General

  • Near Kennack Sands on the Lizard Peninsula
  • Campfires allowed: kindling and logs for sale
  • Bar with carvery, all you can eat deals, beer garden and bouncy castle

'I’m free, to do what I want, any old time...' Free spirits will enjoy Namparra Campsite, near Kennack Sands on Cornwall’s Lizard Peninsula: visitors are at liberty to light their own campfire and can pick their perfect spot within the lush six-acre camping meadow to get the best of the gorgeous sea views. Fellow residents include a handful of friendly goats and a pondful of ducks and moorhens.

With the Cow Shed Bar just a short stroll away, guests can also freely sample the local cider and scrummy homemade cocktails over a game of pool, without any arguments about who is designated driver.

The Shed serves all you can eat breakfasts every day during school holidays, all you can eat curry once a week and a carvery on Sundays. It also has regular entertainment and the beer garden has been extended to house the free bouncy castle assault course for the kids to bounce around at.

Wooden cabins house the showers and loos, and there’s a sheltered washing-up area and a small laundry room. You can get kindling and logs for your campfire on site, or dig your own firepit.

Toilets & showers, we used them once, then held it in and went elsewhere.
General unloved feel, rubbish, dirty old caravans, old vehicles dumped around.
    A bit 'League of Gentleman'.

We booked for six days left after two days. I have camped & backpacked for over 50yrs but this is the first time I have ever left a campsite early or left a poor review.. When we arrived I was given a leaflet with various local amenities and the camp rules, one thing that stood out was that it said 'absolutely no refunds', obviously a common request.

Well-located site let down by terrible facilities and uncaring owners. 22/08/2018

We stayed here for a week this August as a base to explore the Lizard and this part of Cornwall. The site is in a fantastic location with good access to beaches and local attractions. Although the site is not especially picturesque it is very green and feels close to nature with plenty of bats flying around in the evening and owls hooting through the night. The children enjoyed the trampoline in the main field where all the children on the campsite gathered and made friends. The goats and pigs in the next field were a bonus and there is plenty of space for children to run around without needing close supervision. We enjoyed the old school feel of the site with being able to pitch where we wanted, no lights at night and proper campfires (no firepits required) although it would have been preferable if there were more flat pitches to choose from.
The site is also very cheap but we would have been happy to pay a little extra for a site which didn't have quite so many serious drawbacks (see below).

    Disliked:

We enjoy camping on a basic campsite but basic doesn't have to mean dirty and the site is really badly let down by the toilet and washing facilities which are the worst I have seen on any campsite in 40 years of camping. There are four "wet rooms" which are large sheds containing shower, toilet and sink. Throughout our stay these were continually filthy, smelly and in poor repair despite the owner telling us that they were cleaned many times a day. On the one or two occasions we saw cleaning taking place there did not appear to be any cleaning products used so although they looked slightly cleaner afterwards they still smelt strongly of urine and were obviously not hygienically clean.
As well as the poor servicing the number of toilets was inadequate for the number of people staying on the site so we often had to queue to use the facilities. For the first three days of our stay the showers were all cold (not much fun in the rain), subsequently this was fixed but then all the lights in the showers stopped working so we then had to brave the damp and filthy sheds in the dark with only torches to guide us.
Not only were the facilities themselves inadequate they drained directly into the stream that runs down one side of the camping field behind where we pitched our tent so we had to live with the strong smell of drains that this produced.
As well as the poor washing and drainage facilities we also had concerns about the safety of the play areas (e.g. decrepit plastic equipment, insufficient hollowing out of the ground below the in-ground trampoline, a large uncovered, unfenced and unattended swimming pool); rubbish on the site (rotting fruit left for days by the children's play area); excessive noise at night from the caravan park next door and other campers; the hygiene in the on site pub which stank of wet dog and cigarettes; and the generally unhelpful and unfriendly attitude of the staff from the start of our visit and every time we dealt with them.

    Disliked:

Site very scruffy site, we left very early but I wouldn’t have used the shower anyway. No convenient rubbish bins so assume that’s way neighbouring tent had left food scraps in hedge which soon attracted rats & seagulls. Such a shame could be a fantastic site. Cow shed was not what we were expecting so went to have fish & chips in Lands end

The Lizard is a lovely spot and we enjoyed having a proper campfire each night and looking at the stars (there was a meteorite shower while we were there – fab!).

    Disliked:

As soon as we drove on to the site I knew it was a mistake. It looked run down and was littered with broken down caravans and overflowing bins. The Cowshed bar appeared filthy and crammed with junk – we avoided it like the plague. The camping field was pretty and and tree-lined, although there were few level spots. The advertised access to the beach involved clambering over deep ditches – not great for little ones. We expected basic facilities (toilets, showers, somewhere to wash up our dishes) but did not realise that basic would translate into poorly maintained and run-down, rarely cleaned and inadequate for the number of campers allowed on site (four small sheds, each with a shower and toilet shoved in for a field full of people). Next door was a huge and loud site (although I imagine they had nicer facilities). Namparra is cheap, but certainly not cheerful! We picked it because it was on a Time Out list of 10 of the best campsites in Cornwall but this was six years ago. The owners seem nice enough so it's such a shame that the site has been let go. Avoid.

Breakfast from 10am? {no one on earth wakes up at ten while camping} childrens play area, dreadful, not enough facilities, and not being told not to pitch in bottom corner as its used as a short cut to the beach and pub.( got disturbed every half hour so should have been told to avoid it.

Local attractions

About 20 minutes’ walk from Namparra Campsite you’ll find Kennack Sands, a fantastic family beach with a great café; a similar walk in the other direction takes you through a picturesque valley to Poltesco, a hidden cove with a pebbly beach and the photogenic ruins of an old serpentine works, and the Lizard Point with its iconic lighthouse.

This part of Cornwall is peppered with enchanting fishing villages, including nearby Cadgwith: if you’re lucky enough to be here on a Friday night (known in these parts as Saint Inebriatus’ Eve!), you can join the renowned Cadgwith Singers for a singalong of sea shanties in the local pub.

There are loads of good days out for the family, too: the seal sanctuary at Gweek; Cornish Camels for tractor rides, a giant sandpit and lots of animals, including, of course, camels; the Flambards Experience theme park; and the Poldark Mine, for a glimpse into the life of a tin miner and a wide range of fun activities including gold panning, candle dipping and pottery throwing.
