General

  • Hidden in Cornish countryside but only 3.5 miles from Widemouth Bay
  • Campfires and barbecues encouraged
  • Logs, kindling and pottery available to buy

Hidden away in the Cornish countryside but only three and a half miles from Widemouth Bay, Bakesdown Farm is a peaceful place for old-school stays. No noisy bars, evening entertainment or internet café here, just the roar of your campfire or sizzle of the barbie right by your farm home, and heaps of space for all guests to have maximum room and privacy.

The toilet, shower and wash basin are sited in the farmyard about 20 metres away, and a drinking water tap is in the camping field. Logs, kindling and postcards are available to buy at all times, with an honesty box for payment. Hand-thrown (and handsome) pottery is also made on the farm: guests are welcome to go and have a browse for souvenirs.

Fridges are provided in the farmyard area for the use of all guests.

Peace and quiet, beautiful location, very friendly and helpful. Only 5-10 mins from civilization and nearby beaches

    Disliked:

Small single beds, suitable for young children only.
Lack of purpose built through ventilation made the cabin like a sauna in the hot weather. Easy fix.
Need to move shower out of the cubicle as you can get a whiff of burnt calor gas when there is a breeze.
The wind blew the gas hob out several times, maybe a sheild of some sort needed

The site location is great for access to the coast or inland but feels nicely off the beaten track. The setting of the camping field is superb with a great view. The field is surrounded by tall hedge rows and trees and the grass between pitches is.left to grow long so it feels wild (pitches themselves are mown). Facilities are good and clean with nice personal touches including an old caravan where the children can hang out, with a small selection of books and honesty box for buying marshmallows or delicious local ice cream. You can also buy logs and kindling with an honesty box for your cash. A big fridge and charging point are really useful additions. And the shower is hot with a decent flow. The facilities are on farm buildings in the small farm yard. This is a working farm and its so nice that it is not sanitised. However the facilities are all at their own end of the yard so you don't need to go through any working areas. There are swallows nesting, bats at night and owls calling in the distance. Perfect when your sitting by the campfire (each pitch has a fire.pit with cut logs for seats). The welcome was also very warm. One of the owners Mark is a great chap, happy to chat about farming and wildlife. In the tent field is a water tap, basic sink for washing up, a washing line and all the bins you'll need for rubbish or recycling. My pitch was slightly uneven but not enough to be a problem.

Wow just wow, we had such a lovely time, we will definitely be back next year. The exclusive pitch is split in two parts. The bigger "room" has space for several tents, has a massive fire pit, toilet, shower and washing up area. The other "room" which we called the back garden. This has room for more tents or could be used for playing games away from the tents in the main room. We used it for relaxing in the sun and look out over the lovely views.

The main farm is just a few minutes walk down the road, where you have access to a a fridge and freezer for ice-blocks, firewood and kindling.

We had between 3g and 4g coverage (on three).

We unfortunately had to cancel our stay as we were moving house that week. True to their word, Bakesdown refunded our booking in full as they were able to re-sell the pitch. Really great service and we hope to book again with them (and actually go!) next year.

Directions

From Bude or A39:
Turn right onto the A39 (towards Wadebridge). Take the first left off the A39, signed Marhamchurch. Follow this road into the village of Marhamchurch until you reach the T-junction. Turn left, and follow this road out of the village and on for about 2 miles. On the brow of a hill is a left turn for 'Titson'. Take this left and follow road for another 1/2 mile. In the hamlet of Titson take the right turn immediately before the converted chapel . Follow this lane for 1/2 mile. You climb a hill, take a sharp righthand bend, and there is Lower Bakesdown Farm. Drive into the yard on your left, and the farm signs will direct you to your holiday space.

From Launceston or A30:
Take the Pennygillam exit off the A30 into Launceston. At the end of the slip road turn left and follow this road through Launceston. At the roundabout at the bottom of the hill, go straight on (2nd exit) up a very steep road past the school. Follow this road (B3254) through St Stephens and on for about 10 miles. You enter the village Whitstone (note your closest shop to thefarm is here, on the right as you drive through the village). As you leave the village, take the left turn signposted 'Whitstone Head', just after the speed limit signs. Follow this lane for 2 miles. The farmyard is on your right, with a long cream-coloured stable building alongside, signed Lower Bakesdown Farm. Drive into the yard, and the farm signs will direct you to your holiday space.

Local attractions

Just 3.5 miles away guests will find beaches, the coastal path, surf hire and surf lessons.

The walks, cafés and bike hire aplenty of Bude Canal is 4.5 miles from the site. You can also access the pretty canal walks at Marhamchurch which is even closer to the campsite (just two miles away).

The popular seaside town of Bude is five miles away while Launceston town is a little further afield but still well worth a visit at only nine miles away.
