Chy Carne Holiday Park: Kennack Field

General

  • Relaxed family park 10 minutes' walk from Kennack Sands
  • Licensed shop, pizza takeaway, fire baskets and chimeneas on site
  • Three amenities blocks with well-kept toilets and hot showers

If your holiday checklist includes gorgeous Cornish sea views, quick access to golden beaches and so much to do for mini campers that you can fine the kids if anyone dares utter the phrase ‘I’m bored’, seasidey Chy Carne Holiday Park should tick all boxes for your break.

This is a relaxed, spacious and spankingly clean site with a strong family focus, dog-friendly and close to acclaimed beaches like Kennack Sands (10 minutes' walk) as well as many of the main attractions and towns of Cornwall. Helston, Falmouth and St Austell are all within easy reach, and spectacular Kynance Cove is five minutes' drive away.

The kids can go 'Aaaarrr' and clamber around the play pirate ship, get competitive at the outdoor games or kick a ball around the grassy open space, while the bigger folk can sit back and prepare the barbecue, have a campfire on one of the Chy Carne chimeneas or fire baskets, or sit back with a nosh or a sip from the licensed shop (opening times and stock limited out of season).

There’s a pizza takeaway on site too if you can’t be bothered cooking (open until 11pm in peak season), so you can polish off a pepperoni before moseying along to sit with a real ale or local cider in the summer marquee bar: with its lighting, seating and cosy atmosphere you may decide to linger for a while…

The first-class facilities here have plenty of hot showers (extra charge applies), toilets, washbasins and washing-up sinks (four, to be exact) so queues are unlikely even in peak season, and as the three amenity blocks are in different areas of the park there’ll be no need for long hikes to the toilet at night. There’s a launderette on site too with two commercial washing machines and two driers.

Chy Carne welcomes well-behaved pets.

Fantastic location. Our pitch was level, the site was quiet. We had good phone signal so did not need the site Wi-fi. Well stocked shop on site with marquee bar and pizza takeaway - we did not visit either of these while we were there but both looked very good. Lovely kids playground, table tennis table.

The nearby beach at Kennack Cove would be easy walking distance for most people but we drove there. Good parking at the beach where there are two cafes and toilets.

We will definitely go back for longer stay.

The sea view and fairly level pitch.

    Disliked:

Having to pay extra for a shower and internet access. No hairdryer. Shop didn't seem to be open most of the time and we didn't find any other shop nearby.

From the manager...

Thank you for your recent visit

The shop/Reception is open every morning and every afternoon whilst in low season at set times. There are many local shops and supermarkets in the local area within a few minutes if you so require
For information the showers are not free any where you may choose to stay but we opt to not charge for showers in the tariff
unlike those sites that claim to to have free showers but add the cost to the camping tariff
But it is clearly advertised that there is a small charge for the showers. By making the charge we help to ensure that there is minimal overstay in showers ensuring a smooth flow through the blocks reducing the waiting time that can be far more frustrating. We do provide hairdryers in The main shower block but currently unavailable due to waiting for new meters that have been delayed due to Covid as we are informed Of course you always have the option to bring your own as all pitches are electric at Chycarne

Good sized resort , any problems where dealt in a timely manner and nothing was too much trouble.

Was able to check in early which was very helpful after a 7+hour drive.

Caravan was dated as specified on booking, but was ideal for a week away and reasonably priced.

    Campsite clean and well maintained.

    Beautiful views

Was able to hire fire pit

    Shop on site selling essentials

    Children loved the ice cream

    Disliked:

Not much space for children to play ball games by caravan- children where able to play football on local beach which is a short walk from campsite.

Local attractions

The clean, safe and award-winning Kennack Sands (with lifeguards on duty during the summer months) is a 10-minute walk from Chy Carne, and has shops and cafés as well as a dog-friendly stretch on one side: hum the theme from Jaws as you spot a basking shark, or clamber up the coastal path for scenic walks in both directions.

A short drive away is Kynance Cove, which is one of the most photographed spots in Cornwall: fool folk that you’re in the Med by snapping a pic here or at postcard-perfect Mullion Cove on a sunny day.

The Site of Special Scientific Interest Goonhilly Downs is on the doorstep, best known for its Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station, once the biggest in the world and still with satellite dishes that can be seen for miles: the building of a new space science centre on the site was announced in 2011.

Let the kids loose too at the Lizard Point Lighthouse, the last manned lighthouse before automation and now with a heritage centre with exhibits, displays and some of the original engines, or take them to drool over the dromedaries at Cornish Camels.

As it’s Cornwall, holidaymakers of an amphibious disposition will be in heaven with top sailing, surfing, scuba diving and other watersports along this stretch of Cornish coast, and several surf and scuba schools in the area for both newbies and water experts. Landlubbers will find plenty to do too: horse riding, bird (and shark) spotting, golf, fishing, clay pigeon shooting and more are all within reach.

Day trips include squawking at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary at Gweek, flying at the thrill rides of The Flambards Experience and Crealy Great Adventure Park, or browsing around the towns of Falmouth, St Ives, Penzance and Truro for seafood, shopping, more beautiful beaches and a boat ride to the ancient harbour at Marizion’s St Michael’s Mount.

Finally, round off your trip with an afternoon or evening at Penzance’s clifftop open-air Minack Theatre – squint a little bit at the amphitheatre and you could almost imagine you’re in Roman Britain…
