Cornish Tipi Holidays: Morning view from the tipi

General

  • Peaceful site on the north Cornish coast
  • Five minutes' drive from the nearest beach
  • On-site lake for swimming, boating, and trout fishing

There is, perhaps, nothing better than landing your own trout on a campsite fishing lake... and then landing it in a pan over a campfire for dinner. Unless it’s waking up to the sounds of birds twittering and then – with luck – the sizzling sound of a bacon and egg breakfast being cooked by a considerate beloved and carried lovingly into your tipi?

If you have a beloved who seems allergic to frying pans, you might think your chances of having breakfast cooked for you on holiday are approximately nil. But the romantic feel of this place might be catching: there’s been at least one proposal a year at Cornish Tipi Holidays near Polzeath on the north Cornish coast since it opened in 1997...

This site's always a huge hit with families and kids, but grandparents, loved-up couples, honeymooners, weekend breakers, artists, surfers and painters, and all sorts of Cornish holidaymakers have bedded down in the woodland valley at Cornish Tipi Holidays over the years, so you should toddle along to it to see why it all works so well.

Cornish Tipi Holidays is owned by Elizabeth, whose family has worked the farmland and quarries around this area for 11 generations, and she’ll be happy to give advice, info and directions to wherever tickles your Cornish fancy. So come one, come all – just be sure to remember the lemon, black pepper and, possibly, the champagne...?

Please note

Entertainment and activities are available between 08/04 and 01/10.

The site is a glorious outdoor wedding venue and in the busy summer wedding season there may well be a wedding or two during your stay. Campers are usually a long way from the festivities but it's a good thing to be aware of when booking your trip.

Absolutely beautiful place to stay 🥰😍 we very much loved our visit and wish we could of stayed longer, very much worth visiting, even going out of our way just to stay and enjoy the great natural lake ( even though I lost my phone in the lake 🤦 I couldn't of chosen a more tranquil and beautiful location to be it's last resting place lol) but seriously so worth a visit and the free boats/canoes to use were a great touch and to be woken by the animals was so refreshing ( lots of spectacular wild and happy friends 🐰🦔🐓🐔 even some peacocks ❣️)

A big thank you for the lovely review and we're so sorry you lost your phone in the lake...but great you enjoyed the wildlife and encountered our beautiful peacocks in all their glory! We'll look forward to seeing you again :)

The site is amazing, safe to walk around, clean and has a magical feel.
The lake was so much fun and not having to book or pay more for the boats was great.
Dinner at the Gastropod cafe was also incredible, and again a perfect setting.
I have nothing bad to say. This is our second time at the site.
Toilets and showers are clean and well positioned.

    Disliked:

    Nothing, honestly

From the manager...

We so appreciate your testimonial telling everyone about the great time your family has had on a repeat visit. We'll let the Gastropod team know how much you enjoyed their food too and thank you so much for the brilliant 10 out of 10!

    Disliked:

Not much space for the tent and not too much option of where to put the tent ,too loud, drunk people were shouting until 2am.

From the manager...

Thanks for all the good things you've got to say about our campsite, the staff, the cafe etc. We're sorry if you had badly behaved neighbours who disturbed you - we're aware there was a family that were inappropriately loud at some point over the Jubilee weekend and can assure you they will not be coming back!

We had an amazing week at Tipi over and think it was one of the best we have stayed at. We visited the lake every day to swim and kayak which was such brilliant, the site was beautiful with good facilities, the compost toilets are an experience but there are alternatives and the showers were always hot and the Gastropod cafe had some tasty food and can recommend the breakfasts.
As we were there during the jubilee celebrations there were 4 weddings over the 7 days but we just saw it as added entertainment and put in ear plugs if we went to bed earlier but just something to be aware of.
Overall we cannot recommend the campsite enough and have already rebooked for the August bank holiday, cannot wait !!!

    Disliked:

From the manager...

Thank you so much for the fantastic 10 out of 10 review and we are just delighted that you're coming back to us later this summer! Great that you enjoyed everything so much at the Gastropod Cafe (we'll pass on your kind comments to their team) and had such fun over the Jubilee holiday even with extra weddings going on! Looking forward to seeing you again in August!

Loved how you have the option of secluded spots for the tent pitches. The showers were clean and warm. The quarry which is exclusive to the site, proper tucked away makes for hours of fun. It is more expensive than your average camp site, but this is no average camp site, and it offered just want we needed and love in a campsite. Thank you :)

Local attractions

Cornish Tipi Holidays is five minutes’ drive from the nearest swimming beach, Port Gaverne, and from the fishing village of Port Isaac which Doc Martin fans will doubtless recognise from the gogglebox.

From Port Gaverne, wander the half mile west to Port Isaac to wander among its narrow streets and have a happy morning sourcing the freshest mackerel, crabs and scallops to buy. Or stay above the town to keep on hiking along the clifftop, south to Polzeath and Rock or north to Boscastle and Tintagel ten and 12 miles along the coast from your pitch.

Going watersporting? Course you are, you’re in Cornwall. If you’re on holiday with the kids, both the beach at Port Gaverne and the one at Daymer Bay about 15 minutes’ drive away are particularly suitable for smaller swimmers; the lack of surf at Daymer means it’s one of the best and safest places in Cornwall to learn windsurfing too.

If you do want to surf or learn how to – course you do, you’re in Cornwall – bring your board or the means to hire one to Polzeath about six miles from base, or a bit further down the coast to Newquay.

Must see

  • Tintagel Castle (6.1 miles)
  • Rock Beach (7.2 miles)
  • Cornwall's Crealy Great Adventure Park (9.4 miles)

  • Tintagel Old Post Office (5.7 miles)
