  • Café on site serving breakfasts, lunches and homemade cakes
In search of a bit of adrenaline-fuelled excitement on your travels? Want it right on your doorstep? It doesn’t come much closer than at Via Ferrata Cornwall in the grounds of a family-friendly outdoor pursuits centre 20 minutes’ drive from Falmouth. Around the 60-acre grounds are loads of activities to get your heart racing, including a via ferrata course (the ultimate high-wire adventure involving scaling cliff faces, balancing across high-wire bridges and flying through the air on a zipwire), watersports (canoeing, kayaking and paddleboarding), coasteering (in the on-site quarry), rock climbing and archery. There’s an extra charge for these activities, but you’re free to roam the adventure nature trails to spot wildlife and learn about the natural world from the information boards as you wander. There are enough facilities to keep you comfortable, including a washing-up area and a toilet block with clean toilets and hot showers. Much of the site’s electricity is provided by a wind turbine and solar panels, so you can have a pretty clear conscience on the eco front. Pick up everything you need at the nearest supermarket, a 10-minute drive away. Alternatively, the on-site café run by The Cornish Barista offers breakfast, brunch, lunch and delicious homemade cakes, with vegan options. Ten per cent of the café sales go towards the site owner’s launching charity BF Adventure, helping Cornwall’s most vulnerable children.

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types will find plenty to keep them entertained for days on end around these parts. Along with the sizeable menu of activities on offer at the centre itself, you can reach the coast in 15 minutes or so for walking along the South West Coast Path. Riders can sign up for a hack through the countryside from a stables 10 minutes away, while golfers can tee off within 15 minutes. Of course, once you’ve got to the coast you may instead just choose to bask on the beach: local faves Gyllyngvase, Swanpool and Maenporth can all be reached with a drive of about 20 minutes. The harbour town of Falmouth around 20 minutes away is home to the National Maritime Museum, the seafront Pendennis Castle and the gorge Trebah Gardens. You can also hire small boats here to take trips on the River Fal, or join a wildlife-spotting trip to spy dolphins, seals and basking sharks out at sea. For guaranteed seal sightings, head to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek 15 minutes away. The big family day out in the area is Flambards Theme Park, a 20-minute drive from the site. There are rides and attractions galore here, including rollercoasters, a big wheel, go-karts and a recreation of a Victorian village.

Primitive grass tent campsite (no pets)

Liked: If you’re looking for a relaxing and thrilling stay, via ferrata is a great place to consider. We stayed for one night and from the moment we arrived, staff were very welcoming and helpful. We got taken to our pitch and was shown where the toilet, washing and shower block facilities were. A very basic layout but very clean.

A star point is the exciting zip lines, high ropes and other activities available via online booking .. which is great for thrill seekers. Not forgetting the prettiest cafe with a lovely view. Loved it, great value for money and would happily come back! Thank you so much for a wonderful stay.

Powered grass tent campsite (pet friendly)

Liked: The space provided for electric pitch is massive, everything you need is available- shower loo kitchen sink

Disliked: Needed a mop for the showers so it’s clean for the next person- staff are doing a great job but campers should be able to help them out by cleaning up their mess

Liked: The staff were extremely friendly and keen to provide excellent service.
The cafe was nice and welcoming.
We did a few activities, in which we found the staff attentive and helpful.
This all made an enjoyable holiday, thank you!

Disliked: Although the staff tried to maintain cleanliness in the shower block, this wasn't successful as people were still using the facilities whilst being cleaned. Might be worth closing for a short period, daily to complete a deep clean.

Primitive grass tent campsite (no pets)

Liked: This campsite was excellent! Small camping areas with a maximum of half a dozen tents on each, plenty of wind-breaks, shade and shelter. Lovely and quiet, no noise from anything but the owls. Toilet and shower facilities were spacious and clean. The campsite staff member who we met was very friendly and helpful. The cafe breakfasts were excellent with a lovely view over the quarry where activities took place. Falmouth is only seventeen minutes away for shopping, and many beaches and attractions are within easy driving distance. We'll definitely come back.
