Chy Carne Holiday Park: Kennack Field

General

  • Relaxed family park 10 minutes' walk from Kennack Sands
  • Licensed shop, pizza takeaway, fire baskets and chimeneas on site
  • Three amenities blocks with well-kept toilets and hot showers

If your holiday checklist includes gorgeous Cornish sea views, quick access to golden beaches and so much to do for mini campers that you can fine the kids if anyone dares utter the phrase ‘I’m bored’, seasidey Chy Carne Holiday Park should tick all boxes for your break.

This is a relaxed, spacious and spankingly clean site with a strong family focus, dog-friendly and close to acclaimed beaches like Kennack Sands (10 minutes' walk) as well as many of the main attractions and towns of Cornwall. Helston, Falmouth and St Austell are all within easy reach, and spectacular Kynance Cove is five minutes' drive away.

The kids can go 'Aaaarrr' and clamber around the play pirate ship, get competitive at the outdoor games or kick a ball around the grassy open space, while the bigger folk can sit back and prepare the barbecue, have a campfire on one of the Chy Carne chimeneas or fire baskets, or sit back with a nosh or a sip from the licensed shop (opening times and stock limited out of season).

There’s a pizza takeaway on site too if you can’t be bothered cooking (open until 11pm in peak season), so you can polish off a pepperoni before moseying along to sit with a real ale or local cider in the summer marquee bar: with its lighting, seating and cosy atmosphere you may decide to linger for a while…

The first-class facilities here have plenty of hot showers (extra charge applies), toilets, washbasins and washing-up sinks (four, to be exact) so queues are unlikely even in peak season, and as the three amenity blocks are in different areas of the park there’ll be no need for long hikes to the toilet at night. There’s a launderette on site too with two commercial washing machines and two driers.

Chy Carne welcomes well-behaved pets.

AA 4 pennants

Please note

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

A cable measuring at least 15 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Group bookings, single-sex groups and under 18s accepted. For static bookings by under 18s, a parent must book the caravan and provide emergency contact details. No loud parties are permitted.

A charge of 50p for 5 minutes with 10p for extra minutes applies for the use of the shower.

From the manager...

Thank you for your recent visit.

At Chycarne we have well in excess of 70 level pitches and the remaining are on a gentle slope. Nothing too difficult to level in a camper van or tourer.

Chycarne benefits from being within a stunning location and near the award winning Kennack Sands beach and Kynance cove as well as other great locations to visit depending what you want to do but Chycarne remains a relaxed peaceful campsite.

1970's style campsite, no level pitches, appalling facilities. Packed in far too close (surely not leagle). Stinking cesspit near our pitch and water supply. Never again would come back here! I could go on.

From the manager...

We appreciate your feedback

Not sure really what a 1970's vintage campsite looks like but I bet it looks great but under the current ownership nothing remains as to the old original park and every think as been replaced and modernised under the current owners tenure, as for investment we continue to invest year on year at great expense. As for prices well there are many factors that make the price what it is and without the charges for what they are then we would really have nothing left for investment after the operating costs are taken out such as 20%VAT.

As for the few stones placed on the pitch can not really
see why this would be a major issue but I guess its just some think else to complain about if thats the way in which you think but these can easily be removed

Chycarne have 5 separate camping areas and well in excess of 50% of the pitches are level and the remaining are situated on a gentle slope. All pitches at Chycarne are a minimum of 10m x 8m and all have EHU.
As for the cesspit you are making comment on, is in fact a fire water point. I can see that some thoughtful campers have disposed of their BBQ in the water butt, "sensible really" but that can be cleaned up but this water point is no where near your pitch, in fact its located next to the fire ring situated at the bottom of the Kennack camping field. I guess its just another thing that you did not like

As for you not returning well thats disappointing

Almost every single thing! … The cleanliness of the site, friendly staff, good facilities, beautiful location, family friendly, very quiet at night. Just a brilliant site.

    Disliked:

The water pressure in the showers isn’t great and the water shoots out in all directions from the spout, making it difficult for children and shorter people to get washed without getting a face full of water everywhere

From the manager...

Thank you for your recent visit and are delighted that you enjoyed your stay.

The water pressure is not normally an issue as we have our own pumping station. What can happen is the shower heads can become slightly scaled and this is both why the pressure can drop and the water shoots in all directions as you put it. The showers are descaled monthly.

Local attractions

The clean, safe and award-winning Kennack Sands (with lifeguards on duty during the summer months) is a 10-minute walk from Chy Carne, and has shops and cafés as well as a dog-friendly stretch on one side: hum the theme from Jaws as you spot a basking shark, or clamber up the coastal path for scenic walks in both directions.

A short drive away is Kynance Cove, which is one of the most photographed spots in Cornwall: fool folk that you’re in the Med by snapping a pic here or at postcard-perfect Mullion Cove on a sunny day.

The Site of Special Scientific Interest Goonhilly Downs is on the doorstep, best known for its Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station, once the biggest in the world and still with satellite dishes that can be seen for miles: the building of a new space science centre on the site was announced in 2011.

Let the kids loose too at the Lizard Point Lighthouse, the last manned lighthouse before automation and now with a heritage centre with exhibits, displays and some of the original engines, or take them to drool over the dromedaries at Cornish Camels.

As it’s Cornwall, holidaymakers of an amphibious disposition will be in heaven with top sailing, surfing, scuba diving and other watersports along this stretch of Cornish coast, and several surf and scuba schools in the area for both newbies and water experts. Landlubbers will find plenty to do too: horse riding, bird (and shark) spotting, golf, fishing, clay pigeon shooting and more are all within reach.

Day trips include squawking at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary at Gweek, flying at the thrill rides of The Flambards Experience and Crealy Great Adventure Park, or browsing around the towns of Falmouth, St Ives, Penzance and Truro for seafood, shopping, more beautiful beaches and a boat ride to the ancient harbour at Marizion’s St Michael’s Mount.

Finally, round off your trip with an afternoon or evening at Penzance’s clifftop open-air Minack Theatre – squint a little bit at the amphitheatre and you could almost imagine you’re in Roman Britain…
