Via Ferrata Cornwall: Sea view from the site

General

  • In the grounds of an outdoor pursuits centre 20 minutes from Falmouth
  • Watersports, climbing and archery among the on-site activities
  • Café on site serving breakfasts, lunches and homemade cakes

In search of a bit of adrenaline-fuelled excitement on your travels? Want it right on your doorstep? It doesn’t come much closer than at Via Ferrata Cornwall in the grounds of a family-friendly outdoor pursuits centre 20 minutes’ drive from Falmouth.

Around the 60-acre grounds are loads of activities to get your heart racing, including a via ferrata course (the ultimate high-wire adventure involving scaling cliff faces, balancing across high-wire bridges and flying through the air on a zipwire), watersports (canoeing, kayaking and paddleboarding), coasteering (in the on-site quarry), rock climbing and archery. There’s an extra charge for these activities, but you’re free to roam the adventure nature trails to spot wildlife and learn about the natural world from the information boards as you wander.

There are enough facilities to keep you comfortable, including a washing-up area and a toilet block with clean toilets and hot showers. Much of the site’s electricity is provided by a wind turbine and solar panels, so you can have a pretty clear conscience on the eco front.

Pick up everything you need at the nearest supermarket, a 10-minute drive away. Alternatively, the on-site café run by The Cornish Barista offers breakfast, brunch, lunch and delicious homemade cakes, with vegan options. Ten per cent of the café sales go towards the site owner’s launching charity BF Adventure, helping Cornwall’s most vulnerable children.

The site is clean and tidy with great facilities including showers, toilets, cafe and washing up facilities, I really liked the fact that there is washing up liquid and cleaning cloths to be used, firepits are allowed which is great. The staff are very friendly and helpful and there is a lovely nature walk and the possibility of participating in other activities for a price.

    Disliked:

Although there is a fire pit on site there was no firewood to purchase which would of been nice. I found the showers temperamental, some not turning on and some running more cold then hot but as it's camping it was nice just to have the opportunity to shower. It would have been nice to have been able to sign up for activities in reception but to do this we would of had to have signed up online which is not necessarily possible whilst you are camping.

Quiet, only a couple of other campers there.
Walks around the old quarries and the views as it's on top of a hill.
Excellent washing up area with washing-up liquid and sponges.
Lots of hot water in the showers and no time limit.
    On site cafe.
I even saw and heard a cookoo flying across the camping field one morning.

    Disliked:

A short bank or hedge to screen the camping area from the access road would make it a little more private. There is currently just a fence.

The location was lovely, peaceful and quiet and within easy reach of a variety of beaches and coves and other visitor attractions and highlights. The staff were friendly and the onsite Cornish Barista cafe served wonderful cakes, fabulous breakfasts (not short on portions) and a variety of hot drinks. The extra special luxury hot chocolate with the giant marshmallow was a hit with my son! The associated activities with BF Adventure at the quarries were well organised and supervised and great fun. This was a good site with only basic facilities, but clean and well maintained.

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike. This is their first season for camping and welcomed any feedback, which was only to suggest a few minor useful bits and pieces such as provision of a dedicated ice-block freezer.

This was a fantastic campsite. We really enjoy camping that feels more basic and down-to-earth, so it might not be for everyone. It has everything you need - a shower block with adequate facilities and washing up area. The pitches are either located around a central grassy area, where the kids played with the other children. Firepits are allowed - we were lucky enough to meet other lovely people to join around the fire in the evenings. It's quiet and fairly remote from any busy roads, but an easy drive to the nearest supermarket. There are activities available onsite (we loved the via Ferrata and zip-wire), and lots of exploring on footpaths around the campsite, on the coast path and in nearby Falmouth. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the café is superb (almost too good - as the kids were always asking for cooked breakfasts and I kept getting tempted by the great coffees and cakes!)

    Disliked:

The ground is quite stony, but if you're prepared for that (bring a hefty mallet and put pegs in at a shallow angle), it's absolutely fine.
Activities on site were all sold out when we arrived. We were told that next year (2022), a number of places on the activities (kayaking, SUPing, via Ferrata, archery etc) will be reserved for campers.
I would also have been prepared to pay more for the camping, if the activities could have been included in the price.
It would have been great to have a fridge for campers to use.
There are pitches in an open area and a few that are tucked away. It would have been nice to have had the choice of type of pitch when booking (although in the end, the open pitch that we got was far more sociable, and the kids loved it).

From the manager...

Thank you so much for coming and for taking the time to provide feedback - we really appreciate this!

Next year we will have heavy duty pegs available if the ground is an issue.

Going forward we will also give customers the chance to select their type of pitch when booking.

We will provide an Ice block freezer for next year but not a fridge and or milk etc. (the nearest shop is in Longdowns which is a 5 minute drive away).

Thanks again for coming and leaving a review!

Outdoorsy types will find plenty to keep them entertained for days on end around these parts. Along with the sizeable menu of activities on offer at the centre itself, you can reach the coast in 15 minutes or so for walking along the South West Coast Path. Riders can sign up for a hack through the countryside from a stables 10 minutes away, while golfers can tee off within 15 minutes.

Of course, once you’ve got to the coast you may instead just choose to bask on the beach: local faves Gyllyngvase, Swanpool and Maenporth can all be reached with a drive of about 20 minutes.

The harbour town of Falmouth around 20 minutes away is home to the National Maritime Museum, the seafront Pendennis Castle and the gorge Trebah Gardens. You can also hire small boats here to take trips on the River Fal, or join a wildlife-spotting trip to spy dolphins, seals and basking sharks out at sea. For guaranteed seal sightings, head to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek 15 minutes away.

The big family day out in the area is Flambards Theme Park, a 20-minute drive from the site. There are rides and attractions galore here, including rollercoasters, a big wheel, go-karts and a recreation of a Victorian village.
