General

  • Hidden in Cornish countryside but only 3.5 miles from Widemouth Bay
  • Campfires and barbecues encouraged
  • Logs, kindling and pottery available to buy

Hidden away in the Cornish countryside but only three and a half miles from Widemouth Bay, Bakesdown Farm is a peaceful place for old-school stays. No noisy bars, evening entertainment or internet café here, just the roar of your campfire or sizzle of the barbie right by your farm home, and heaps of space for all guests to have maximum room and privacy.

The toilet, shower and wash basin are sited in the farmyard about 20 metres away, and a drinking water tap is in the camping field. Logs, kindling and postcards are available to buy at all times, with an honesty box for payment. Hand-thrown (and handsome) pottery is also made on the farm: guests are welcome to go and have a browse for souvenirs.

Fridges are provided in the farmyard area for the use of all guests.

WOW! This place is amazing if you really want to get away from it all! Barely any phone signal, no internet, and no electric...fab! The range of birds and wildlife is great and a lovely little private woodland walk. So remote barely any light pollution so the stars look incredible. The kitchen was really well equipped and we were delighted it had a cafetierre. The wood burner in the cabin was great and made it so warm and cosy. The beach widemouth bay is 3 miles away and is stunning with a great place to eat right on the beach. We will defo be returning in the spring! Thank you to Mark who was very friendly helpful and accommodating and really let us get on with it which is what we really liked as felt that we were all alone in our very own slice of natural paradise. Please don't change it's truly a hidden gem!

The place was lovely and quirky. Had the assentials. Very friendly and helpful. Pitches are brilliant size and the fire pit is a fantastic extra. Also very easy to find with a satnav. If you like basic camping. This is the place for you. Credit to the owners. So simple but so brilliant at the same time.

    Disliked:

Logs didn't burn well at all. I'll take my own next time. Other campers found them to be the same.

Wonderful and relaxing yurt for couples looking for a good value break 29/06/2017

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Peter J. Confirmed

  • Great Meadow 1 bedroom yurt (2 adults and 2 children)
  • Recommend to friends   Visit again
  • Liked:

Absolutely ideal for couples to relax and unwind together in a totally private and quiet location. Everything was there apart from bedding which you are told to bring with you, although some blankets are available if you get chilly. Frying pans, saucepans, chopping board, knives, cutlery, fish slice, ladle, tin opener, plates, bowls, mugs, colander all present.

We had no trouble finding the place and this is a great location particularly for walking along the north coast but we also visited the Hurlers, Eden, Trebah and the amazing Japanese garden nr Newquay. Next time we visit we will do less during the day though as this is definitely a superb place to come and do nothing, read a book, stare at the clouds etc.

For the price the facilities here represent excellent value and very nice taste of off grid living and the best value camping of this nature that we have ever seen. The firewood was also reasonably priced.

Plenty of wildlife including a little tinker who stole three apples, munched our bread and pulled a tea bag out of the bin and threw it around the floor (advisable not to be too casual about leaving food out).

The owners here are clearly not trying to milk visitors for all they can get, stuffing people in closely, overcharging for firewood and hiring out firepits etc. like some campsites do and this is greatly appreciated.

Usually we like to try new places every year but there is no doubt we will look at booking this first next year, or possibly even visit again later this year.

    Disliked:

Grill knob was very stiff once the grill had been used - difficult to turn off.
If you hang your stuff on the hooks in the shower cubicle they will get soaked!
(We used one of the kitchen chairs outside to put towel etc on which worked just fine).
Slight ingress of water under the door step when raining - the door mat soaked this up but probably will need attention at some point.

Directions

From Bude or A39:
Turn right onto the A39 (towards Wadebridge). Take the first left off the A39, signed Marhamchurch. Follow this road into the village of Marhamchurch until you reach the T-junction. Turn left, and follow this road out of the village and on for about 2 miles. On the brow of a hill is a left turn for 'Titson'. Take this left and follow road for another 1/2 mile. In the hamlet of Titson take the right turn immediately before the converted chapel . Follow this lane for 1/2 mile. You climb a hill, take a sharp righthand bend, and there is Lower Bakesdown Farm. Drive into the yard on your left, and the farm signs will direct you to your holiday space.

From Launceston or A30:
Take the Pennygillam exit off the A30 into Launceston. At the end of the slip road turn left and follow this road through Launceston. At the roundabout at the bottom of the hill, go straight on (2nd exit) up a very steep road past the school. Follow this road (B3254) through St Stephens and on for about 10 miles. You enter the village Whitstone (note your closest shop to thefarm is here, on the right as you drive through the village). As you leave the village, take the left turn signposted 'Whitstone Head', just after the speed limit signs. Follow this lane for 2 miles. The farmyard is on your right, with a long cream-coloured stable building alongside, signed Lower Bakesdown Farm. Drive into the yard, and the farm signs will direct you to your holiday space.

Local attractions

Just 3.5 miles away guests will find beaches, the coastal path, surf hire and surf lessons.

The walks, cafés and bike hire aplenty of Bude Canal is 4.5 miles from the site. You can also access the pretty canal walks at Marhamchurch which is even closer to the campsite (just two miles away).

The popular seaside town of Bude is five miles away while Launceston town is a little further afield but still well worth a visit at only nine miles away.
