  • Peaceful and basic wild site within walking distance of the river Fal
  • A five-minute drive from Loe beach, Trelissick Garden and the ferry
  • Rewilding setting with mown paths; communal firepit and solar shower
Wild meadow stays positioned a pretty stroll away from the river Fal? If that’s enough for you to say ‘count me in’, get your fix at Penelewey Meadows. With 20 acres of fields, this basic site has recently started transitioning from agricultural land to a wild meadow. They are aiming to increase their biodiversity by 50% by encouraging the wild meadow and wild flowers, and letting parts of the hedgerows grow out to act as a wildlife corridor. Unwind in the peaceful grass pitches spaced out over a 12-acre field. There are drive-on mown paths so that guests can safely park up on the mown circular spaces. The paths are there so that the wild meadow can grow, so guests must stay within the mown areas; it’s very important for biodiversity. Come evening time, sit beside the fire; firepits are permitted on the pitches as long as they’re raised off the ground. The same goes for barbecues (off-ground only), and blocks are available to use for this exact purpose. If you like your firepits shared, there’s also a communal firepit (bring your own logs, ta). There are some basic facilities on site, including a compost toilet, an outdoor sink with running water and a solar shower which is completely outdoors, aimed as a rinse-off shower after your beach day. Eco biodegradable products are provided; guests must not use their own products, as the water runs straight into the ground to keep the hedgerows watered. Settled in? Then, check out the tour agency based on site which runs walks and tours across Cornwall. There’s a watersports centre by Loe beach, five minutes’ drive away, and the site is directly on National Cycle Network Route 3 from Land's End to Bristol. Foodie? A gorgeous tearoom and the local pub are within five minutes’ walk of the site. There’s also a food shop and a petrol station within five minutes’ drive.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The adventure. Didn't wanted to put any rate at first because it was either 5star considering that factor or not even one if you're expecting a campsite. You have to anyway so 2 is pretty bad and I don't feel good for those guys starting this campsite but I can't do more... sorry for them. Only place I could find to camp near Truro.

Disliked: There's actually the absolute minimum of what a place to camp should offer, but can you call it a campsite tho. I wouldn't pay that money again (which was the most I payed for one night in a week trip camping in Cornwall) for not even having walls to the shower, it was windy and the water was barely falling on me while I was in 😅. And I should've kept a bathing suit on if there was other people. Really too bad because the shack the toilets are in is really good looking and functional. The pitches are just mowed part of a before cultivated field, this is not that much of a con, other places around have such a perfect grass compare to. It was definitely alright to put the tent.

From the manager: Hello We are described on Pitchup as exactly what you have written as dislikes. We are a basic campsite with basic amenities, we purposely put photos of our outdoor rinse off showers so people know before they book what they can expect. Yes we are a previously cultivated field, we are trying to encourage a wild meadow so cutting of our grass is important, and also very important not to do when we've had torrential rain such as what we've had here in Cornwall this past week. I'm sorry you felt that it wasn't for you, we had previously discussed via text the situation with our campsite so I'm unsure what you were expecting when you arrived. The shower is clearly photographed in the description on pitchup. I'm glad you enjoyed the adventure. Thank you Penelewey Meadows

Liked: Lovely spacious basic site. Only one other family staying when we visited. Basic facilities incl compost toilet and outdoor solar shower but clean and almost new.

Disliked: Really needs separate taps for drinking water, washing up and hand washing.

Local attractions

It’s time to make your rounds of Cornwall, and what better spot to begin with than the National Trust's Trelissick Garden (five minutes’ drive) along the Fal estuary? The Roseland Peninsula’s many woods and beaches are accessible from the King Harry Ferry (five minutes) and the ferry from Trelissick also stops at Truro, Falmouth and St Mawes. Roundwood Quay (35 minutes’ walk through fields and an ancient woodland) is a fine spot for wild swimming and also has an Iron Age fort. Feel like a cycle? Begin at the Devoran, Bissoe Trail Car Park (25 minutes’ cycle) and pedal to Portreath, stopping at the Saint Piran Café. To see the cathedral, make your way to Truro (10 minutes’ drive). Falmouth (25 minutes) is also at-hand for sailing. And if you just can’t resist the north coast’s villages and towns, there’s a good selection between Porthtowan (20 minutes), Perranporth (half an hour) and Newquay (40 minutes).
