of John Fowler Holidays group.

The showers did not work in the shower block. Spoke to a maintenance man who suggested using the disabled showers but I could not get any hot water so gave up in the end!

Showers and toilets were rather disappointing. Your private beach is not really accessible, the step and handle railing need to be looked at. Although the touring pitch is very uneven not all fields are flat.

The most disgusting site I have ever stayed in. Tent field on a slope. 30/08/2017

The only good thing about this place was the location. Everything else was a mess.

    Disliked:

This was the worst site I have ever stayed on. The pitching field was on a slope which made everyone wake up feeling dizzy. You couldn't put any objects on tables because it would just slide off. The field was pure mud and it was unkept with overgrown hedges and bushes which meant you couldn't appreciate what would be a stunning view of the sea.
The showers and toilets were the most disgusting I have ever seen. The showers hardly ever worked and when it did the flow was very weak and the temperature scalding hot so impossible to shower kids.
Even the clubhouse toilets were disgusting with a overpowering smell of urine which you could smell from the eating area.
The staff were friendly enough but didn't seem know what they were supposed to be doing so they just did a lot of nothing and talked between themselves.
The restaurant on the other hand was very good with really friendly and efficient service but it's only because it is a separate business and has nothing to do with John Fowler.
Needless to say I will not be going back.

Terrible camp site 29/08/2017

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Harry F. Mobile phone icon Confirmed

  • Non-electric grass tent pitch

  • Liked:

The views, if you could have seen them past all of the overgrowth.

    Disliked:

    - The camping pitch was on a steep, slippery slope which made it difficult and very messy (slipping because of the mud and the hill) to pitch the tent. When it came to the evening and you wanted to either chill out on some chairs or go to bed, you would be constantly slipping and sliding down the bank, constantly having to reposition yourself. You couldn't put your drinks, food or a heater down because it would fall over. The nights sleep was terrible, waking up every few hours to find your feet going through the bottom of your tent, not forgetting because of just how uncomfortable sleeping on a hill is. There wasn't really any grass there, so where you trod down or drove over, mud would appear.. which resulted in clogged up shoes and camping gear full of mud and what seemed to be clay. The view would have been amazing if the surrounding area had of been maintained, the whole pitch was surrounded by overgrown bushes, trees and weeds - lots of nettles! Because of this it was also very dark.
    - Showers, both male and female did not work. When turned on, the water would either trickle out down the pipe against the wall, or not come out at all. When we spoke to various members of staff, we were told it was either because of the time of day (everyone was having showers) or that the showers had been down for awhile, and that you were due some new ones. We can confirm it was not the time of day, as we tried them at various times of the day throughout the whole weekend we were with you, and not once did they work.
    - Views, as mentioned before, you have an amazing view that unfortunately can not be seen not only from the campsite, but also from most of your caravan pitches too due to so much overgrowth. A little maintainance i.e hedge cutting and tree trimming would go a long way!!
    - Facilities were poor. Obviously as i've already mentioned, the showers did not work, at all. The toilets on the other hand, only worked when they wanted too. In the female toilets there was one toilet role in only one toilet (out of what, 6-7??) throughout the whole weekend we were there. We ended up using our own. The toilet blocks male, female and unisex also smelt like they were soaked in wee. The smell was that strong, you wouldn't even go to brush your teeth at the sink in there.
The floors were also very very wet, covered in mud and very slippery - they were like this morning till night, i never saw a mop and bucket in sight for the whole 4 days! And i don't think the floors had seen one for awhile either.
    - Opening times were dodgy. You never really knew when the shop or diner was going to be opening or closing because the times as stated were nothing to go by.
    - Staff. The staff were mostly all friendly, not very helpful but at least most of them had a smile on their faces when you smiled at them or spoke to them. It seemed as though not very many of them really knew what they were suppose to be doing as you would always see them sitting having a fag on their phones. If asked any questions, they couldn't reply with any helpful answers.. those as little as, will it be possible we please have some more toilet paper in the ladies. We still did not receive any unfortunately.
    - Health and safety. On the way down to the sea area, you have to go down some very uneven and slippery steps (and lots of them!) unfortunately the hand rail was very wobbly and unstable, so much so that half way down it had already broken off and was lying down on the floor (sharp bits sticking out etc) and obviously nothing to hold on to along that stretch of the steps. When you reach the rocky beach area, you will find more of the hand rails that have been thrown down there, again very sharp rusty bits sticking up - it only takes a child to slip and fall on it.
    - The site itself is positioned in such a lovely area, if you had only of maintained and looked after your facilities and guests a little better. Unfortunately the worst camp site we have ever pitched up on.

Lied to and led on 24/08/2017

Nice surrounding area. Very nice staff when we were there - credit to them for appearing caring when it all went wrong, however there was a feeling that they were putting on a good smile and brave face for the chaos in the background at the behest of management...

