Penrose Farm Wild Campsite: A short walk away

General

  • Off-grid wild camping on the Cornish coast two miles from Falmouth
  • Walk to Maenporth or Swanpool beach within 20 minutes
  • Sea views and direct access to the South West Coast Path

Getting out on the South West Coast Path could barely be easier than it is from Penrose Farm Wild Camping – this Cornwall site is right by the shoreline between Falmouth and Maenporth, and it has its own private access gate to the coast path.

That means you can get out for short or long seaside strolls whenever you like, or use the path to get to one of the local beaches: Maenporth and Swanpool are your closest, at about 15 minutes and 20 minutes’ walk respectively. There are places to eat at both spots too, so you could leave the car behind for several days here and simply get about on foot easily enough.

And there’s no need to leave the coast behind once you’re done with outings for the day, because this field is close enough to the shore to have gorgeous sea views from the pitches. They look out to the east, so it’s worth being up for sunrise, but they’re still splendid of an evening (and you can light up a barbecue or campfire to keep you warm as you sit and gaze out at the waves).

This is an off-grid wild camping site so facilities are limited, but you’ll have access to a compost loo. It’s all very laidback in vibe, so kids and dogs are welcome and there aren’t any real restrictions on arrival and departure times.

Incredible views, useful location, walkable to a beach

It was up a pretty rural track, we made it in our DS3 but anything lower than that you might have trouble. It's a proper wild campsite with nothing but a compost toilet and a tap

We loved the view and the easy access to the coastal path- position was ideal. Easy walk to excellent swim friendly beaches and seafood.restuarants.The isolation and quiet were perfect- no light or noise pollution at all. Nigel was very friendly and accommodating, and the compost toilets were fine.

    Disliked:

For people with mobility issues the walk to the coastal path might be too steep.

A nice peaceful wild campsite with plenty of space and good sea views. There are two good beaches with cafes etc a 10 or 25 minute walk from the campsite along well marked but steep footpaths.

The facilities are very basic with two composting toilets and a hosepipe for water that doesn't always work, but they are kept clean and the friendly management are very quick to respond to any queries / concerns.

    Disliked:

The asking price per pitch was more expensive than similarly situated sites that we stayed in this year that had much better facilities.

This is a stunning site. The view is worth the money everyday. Watched sunrise over towards St Mawes in the morning. Watched bats over the tent in the evening.
So peaceful. Short wander to Maenporth beach (avoiding £4 car park!) and slightly longer walk to Swanpool (again to avoid car parking costs!) Nigel is friendly and popped by a few times. Responses very quick to the text number provided, so don’t be afraid to use it if you need it! Compost toilet clean and wood shavings topped up regularly.
Access to water tap (not mentioned in description, but is there!)
Flattest pitches on highest part of the field at the back, making use from shelter from the hedge.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike per say… But something to note: Occasionally water stops when neighbours water garden (I guess water pressure) so make sure you collect it in the morning/midday. As they seem to use it in the evening! Was back on 30mins later anyway! So don’t panic!

From the manager...

Thank you for your constructive criticism, in our defence Pitch Up had no way of monitoring such a group booking. Everyone who stayed thst particular night booked separately from different places. With regards to the noise I wish you had given up the opportunity to deal with this. We have notices asking to contact us if any problems and seeing as this seemed to be late then we had no way of knowing due to being in bed ourselves. We suspect it was due to the fact they had been in town watching the lionesses win and carried on once back. Had we been aware of such noise I would have kindly asked them to tone their noise levels down, but as we weren't notified till the following day, this experience could've been avoided. All we can do is apologise and I can assure you that we won't tolerate such behaviour is we had known.
As for level of facilities, we are a basic campsite and the facilities (composte toilets and tap) are highlighted within pitch up, we've never tried to claim we have anymore. We pride ourselves on the panoramic sea views with direct access to the south west coast path.

Local attractions

The coast is the big draw around here, of course – and no doubt you’ll start with outings to Maenporth and Swanpool beach, which are both within 20 minutes’ walk.

You could continue from either of these for a splendid day’s walking along the South West Coast Path – perhaps as far as Durgan (an hour and a half’s walk), where you can turn inland to explore Glendurgan Garden or Trebah Garden. Alternatively you can drive to either within 15 minutes.

Spotted any seals as you walk? It’s perhaps unlikely, so you may need to pay a visit to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary (25 minutes’ drive). To meet equally cute four-legged rescue animals, aim for the Flicka Foundation donkey sanctuary (10 minutes).

Some time in Falmouth (five minutes’ drive/40 minutes’ walk) is also a fine idea, to peruse Pendennis Castle, visit the art galleries and take a boat to St Mawes, a lovely little fishing village across the estuary with a beach, castle and a network of winding streets to wander through.
