Simple Camping Field

General

  • Secluded and spacious site in a spectacular countryside setting
  • Four miles from Widemouth Bay and 20 minutes’ drive from Bude beach
  • Logs, kindling, postcards and pottery available to buy at the park

Tucked away in the Cornish countryside four miles from Widemouth Bay, Bakesdown Farm is a peaceful place for stays of the old-school sort. There’s no noisy bar or evening entertainment here – it’s just the crackle of the firepit and sizzle of the barbecue right outside your temporary home.

That’s not to say this spacious and secluded site has no handy amenities, though: a little caravan has ice creams for sale, as well as books and toys for the kids to borrow, and there's a charging point to keep your phone juiced up – you'll likely need that GPS when you’re out wandering in the splendid surrounds. A fridge-freezer is in the farmyard area as well, so food sourced from the supermarket in Bude (just over 15 minutes’ drive) will stay fresh for longer.

Once your mobile’s charged up, get your map app on the go and start saving some of the top things to do in the local area: there’s a beach at Bude for surfing lessons (with hire available if you’re already an expert at riding the waves) and strolls along the South West Coast Path are within 20 minutes’ drive.

Made some memories while dawdling around these destinations? Take some of the handsome hand-thrown pottery for sale at Bakesdown Farm home with you as souvenirs; logs and kindling are available to buy for the campfire too, plus ice creams for warmer days (just make sure to bring some cash for the honesty box).

Bakesdown Farm also has a toilet, shower and washbasin facilities.

Please note

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, customers can amend their dates with the campsite/holiday park free of charge for all stays up to, and including, Monday 31 May 2021.

This cabin is an absolute gem of a find and exceeded our expactations in every single way. The cabin is cosy and inviting with comfortable beds, a log burner and a nice deep sofa. The outside camp kitchen is perfect and well equipped and the compost toilet and gas shower were such a delight. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect weekend getaway. The fact that the cabin only had fairy lights for lighting only made the place even more rustic. We loved it!!

What an amazing find. I stayed with my my brother and partner. The pitch sizes are huge and having a fire every night was just brilliant. I love the honesty box for everything it just adds at that extra touch.

The cabin was great fun, it felt like we were in a story book! The outdoor kitchen was brilliant and had everything we needed. The family that run Bakesdown Farm were incredibly welcoming and lovely, made us feel at home and just added to the relaxed feel of the site. Our two boys (10 and 7) enjoyed running around the field, finding grasshoppers, sitting round the fire pit, playing football with others staying next door, and waking up to play board games.

This is such a lovely spot, hidden away down lanes yet near to some great beaches and days out.

We stopped here for 2 nights in the middle of a Somerset to Cornwall camping trip, it was perfect to not have to get the whole camping kit out, and completely reset us ready for the next part of the adventure.

Local attractions

Once you’ve maxed out all the coastal walks within a 20-minute drive of Bakesdown Farm have a gentler lope along some of the local canals instead – Marhamchurch’s towpath is a 10-minute drive away, while the one at Bude (with cafés and bike hire nearby as well) is 15 minutes away.

If traipsing about the latter’s town centre whets your appetite for more urban experiences in Cornwall, head to the county’s former capital of Launceston, 25 minutes’ drive inland in the Tamar Valley. Wander up to the hilltop castle or make tracks towards the narrow-gauge steam railway; independent shops are also here if you fancy rifling the racks.

Alternatively, head back to Bude beach for walks along the golden sweep of sand or pull out your paddleboard and glide along the water at the lido-like sea pool scenically set among the rocks.

Must see

  • Tintagel Castle (14.2 miles)
  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (19.0 miles)
  • Rock Beach (25.0 miles)

National Trust

  • Lawrence House (11.1 miles)
  • Tintagel Old Post Office (14.1 miles)
