General

  • Romantic site on the north Cornish coast
  • Five minutes' drive from the nearest beach
  • On-site lake for swimming and trout fishing

There is, perhaps, nothing better than landing your own trout on a campsite fishing lake and then landing it in a pan over a campfire for dinner. Unless it’s waking up to the sounds of birds twittering and then – with luck – the sizzling sound of a bacon and egg breakfast being cooked by a considerate beloved and carried lovingly into your tipi?

If you have a beloved who seems allergic to frying pans, you might think your chances of having breakfast cooked for you on holiday are approximately nil. But we think the romantic feel of this place might be catching: there’s been at least one proposal a year at Cornish Tipi Holidays near Polzeath on the north Cornish coast since it opened in 1997...

This site is always a huge hit with families and kids, but grandparents, loved-up couples, honeymooners, weekend breakers, artists, surfers, painters and all sorts of Cornish holidaymakers have bedded down in the woodland valley at Cornish Tipi Holidays over the years, so you should toddle along to it to see why it all works so well.

Cornish Tipi Holidays is owned by local couple Elizabeth and Alan whose families have worked the farmland and quarries around this area for 11 generations, and they’ll be happy to give advice, info and directions to wherever tickles your Cornish fancy. So come one, come all – just be sure to remember the lemon, black pepper and, possibly, the champagne...?

Please note

Single-sex bookings of 20 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 17/04 and 01/10 (subject to weather conditions).

The site is a glorious outdoor wedding venue and in the busy summer wedding season there may well be a wedding or two during your stay. Campers are usually a long way from the festivities but it's a good thing to be aware of when booking your trip.

Great wild/back to basics campsite. Amazing starry nights 31/08/2017

We loved the back to nature feel of the campsite and the fact that you can catch your own trout down at the stunning lake for cooking later. We caught about 7 but only kept two for our tea :) There were plenty of people swimming in the lake and there are boats, canoes and kayaks for you to use too.

There is a fantastic little cafe on site that has the best granary bread for a bacon sandwich! We ate there twice!! Super friendly staff too.
Well looked after grounds, campfires allowed and they have wood you can buy. There is minimal site lighting to a head torch/torch is a must, but its great that you get to see the beautiful stars at night

If you love wild/back to basics camping then this is the site for you. They have tipi's that you can hire too which look pretty cool.
There was a wedding at the campsite while we were there which meant the site had lots of pretty decorations and we had live music Saturday night which we loved.

Its close to some great Ports and Polzeath beach isn't far away either. While you are in the area you must visit Haywood Cider Farm, lovely lovely cider :)
Cornish Arms is also a 4min drive and is a really nice little country pub.

    Disliked:

The field we stayed in had no amenities other than a fresh water tap. Washing up/WC/Showers closer to this field would have been better. Oh and no bins in or near our field either - closest was the WC block.

The walk to the showers was quite far really and for there to be only three of them i'm glad we timed it right each time and didn't have to wait or walk all the way back to our pitch.

The walk to the toilets wasn't as bad but if you have a chemical toilet its worth taking so that you don't have to trek over to the toilets in the night.

Wonderful setting, amazing lake to swim in and boats to use. Loved the open fire to cook on.

    Disliked:

We hadn't expected the tipi to be mouldy and damp. It smelled damp inside and the mats on the floor were damp so not the cosy and dry experience we'd hoped for. We also had very noisy and inconsiderate neighbours the first night.

    Disliked:

The walk to the showers - too far from the toilets
Location of site is too far from any local towns

From the manager...

The walk to the showers is exactly 3 mins from the top meadow & the loos are just over the footbridge - some 90 seconds.
Its certainly longer than when you're at home but its not too bad really!
The campsite is just inland from beautiful Port Isaac - 5 mins by car to be precise - also the same distance from stunning Port Gaverne, our nearest swimming beach.
We are not near any towns - unless you count the small town of Wadebridge - some 5 miles away. We think its one of the joys of living near the coast but in the heart of the countryside - far from the urban sprawl.
Newquay is about 30 minutes away for those that want more of a town atmosphere - there's lots of campsites in & around the town - all with full electricity, concrete, club house bar & security guards after dark - some even in the daytime.
That's a different vibe - & not the one we aim for!

    Disliked:

Very noisy wedding when we were there. Toilets pretty filthy.

From the manager...

So pleased you enjoyed the lake & that you plan to visit again!
We think we know which wedding you mean & can only say how sorry we are that some of the wedding guests (& apparently some other unrelated Bank Holiday campers) took advantage of the fine night & the relaxed atmosphere of our site to continue carousing far later than they should.
Unfortunately not everyone behaves all of the time but it is our responsibility to try & ensure that any of our campers do not bother any others & we are going to be tougher all round with people next season.
The loos also suffered from this particular evening - more of those coming next year!
With thanks for your feedback.