    Disliked:

I wish I had more time to go into every detail so that others don't suffer the same consequences that we did, but I've wasted enough time with John Folwer and Pitchup. For the readers benefit...
We arrived to find they had double booked. They claimed to have called, left voicemail and even spoke to me in warning of this, but they hadn't done any of this. I proved to three members off staff that there was no evidence of this, which they agreed to. There were plenty of lies surrounding this and at one point my phone number disappeared off their system which was suspicious (someone tying to cover their tracks?)
Hoping to wake up to the sea view in a safari tent we stayed in a static the first night, which some people may prefer but not us and that's not what we booked or looked forward to. After an 8 hour drive and being lied to I had to sleep without any pillows or bedding and there was no hot water. When discussing this the next day with staff, they promised (I didn't ask) a full refund. Based on this promise, and how nice the staff were on the face of things, we decided to stay for the next two nights reluctantly. After pestering for a week we got a partial refund and then silence from John Folwer and Pitchup. If they stuck to their promise of a refund I'd let some things slide as you can't expect 100% when it comes to bookings etc, but to be lied to and promised, then backtracking and not following through... terrible customer service.

    Additionally...
The shower facilities were old and grotty.
The toilets in the bar stank of urine, you could smell it from where everyone was eating.
They are clearly understaffed, keeping customers waiting.
The lady running the food section (separate business) was really nice but clearly fed up of John Fowler too.

I lost countless time during our stay taking the focus off it being a holiday, and afterwards chasing John Fowler and Pitchup. Consequently we will not go near either again!

The staff were welcoming on arrival.

After discussing the issues highlighted below with the management team, I was promptly offered a full refund for my booking.

    Disliked:

I chose not to stay at this campsite. When I arrived at the park, I was given directions to the Tent pitch area. This was a very small circular field with a 20 degree slope. There were no provisions for fire breaks and vehicle access was almost impossible due to the mud at the entrance to the field.
I was very disappointed at the severe lack of flat ground and safety procedures in the tent pitch area.
There was a family in the tent pitch area who explained how terrible their stay had been, they were leaving a day early because of their experience.
I had to waste valuable holiday time in order to find an appropriate alternative location for myself and two young children on their first camping experience.

The Management team agreed that the tent pitch field should not be advertised.

The location of the site has great views,
With steps going down to a small cove which the kids loved exploring while the side was out.
The food at the clubhouse was very good and great value for money.
All the kids loved the outdoor pool which was heated, keeping them busy for hours!
we enjoyed the Saturday night entertainment, we even won the music quiz, top prize a bottle of bubbly.

    Disliked:

The non electric pitches are on a hill so we woke up a lot sliding down our camp beds,
The water pressure of the showers wasn't very good.

Directions

Leave the M5 at Junction 27 and take the A361 towards Barnstaple for 26 miles. Then go onto the A399 towards Combe Martin. Just past Combe Martin seafront you’ll find the park 500 yards up the hill, on the right.

Please note: All distances on this page are calculated "as the crow flies" - please check actual distance depending on your mode of travel using the Get directions button above.

Local attractions

A six-minute stroll from Sandaway Beach Holiday Park will take you to the fishing village of Combe Martin for boat trips, pubs, restaurants, thirteenth century church and another beach: one of six within easy driving distance of the park. Combe Martin also has the Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park with over 250 species of wildlife, animatronic dinosaurs, a canyon train ride and swimming with sea lions.

Just over a mile away from Sandaway there’s the hamlet and harbour at Watermouth with Watermouth Castle and theme park; there’s a Victorian museum, an underground water show and suits of armour to eye nervously in the castle, and a theatre, rides and an adventure playground outside.

The seaside town of Ilfracombe is four miles from Sandaway and there are several beaches here and between Ilfracombe and the three-mile stretch at Woolacombe ten minutes’ drive away: the hand-carved Tunnels beaches are a hoot for exploring the Victorian etiquette of the day and should keep the kids amused for hours.

Arty sorts visting Ilfracombe should pack their paintbox and inspiration: the town has a whopping total of eight art galleries (Damien Hirst owns several properties here) and the controversial Hirst statue Verity stands at the entrance to the harbour. If your art loving is of a more dramatic type, take yourself along to the award-winning Landmark Theatre, aka Madonna’s Bra (you’ll see why when you get there. The kids hopefully will not.)

Day trippers feeling less sporty can reach Barnstaple, Dartmoor, Cornwall, cobbled and carfree Clovelly, Lynmouth, Lynton and loads more within driving distance, or take the kids along to a(nother) theme park: Milky Way Adventure Park and The Big Sheep, both outside Bideford, should tire them out nicely.

Leaving the car behind? A bus service runs near Sandaway Beach Holiday Park on most days from March to October.
