- 7 min walk to Hele Bay
Into the valley – and onto the beach! Seeking seclusion and serenity as well as sand and surf on your north Devon holiday? We suspect you’ll be hugely happy with the location of Hele Valley Holiday Park, placed in a placid sheltered valley bordered by hills, but only minutes away from Hele Bay Beach, the South West Coast Path and the lively town of Ilfracombe.
Plonk yourself at this very friendly family-run park to delve into the best of north Devon: a seven-minute saunter will take you to the watersports, rockpools and beach of Hele Bay; 20 minutes on foot leads to more of the same plus art galleries, restaurants and an aquarium at Ilfracombe, and the three-mile surfing stretch of Woolacombe is within 15 minutes’ drive. Family fun at the likes of Watermouth Castle, the Milky Way Adventure Park and Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park are also easy to get to from here – as the kids will no doubt point out, a shorter drive means more time among the meerkats and ball pits…
Keep the smile on your visage when viewing the facilities at Hele Valley Holiday Park too, as the family owners have been running the park for over 40 years and strive to keep things pretty perfect on all accounts. ‘Immaculate’, second to none’ and ‘some of the best I’ve encountered’ are a few of the laurels lavished on the loos and showers, which have free hot water, disabled access and individual cubicles. Pitches are equally well-maintained, flat, sheltered and with a choice of electric hook-up, or maybe you wood prefer to bed down in the heated glamping pods instead?
The specialised nature trail on site will keep the kids busy spotting all sorts of species at the bird, bat and dormouse boxes, feeding tables and bird baths; afterwards, send them off to the play area, of a quality we adults are also tempted by (soft rubber bark is there to land upon if Dad takes a tumble around the tyres).
Hele Valley Holiday Park also has a launderette, washing-up area and wifi is available throughout the park for a small fee. Supplies are close by too: two pubs serving food within five minutes’ walk, and Tesco/Lidl as well as many independent shops a short drive away at Ilfracombe.

From the M5 take Junction 27 onto the A361. Continue on this road to Barnstaple and then take the A39 (passing the hospital on the right) to join the A3230 to Ilfracombe. Continue on this road for approximately 12 miles and at the traffic lights turn right to join the A399 towards Combe Martin. Pass Ilfracombe Swimming Baths and Rugby Club on the left where you will start to see our brown tourist signs. Follow the brown Hele Valley signs for approximately 400m to take a very sharp right (it is advised that long vehicles should continue down the road and turn around first). Continue down to a T-junction and a right turn will take you to Hele Valley Holiday Park.
Alongside beaches and the shops and sights of Ilfracombe, there’s quite a bit more to do within walking distance of Hele Valley Holiday Park: Ilfracombe Golf Club’s 18-hole course with sunset views of Lundy Island, a heated indoor pool and sauna, eleventh century (and supposedly haunted) Chambercombe Manor, and the sixteenth century watermill at Old Corn Mill are all within ten minutes’ amble.
Also within ten minutes to take you quite a bit further, the South West Coast Path can be accessed from Ilfracombe to climb up to Hillsborough and pass Hele Bay and Watermouth to Combe Martin. But do take quite some time in Ilfracombe first to browse around its shops, galleries, gardens and museum, then have a boat or fishing trip out from its handsome harbour…
Travelling slightly further afield, your little monkeys will have the time of their little lives with the myriad of child-friendly parks and entertainment around north Devon. Watermouth Castle and Family Theme Park is an odd but utterly fab mix of Victorian treasures, modern rides, maze and gnomes in their very own land, while Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park has everything from meerkats to wolves, bugs and birds of prey among its 25 acres and 250 species of animals and animatronic dinosaurs. And do try The Big Sheep theme park for a splendidly baaarmy day out at sheep racing, horse whispering, the tractor track, brewery shows and massive indoor play area.
Make your way to the Milky Way Adventure Park at Bideford to swoop on Devon’s tallest rollercoaster and watch swooping birds of prey demonstrations, snuggle and feed baby goats and lambs, or slide around the huge indoor play centre (there are slides for the big folk too). At Barnstaple, the conservation and breeding programmes of excellent Exmoor Zoo mean kids can educate themselves on exotic species, with half-hourly activities in summer on otter and wallaby feeding, creepy crawly time and guided tours.