    Waterpoint on pitch

    Disliked:

Paying an excessive amount of money for wild camping

    - hedgerows not maintained - being stung by nettles while trying to put the tent up.
    - pitches not maintained - having to dig up all the stones before putting the tent up so you are not having to sleep on rocks.
    - secluded pitch is the closest I have ever been to a neighbouring tent, with the thinnest bamboo fence as the only partitioning.
    - Not being able to park the car near the pitch and having to do multiple trips from the car to the pitch in a wheel barrow on a steep muddy slope.
    - The nearest toilet being a compost toilet.
    - A 5 minute walk to the nearest flushing toilet (a shed with four toilets installed, no lights, mud and tissue all over the floor, full of insects)
    -nowhere to dispose of rubbish
    - no electricity provided
    -no washing machine and laundrette.

From the manager...

Oh dear! Perhaps an off Grid campsite which includes a 3 minute walk (sorry, but it is not 5 mins for any standard adult) to the nearest flushing loo block (x5 cubicles, not x4) or 90 seconds to the nearest double composting unit was not for you. In fact we know it was not for you as we have had extensive communications with you since you left our site, when you complained we had not allowed for your medical condition which of course you never mentioned when you booked your pitch back in June.
So no, with no power for campers it would not be possible to have a launderette - this is why we call it 'wild camping' - it is not intended to be a holiday park like most others & we make no apology for that.
We have plenty of places to dispose of rubbish & most people find wheeling their kit in a barrow for a couple of minutes fun rather than a problem. Not everywhere is accessible to a car - that's half the point.
If you didn't fancy that there are pitches where you can take you car right next to your tent - but you never said that that is what you wanted.
You also fail to mention the large refund that you managed to obtain - mostly due to a clear threat to otherwise rubbish us online for not catering to your unknown medical condition.
So you've taken the money & are now turning up online - not mentioning any of this of course.
We have a small black list of our own - & you are firmly on it.

Pricy but good experience to have 25/08/2017

  • Liked:

Loved the tipi tent experience. It kind of takes you into wilderness. No electricity nothing. Natural lake is a bonus. Kids loved the whole experience.

    Disliked:

Paying premium price for the tipi tent experience comes with noisy disturbances through out the night. Tents are located close to washing up place for the whole pitch and you get disturbed even past midnight with people talking out loud washing their dishes. Parking can be an issue and staff can be of mixed opinions at times but overall its worth the experience.

Offers so much more than just a camp site! The children loved the free roaming chickens, adored the lake and had fun in the boats, adults loved being close to nature and enjoying the beauty of the woodland. The staff were friendly and helpful, the facilities were adequate and clean, the decorations were a lovely touch, lots there to praise!

    Disliked:

Unfortunately, our pitch was very muddy, perhaps something could have been done to prevent that? 🙁 it made it difficult to keep the tent clean as took away from the enjoyment. Also, due to the pitch being very rocky, it was hard to peg the tent properly.

Directions

Take the M5 to Exeter then the A30 to Okehampton and Launceston. Turn right onto the A395 to Camelford and just before Camelford, turn right at Collan's Cross onto the B3314 to Delabole. Follow the road out of Delabole for a couple miles then turn left for St Teath at the Port Gaverne crossroads (do not take the first road on the left signposted St Teath just after Delabole).

Stay on that road (again do not turn left to St Teath), curving around to the right over and old railway bridge, then take the first right just before Nomansland Cottage, and down the grassy track.

Local attractions

Cornish Tipi Holidays is five minutes’ drive from the nearest swimming beach, Port Gaverne, and from the fishing village of Port Isaac which Doc Martin fans will doubtless recognise from the gogglebox.

If you’re seeking seclusion, go to the sheltered inlet of the former for serene swimming and rockpooling, before a (slightly less secluded) pint of Doom Bar among the low beams and old photos of seventeenth century Port Gaverne Inn.

From Port Gaverne, wander the half mile west to Port Isaac to wander among its narrow streets and have a happy morning sourcing the freshest mackerel, crabs and scallops to buy. Or stay above the town to keep on hiking along the clifftop, south to Polzeath and Rock or north to Boscastle and Tintagel ten and 12 miles along the coast from your pitch.

Many many miles of hikes of all levels are all around from the campsite, along the north Cornish coast or inland over Bodmin Moor about 15 minutes’ drive from Cornish Tipi Holidays. The South West Coast Path runs for 630 miles along the Cornwall and Devon coastlines, but you might manage most of the nearby Saints Way, 27 miles from Padstow to Fowey in one long day. The Camel Trail, 17 miles of inland walks and cycle rides including plenty easy for families, is seven miles from base starting at the town of Wadebridge.

Going watersporting? Course you are, you’re in Cornwall... If you’re on holiday with the kids, both the beach at Port Gaverne and the one at Daymer Bay about 15 minutes’ drive away are particularly suitable for smaller swimmers; the lack of surf at Daymer means it’s one of the best and safest places in Cornwall to learn windsurfing.

If you do want to surf or learn how to – course you do, you’re in Cornwall – bring your board or the means to hire one to Polzeath about six miles from camp, or a bit further down the coast to Newquay.

The closest sea kayaking is around the cliffs’ feet at Port Quin, the tiny hamlet between Polzeath and Port Isaac. Or (a very good option if you’re in Cornwall to be romantic) book a return on the late water taxi from Rock after a gazing-into-eyes dinner at Rick Stein’s seafood restaurant in Padstow.

All this and golf too: the two local golf courses, St Kew and St Enodoc, are three and five miles away respectively from the site.

Must see

  • Rock Beach (7.2 miles)
