General

  • Small family-run site on a smallholding in Dartmoor National Park
  • Close to River Teign and Two Moors Way; 25 minutes' drive to Exeter
  • Simple pitches with well-kept facilities, plus play area and hammocks

Three Hares Campsite is a small family-run site in the Dartmoor National Park, part of a 25-acre smallholding run by friendly Chinnie and Henry.

Simple, secluded and scenic – that’s the style of this little Devon site full of wildflowers and trees and bordering a little stream. It’s got hammocks set up in the willow trees and a small play area with a tree swing for the kids, and welcomes barbecues and campfires (as long as they’re kept off the ground). Drewsteington (five minutes’ drive/20 minutes’ walk away) has a well-stocked shop for supplies, and there’s a fab farm shop five minutes away for top-notch sausages and local veg to grill.

There’s much to do in the surrounding area, whether you’re planning hikes on the Two Moors Way, bike rides on the Wray Valley Trail or Granite Way, kayaking, swimming and climbing around the River Teign or simply sampling all the Devon cream teas you can possibly manage. Exeter’s about a 25-minute drive away for a city fix, and you can get to beach days within about 40 minutes.

This is a simple and eco-friendly site but all the necessary facilities are in place: guests have access to fresh water, hot (and strong) showers, flushing toilets, a chemical waste point and a lovely timber-framed washing-up area. Sorry, but no dogs are allowed on site as it has sheep for neighbours.

Fab little campsite, stayed in the Bell tent and friends camped in own tent next to us, had our own field which was amazing for the kids to run around and tire themselves out. Henry the owner was amazing, so accommodating, showed me how to use everything, was very friendly, supplied me with gas and wood for the campfire, even supplied my friend with a cup of coffee to start the day! Toilets very clean and shower was amazing. Chickens and horses on site we’re a bonus for the kids, even had a little visit from the chickens. Great base for visiting local attractions, easy to find and some great local information/maps in the reception area. Directed us to a perfect spot for river swimming and Sunday lunch. Will definitely be back soon!

This was a great place to stay, the field itself only holds about 10 pitches so it was quiet and everyone spoke to each other and the children played together too. There are swings a bike and go cart that belong to the owners left out for the kids to play on. The toilets and showers are kept clean and the water is hot hot 🔥 the pressure of the showers are amazing. There are 2 washing up sinks outside but be careful the hot water is scolding. There are a pair of geese that walk around and a very friendly chicken that will escape and pop round to say hi 🤣. In reception there is a large fridge and freezer for campers use for free. Just pop your name on a bag and use as needed. All this is not even a minute walk from the field, fantatsic facilities. The owners are very helpful and friendly, they will come round and chat and offer help with anything you may need. The stream runs along the bottom of the field, the sound at night is amazing as it babbles along. You cannot go into the stream. Don't camp too near the edge because the ground is very wet and soggy but there is plenty of room to move about in. We went as 2 family groups together in 2, 8 man tents (children age 5 -14) and had space to spare. Fire pits can be hired for £3.50 a night and a huge wheelbarrow of fire wood for £5, fantatsic value for what you get. Getting around the local area provide lovely long walks through fields and forests or driving up and down very narrow scary roads 😳 we walked to fingle Bridge, it took us about an hour but the walk was worth it and when we got there it was amazing, defo a must visit, along with canonfeign falls. There is a water tap in the field as well as near the toilets. Thank you Three Hares we had a great stay with you.

    Disliked:

The only dislike I have is the hot water in the washin up sinks is too hot to touch, I couldn't let my children help wash up because it scolds.

The showers are amazing!!! The facilities are cleaned regularly. There is a fridge and freezer that guests can use during the stay. The swings and tree rope as well as the bikes and go karts left on site where a hit with the children. Beautiful walks. The owners are very friendly and helpful, will go out of their way to help you. Wood in wheelbarrows are a bargain for the campfire. We loved being able to hear the stream behind us throughout, very tranquil. The geese and escapee chicken were a highlight with all. We ventured to Canonteign falls which is beautiful and a good walk as well as Fingle Bridge where you can paddle and further up swim. We went with 4 children, 5, 7, 8 and 11 years and all loved the whole holiday and days out. Signal slightly lacking, however not a bad thing as that is the whole point of the holiday is to get away from it all.
