General

  • Warm and welcoming family-run site near Exmoor National Park
  • Hiking, climbing, canoeing, angling and stargazing within easy reach
  • Remote park with heaps of green space and smashing views over Exmoor

If you plan on venturing down to Devon for its spectacular walks, historic hotspots and outdoorsy pursuits – and perhaps for wide open space and resplendent remoteness, a super friendly vibe, first-rate facilities and meticulously manicured grounds to boot – make Zeacombe House Caravan Park your next Devon break base.

A vastly varied landscape of heathland, farmed and wooded valleys, high wooded coast and marshland lies north of the site and altogether comprises Exmoor National Park, which covers more than 18,810 acres of green and peaceful space popular with all manner of outdoorsy sort, including hikers, mountain bikers, canoeists, anglers, climbers, nature spotters and stargazers.

The grounds here are top notch, and the welcome very warm: pitches are set among a lushly landscaped park lined with pristinely preened lawns and dotted with mature trees, shrubs and rockeries, all bordered partly by ancient beech hedging. All this – along with spectacular vistas towards Exmoor – turns the simple pleasure of strolling the park around into something rather more sublime, so walking off that extra barbecue burger or two après dinner shall be anything but choresome with a stay here.

If you’re bringing any fido friends along on hol with you, the dog walking area will keep them amply entertained on days when you’re not taking them with you on long hikes or to see North Devon’s coastal sights; and being a pooch-friendly park, dogs are allowed off the leash here too, so guests are gently reminded to keep the gate firmly closed, lest any woofers wander off.

There’s plenty to keep you entertained around the lands that surround the site, so the owners have focused on doing a stellar job of maintaining the grounds and providing first-rate facilities: the little convenience store will have whatever essential groceries and other camping bits you require, and the information centre has got your outdoorsy pursuits and sightseeing days off-site covered just nicely. If you’re a certified radiophile, this site’s definitely going to be on your wavelength, as a radio communications shop is here too... But fear not – for those into the rather more conventional communication method of emailing, a free wifi service is also available.

Our first stay here. We arrived to a very warm welcome. Offered a cup of coffee whist booking in.

We were able to pitch wherever we wanted, which was great. Pitches were very spacious.

The whole site is flat, with a tarmac road right around, so walking our 2 dogs was great. There was also a dog walking grassed area.

Plenty of bins, recycling crates, water taps, disposal points, laundry room, washing up facilities and free WiFi.

Toilet & shower blocks were kept clean, tidy & smelling lovely. Shower rooms were spacious & water was lovely & hot.

Being able to arrive & depart anytime was perfect for us. No rushing around.

Overall, our stay with our 2 dogs was really enjoyable, even 'Storm Brian' couldn't ruin it for us!!

Would definitely recommend this site and would absolutely stay again.

Local attractions

It's a short 12-minute drive to Zeacombe’s local town of Dulverton, known as the as the Southern gateway to Exmoor. A highly handsome Devon settlement between the Barle and Exe rivers, Dulverton’s central streets are lined with boutique shops, gift emporiums, tearooms and various other styles of watering hole and eatery, plus – handy if you’re planning on hunting or fishing – there’s a gun and tackle shop in the town too.

While you’re over that way, the Dulverton Circular Walk spans 3.5 miles and runs upstream alongside part of the River Barle valley from the town, taking trampers over Marsh Bridge and gently ascending along an ancient byway before returning back down along another byway back into Dulverton. Be sure to bring your comfiest walking boots, because plenty more highly scenic hiking trails network the rest of Exmoor National Park’s moorland, forested valleys and high coastal heathland.

The 1,000-year-old National Trust-owned Dunster Castle is a 40-minute drive away if you fancy a spot of history and botanical exploration; its subtropical gardens are home to four different microclimates and there’s a fully restored 18th-century working watermill among a peaceful river-garden setting to explore too. If you really fancy arriving here in style, hop on a vintage steam locomotive carriage on the West Somerset Railway from Bishops Lydeard, 45 minutes’ drive away from base, to take in some cracking coastal views along the way.

Elsewhere, the famed North Devon surf spots of Saunton Sands, Croyde and Woolacombe are all within an hour’s drive of Zeacombe, and an adventure sports organiser can be found 50 minutes’ drive away over in the popular coastal resort of Minehead.
