General

  • Hidden in Cornish countryside but only 3.5 miles from Widemouth Bay
  • Campfires and barbecues encouraged
  • Logs, kindling and pottery available to buy

Hidden away in the Cornish countryside but only three and a half miles from Widemouth Bay, Bakesdown Farm is a peaceful place for old-school stays. No noisy bars, evening entertainment or internet café here, just the roar of your campfire or sizzle of the barbie right by your farm home, and heaps of space for all guests to have maximum room and privacy.

The toilet, shower and wash basin are sited in the farmyard about 20 metres away, and a drinking water tap is in the camping field. Logs, kindling and postcards are available to buy at all times, with an honesty box for payment. Hand-thrown (and handsome) pottery is also made on the farm: guests are welcome to go and have a browse for souvenirs.

Fridges are provided in the farmyard area for the use of all guests.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Excellent site with spotlessly clean facilities. 17/06/2019

What a beautiful, secluded farm to stay on. Orchard cabin is beautifully decorated, with shower, kitchen and compost toilet facilities on hand. The location and scenery is exquisite. There are additional toilet and shower facilities located close to the farmhouse should you wish to use them, together with a small caravan selling trinkets, and an honesty box for kindling and logs for the log-burner and fire pit. There is plenty to do for children and a wonderful introduction to town dwellers wishing to introduce a simpler way of living. Most everything had been thought of; blankets, fairy lights, a range of board games, and cards etc. Our host was pleasant and helpful, in showing us how to use the facilities, but was in no way intrusive and left us to enjoy our time.

    Disliked:

My only criticism would be that Orchard Cabin could benefit from solar panels.

    Very spacious small campsite.
Plenty space for children to run around and play.
Toilet and shower was clean throughout the stay
Honesty pay for Woods and kindling was really impressive and ice-cream too.
Children play caravan was additional bonus for my children.
Quite area as well apart from passing local vehicles.
Tent pitch to Car and water supply is quite close.
Toilet and shower block also was closer than i thought.
we are hoping to go back next year.

This was our third visit and we just love the place. You get a huge pitch for your tent(s) and with just four pitches in the field so loads of space and not crowded. Loved cooking on the camp fire and firewood is for sale in the farm yard at a very reasonable price. The toilet and shower are kept lovely and clean.

The family that own the farm are really kind but we hardly saw them for the whole week we were there. They come and said hello on the first day then leave you to get on with it.

Everything has just the right balance of perfection and informality to make you feel really relaxed during your stay.

It's an easy drive to Bude for the beaches, surfing and bodyboarding. We also tried canoeing on the Bude canal this time which was great. Walking on the coast path and a trip to Heligan one day to escape the rain. An excellent holiday.

Firepits for all! 27/05/2019

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Lauren J. Confirmed

  • Non-electric grass tent pitch

Only 4 pitches in our area, which was nice. Up to 6 people per pitch.

Firepit for each pitch which make our stay. £1.50 for a basket of kindling. £3.50 for a bucket of logs.

    Ice cream offerings.

Anna was very friendly and polite. Made sure we knew where to find her if we needed anything.

    Quiet and back to nature.

    Disliked:

Only one toilet and shower for what could have been up to 24 people, with that area of pitches. But it was not that busy on our stay so it was no problem.

Not walkable to any shops or pubs or anything from what we saw.

Quiet seclusion in beautiful surroundings 10/09/2018

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Liam W. Confirmed

  • Great Orchard 2 bedroom cabin
  • Recommend to friends   Visit again
  • Liked:

The Great Orchard Cabin is set in beautiful surroundings amongst real peace and quiet. It is a very comfortable accommodation with a generous amount of living space compared to similar types of cabins. It also comes with a wood burning stove, which we didn't need this time of year, but would certainly come in handy during the winter months.

The separate kitchen, just a few yards away, is a brilliant idea and it is really well equipped so I had no trouble cooking up breakfast on the gas hob. We also used the outdoor fire pit for doing a barbecue one evening and this is really well setup.

There is also a separate shower room and toilet just a few yards away, so everything one would ever need is within reach, which gives a real sense of privacy and seclusion.

    Disliked:

Can't really complain, but the frying pan could do with replacing with a non-stick newer model. A good sharp chopping knife and a knife sharpener would also make good additions. But otherwise, it is a really well-stocked kitchen.

Anyone complaining about lack of electricity or WiFi is totally missing the point about why someone would come to a place like this :-)

Directions

From Bude or A39:
Turn right onto the A39 (towards Wadebridge). Take the first left off the A39, signed Marhamchurch. Follow this road into the village of Marhamchurch until you reach the T-junction. Turn left, and follow this road out of the village and on for about 2 miles. On the brow of a hill is a left turn for 'Titson'. Take this left and follow road for another 1/2 mile. In the hamlet of Titson take the right turn immediately before the converted chapel . Follow this lane for 1/2 mile. You climb a hill, take a sharp righthand bend, and there is Lower Bakesdown Farm. Drive into the yard on your left, and the farm signs will direct you to your holiday space.

From Launceston or A30:
Take the Pennygillam exit off the A30 into Launceston. At the end of the slip road turn left and follow this road through Launceston. At the roundabout at the bottom of the hill, go straight on (2nd exit) up a very steep road past the school. Follow this road (B3254) through St Stephens and on for about 10 miles. You enter the village Whitstone (note your closest shop to thefarm is here, on the right as you drive through the village). As you leave the village, take the left turn signposted 'Whitstone Head', just after the speed limit signs. Follow this lane for 2 miles. The farmyard is on your right, with a long cream-coloured stable building alongside, signed Lower Bakesdown Farm. Drive into the yard, and the farm signs will direct you to your holiday space.

Local attractions

Just 3.5 miles away guests will find beaches, the coastal path, surf hire and surf lessons.

The walks, cafés and bike hire aplenty of Bude Canal is 4.5 miles from the site. You can also access the pretty canal walks at Marhamchurch which is even closer to the campsite (just two miles away).

The popular seaside town of Bude is five miles away while Launceston town is a little further afield but still well worth a visit at only nine miles away.
