  • 42-acre eco site with wide views of the north Cornwall coast
  • Footpath to Porthtowan beach; 10 minutes' drive to St Agnes
  • Vegetarian café on site; campfires and barbecues permitted
Off to the north Cornwall coast and fancy being able to walk to the beach easily from where you’re staying? The place is Mount Pleasant Eco Park, and the beach in question is Porthtowan, a gorgeous long sandy stretch with plenty of space to play in on the sand or up in the dunes and a summer lifeguard service for swimmers and surfers. Getting there simply involves a strong along the footpath that runs directly from the site (and also takes you to a couple of pubs and takeaways within a short stroll too). The pretty village of St Agnes and larger town of Redruth are both within a 10-minute drive should you need more eating/drinking/shopping options. It all adds up to a fabulous location – but the team here haven’t relied on that alone to draw people to their park. Much love and care has gone into setting up this site, which is part of a 42-acre community space providing lots of useful things to local residents (think organic garden space, eco-friendly workspaces and an education programme). Events are often hosted here, so you may well be able to catch some live music or a traditional skills workshop if you like. No worries if you’d like to do your own thing though – there’s so much space here that you can always find a peaceful corner well away from the action even when there’s an event in full swing. All facilities have been well thought out here – compost toilets and solar showers among them. Barbecues and campfires are permitted if you’d like to try outdoor cooking; if not, the café is open Wednesday to Sunday for tasty plant-based meals using local produce.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (large, wild)

Liked: Very relaxed. Like being able to park wherever, loved the hubbub of the wedding going on too.

Disliked: Almost too relaxed! We didn't see a single member of staff the entire stay! Which was fine for us but just from the campsite's point of view, we could have literally just rocked up and stayed three days and not paid. Also, shower very temperamental.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: The view from the campsite was beautiful. Everything else was awful.

Disliked: In thirty years of camping this site has some of the worst managed facilities I’ve ever seen. The compost toilet, a brilliant idea - poorly executed. For a start the sawdust was kept outside so you had to finish your business and then go and get the sawdust to throw down the hole. Many people clearly didn’t bother. Also the sawdust was unuseable as it was stored outside and had clumped together in to one hard mass. The toilets in the shower block weren’t much better. The other people on the site who were also using the toilets seemed unfamiliar with the concept of getting their waste into the hole (as opposed to all over the seat) and unable to locate the flush. If you want to catch Ebola, these toilets are for you. I’ve seen nicer facilities in a Comic Relief appeal. I did my washing up one morning and heard a scream from the shower. A lady with a hair full of shampoo asked me if I wouldn’t mind not running the hot tap while she rinsed. I’m just glad I wasn’t the one in the shower. The campers next door to us had both had dogs, both off lead. We came back to our pitch one day and found muddy paw prints all over our camping chairs inside our awning. The rules on this site are more like “vague suggestions”. Such a shame as this site is in a beautiful location and has bags of potential. The campsite manager was very helpful and used his land rover to tow us out of the mud and off our pitch.

Shepherd's hut (three person)

Liked: I needed this stay to get away from it all and this did not disappoint. Just me and my dog. Clean, quiet and simple. Fabulous to sit and read and a great base for some exploration. I loved it and will be back for more.

Liked: Comfort Shepherd hut, great bar & vegan cafe.

Disliked: Thought the canteen was open at weekends between 6pm-9pm. On arrival this weekend it was closed. Not a big deal though and minor inconvenience in the end.

Local attractions

Porthtowan beach will almost certainly be your first stop (possibly even the very minute you’ve dropped your bags off) but then what? Well, perhaps a walk along the South West Coast Path to see some more of that coastal scenery (Chapel Porth and the Wheal Coates mine are not far off), or a direct route to one of the other gorgeous beaches – perhaps Gwithian (15 minutes’ drive) or Perranporth (20 minutes). A stop in the lovely village of St Agnes (10 minutes) is a must, and art lovers will surely also want to head over to St Ives (25 minutes) to explore Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum. The north Cornwall coast has plenty to keep you busy for many a day, but if you fancy a change of scenery it’s not far to get to the south coast for days at Falmouth, Trebah Garden, Glendurgan Garden and Gyllyngvase beach (all about half an hour away).
