  • Peaceful site within walking distance of the river Fal
  • A five-minute drive from Loe beach, Trelissick Garden and the ferry
  • Rewilding setting with mown paths; communal firepit and solar shower
A getaway in a wild meadow positioned a pretty stroll away from the river Fal? If that’s enough for you to say ‘count me in’, get your fix at Penelewey Meadows. With 20 acres of fields, this peaceful site has recently started transitioning from agricultural land to a wild meadow. They are aiming to increase their biodiversity by 50% by encouraging the wild meadow and wild flowers, and letting parts of the hedgerows grow out to act as a wildlife corridor. Check out the tour agency based on site which runs walks and tours across Cornwall. There’s a watersports centre by Loe beach, five minutes’ drive away, and the site is directly on National Cycle Network Route 3 from Land's End to Bristol. Foodie? A gorgeous tearoom and the local pub are within five minutes’ walk of the site. There’s also a food shop and a petrol station within five minutes’ drive. Come evening time, sit beside the fire; firepits are permitted as long as they’re raised off the ground. The same goes for barbecues, for which blocks are provided to help you keep them off the ground. If you like your firepits shared, there’s also a communal firepit (bring your own logs, ta). Facilities on site consist of a composting toilet, an outdoor sink with running water and an outdoor solar shower for a quick rinse-off shower after a day at the beach. Eco biodegradable products are provided; guests must not use their own products, as the water runs straight into the ground to keep the hedgerows watered. There are drive-on mown paths so that guests can safely park up on mown circular spaces. The paths are there so that the wild meadow can grow, so guests must stay within the mown areas; it’s very important for biodiversity.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Great site. Very quiet, simple site. Compost loo and sink very clean and all we needed on a site. Love the whole setup and ethos of this site.

Disliked: Not a dislike but didn't brave the shower! Also, could do with better signage if arriving from the King Harry Ferry as we drove past the first time!

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Huge spaces, total peace, clean facilities, beautiful walks, near the pub. All perfect.

Disliked: Nothing....oh well I guess a plug in the sink that actually works so you can fill the sink up to wash up would be useful.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Very secluded and back to nature campsite. Composting toilet and outdoor shower that apparently got when it’s sunny (wasn’t when I visited). However, the description that Becky posted makes all this clear, so don’t book expecting a holiday camp. Close to a very nice pub and beautiful views. Becky was a fantastic host and very friendly and helpful.

Disliked: A warm shower would have been nice after a days cycling

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Such an incredible campsite, back to basics to savour the surroundings and camp properly! The local pub is just a short stroll away with fabulous food, Loe beach is a very short driven ideal spot for a sea swim after a day exploring. Being dog friendly, this place is a superb holiday for all the family including our 6 and 10 year old children who cant wait to go back. The owners are creating such a wonderful site, really looking forward to seeing it evolve. Thankyou so much, can't wait to return!

Liked: The amazing views and the crystal clear night sky. And the peaceful atmosphere and the communal vibe especially with the communal fire circle.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: The meadow was exactly as described. Basic facilities with washing up sink, solar outdoor shower and compostable toilet which worked so well. Rebecca was very helpful and went the extra mile when we were out and it was windy and our tent blew over, she made it upright again and put in some more tent pegs for us so it was secure when we got back. That was so much appreciated. I also love the future plans to continue rewilding the meadow as it is being used for a campsite.

Disliked: Nothing.

From the manager: Liked: Setting up the tent The service provided by the owner for additional coverage Disliked: No reception or visit during the stay Shower in screen The toilets offered but too narrow The field too big where we feel lost I'd first like to say thank you for your review, we like to take on people's comments so we can learn and grow over the coming years. However, what we really appreciate is honest reviews. The first time one of the owners visited you was to ask you not to enter the tent you were not staying in and using up all the battery so that our guests that were arriving later that day would still have some charge left. We then visited later that day but you were out and again in the evening when we clean our facilities you were also out enjoying your holiday. I think you maybe didn't read or look at any pictures on pitchup because all of facilities are clearly stated so that everyone knows that we are a nearly wild camp site. It also clearly stated we have no reception and are a hands free camp site. The shower is something we will take on board, next year we are having a compost heated shower with an indoor shower, it'll still be in keeping with our Wild ethos but a little more privacy. Your last comment about the field being too big, I'm sorry, this is something we simply can't work out, the idea of Penelewey Meadows is peace, space and nature, I think maybe you wanted a busier camp site with better facilities but for our price.

Liked: Very quite, we weren't bothered by anyone. The compost toilet was exceptionally clean. There's plenty of toilet roll in there too. There's a little sink next to it with hand wash and washing up liquid. The scenery is lovely. We had our bbq going till late. It was a great night! We're definitely going back. 😁

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Relaxed campsite with a friendly host. There was a lot of space between pitches, which were flat, and the composting toilet was easy to use. Good instructions for using the shower and solar lights around the campsite were helpful. Close to Truro. Great walks straight from the campsite. A pub a short walk away. We were able to borrow blocks so I could have a BBQ. Dog friendly.

Disliked: Fine for me but be aware you may not get warm/hot shower water if it isn't sunny.

Local attractions

It’s time to make your rounds of Cornwall, and what better spot to begin with than the National Trust's Trelissick Garden (five minutes’ drive) along the Fal estuary? The Roseland Peninsula’s many woods and beaches are accessible from the King Harry Ferry (five minutes) and the ferry from Trelissick also stops at Truro, Falmouth and St Mawes. Roundwood Quay (35 minutes’ walk through fields and an ancient woodland) is a fine spot for wild swimming and also has an Iron Age fort. Feel like a cycle? Begin at the Devoran, Bissoe Trail Car Park (25 minutes’ cycle) and pedal to Portreath, stopping at the Saint Piran Café. To see the cathedral, make your way to Truro (10 minutes’ drive). Falmouth (25 minutes) is also at-hand for sailing. And if you just can’t resist the north coast’s villages and towns, there’s a good selection between Porthtowan (20 minutes), Perranporth (half an hour) and Newquay (40 minutes).
