Kennack Field

General

  • Relaxed family park 10 minutes' walk from Kennack Sands
  • Licensed shop, pizza takeaway, fire baskets and chimeneas on site
  • Three amenities blocks with well-kept toilets and hot showers

If your holiday checklist includes gorgeous Cornish sea views, quick access to golden beaches and so much to do for mini campers that you can fine the kids if anyone dares utter the phrase ‘I’m bored’, seasidey Chy Carne Holiday Park should tick all boxes for your break.

This is a relaxed, spacious and spankingly clean site with a strong family focus, dog-friendly and close to acclaimed beaches like Kennack Sands (10 minutes' walk) as well as many of the main attractions and towns of Cornwall. Helston, Falmouth and St Austell are all within easy reach, and spectacular Kynance Cove is five minutes' drive away.

The kids can go 'Aaaarrr' and clamber around the play pirate ship, get competitive at the outdoor games or kick a ball around the grassy open space, while the bigger folk can sit back and prepare the barbecue, have a campfire on one of the Chy Carne chimeneas or fire baskets, or sit back with a nosh or a sip from the licensed shop (opening times and stock limited out of season).

There’s a pizza takeaway on site too if you can’t be bothered cooking (open until 11pm in peak season), so you can polish off a pepperoni before moseying along to sit with a real ale or local cider in the summer marquee bar: with its lighting, seating and cosy atmosphere you may decide to linger for a while…

The first-class facilities here have plenty of hot showers, toilets, washbasins and washing-up sinks (four, to be exact) so queues are unlikely even in peak season, and as the three amenity blocks are in different areas of the park there’ll be no need for long hikes to the toilet at night. There’s a launderette on site too with two commercial washing machines and two driers.

Chy Carne welcomes well-behaved pets.

The views were amazing! Size of pitches was good and lots of picnic benches available which was great. The owner was friendly. Clean site

    Disliked:

Don't go out of season as everything was closed and locked up. The grass needing cutting as was long and so really wet in the mornings. There was no recycling on site. The showers very not hot. I very much felt like we were out of season. All the shower blocks were closed except one, as were a lot of the bins. Reception never seemed open and was messy and low on stock.

From the manager...

Thank you for your recent visit

As to not come out of season is a choice that you need to consider when selecting your self catering camping holiday
We clearly advertise that the bar, catering, shop will be closed from the 1st September

Visitors like to come at this time of year as its a lot quieter and very peaceful.
The main shower block is open as you indicate and this is suffice for the visitor numbers visiting.
The grass is being cut in the main camping areas however we choose to let the grass recover in other areas.
I am afraid this is very little we can do with the morning dew
Located on site are 3 large recycling bins and bins are locked down as we do not require 35 bins.
Reception as explained to you on arrival is available by request
and yes out of season is very low on stock.

View was lovely, great location to explore this side of the beautiful coast. Nice walk down to the local beach (1/2 hr walk). Dog friendly beach which was great for us! Also camp site was really dog friendly, poo bins dotted about and lots of other dogs around. We didn’t use the shop however it looked like it stocked some useful bits. Really friendly welcome from Andrea (I think that was her name?) she talked me through everything and give me a map. This really started our stay off well.

    Disliked:

Loud music from festival blasting out until gone 11pm from the next field along for half of our stay. As it was coming to end of season the 2 shower and toilet blocks near the bottom were closed halfway through our stay, which meant that everyone pitched up near the top shower block and so we were all crammed in which meant our view of the sea was taken. Toilet and shower block was nothing spectacular however they did the job. 50p for shower is fine until your only 50p you have left doesn’t work in the machine so you are left wondering what to do after you have got undressed. Only thing to do is to shout for help! And hope someone hears you.. also were were allocated a pitch but we would have preferred to choose our own seeing as the entire bottom field was pretty much empty!

Local attractions

The clean, safe and award-winning Kennack Sands (with lifeguards on duty during the summer months) is a 10-minute walk from Chy Carne, and has shops and cafés as well as a dog-friendly stretch on one side: hum the theme from Jaws as you spot a basking shark, or clamber up the coastal path for scenic walks in both directions.

A short drive away is Kynance Cove, which is one of the most photographed spots in Cornwall: fool folk that you’re in the Med by snapping a pic here or at postcard-perfect Mullion Cove on a sunny day.

The Site of Special Scientific Interest Goonhilly Downs is on the doorstep, best known for its Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station, once the biggest in the world and still with satellite dishes that can be seen for miles: the building of a new space science centre on the site was announced in 2011.

Let the kids loose too at the Lizard Point Lighthouse, the last manned lighthouse before automation and now with a heritage centre with exhibits, displays and some of the original engines, or take them to drool over the dromedaries at Cornish Camels.

As it’s Cornwall, holidaymakers of an amphibious disposition will be in heaven with top sailing, surfing, scuba diving and other watersports along this stretch of Cornish coast, and several surf and scuba schools in the area for both newbies and water experts. Landlubbers will find plenty to do too: horse riding, bird (and shark) spotting, golf, fishing, clay pigeon shooting and more are all within reach.

Day trips include squawking at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary at Gweek, flying at the thrill rides of The Flambards Experience and Crealy Great Adventure Park, or browsing around the towns of Falmouth, St Ives, Penzance and Truro for seafood, shopping, more beautiful beaches and a boat ride to the ancient harbour at Marizion’s St Michael’s Mount.

Finally, round off your trip with an afternoon or evening at Penzance’s clifftop open-air Minack Theatre – squint a little bit at the amphitheatre and you could almost imagine you’re in Roman Britain…
