  • Off-grid and eco-conscious family site in the Sussex countryside
  • Half an hour’s drive from Ashdown Forest and Brighton
  • Communal firepit and picnic tables; pubs a short walk away
Say hello to festival vibes and sunset skies across an off-grid, eco-conscious retreat named Sunset Tree Camping. This family-friendly site has creativity at its core and it’s a place for people who want more than just a nice place to plant down a while. This place is all about connection and community – there’s a communal firepit, picnic benches in the woods, solar lighting at night and plenty of green space to spread out and make friends. In addition to all of this, the dog-friendly family site is in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, less than half an hour’s drive from Ashdown Forest (an ancient forest once used for deer hunting and now a fine spot for hikes, horse riding, and archaeology). There’s a playground and two pubs on the green in Staplefield, 10 minutes’ walk away, and shops and another pub 25 minutes’ walk away in nearby Handcross. For fine dining, just head west to Slaugham (15 minutes’ walk). Those of you planning to cook a big spread on site can locate larger supermarkets in Haywards Heath (10 minutes’ drive) too. All of the above makes this a handy location – almost as handy as the site facilities, which include a sheltered communal eating area with a four-metre banquet table lit by solar lighting, a hot shower, composting toilets, solar lights in the woods and a wash room with a sink and running water. The on-site Sunrise Café serves tasty breakfasts such as bacon, sausage and egg rolls (gluten-free and veggie options are availble), as well as pastries and coffee or tea. Guests are encouraged to lend their voices, music and hands to help with co-creating the site’s ‘enchanted village’ but if you’re feeling like a lazier day, there’s a hammock in the Dragon Woods and plenty of wildlife to spot around the trees. Kids can also play with the bats, balls, bikes and scooters. From Staplefield, feel free to get out on wanders across the Sussex countryside – perhaps to Nymans (25 minutes’ walk) a National Trust garden with house ruins? There’s plenty of space to relax or play when you’re back, as well as join families, friends and strangers in stargazing at night.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Nice, relaxed, pitch-where-you-like-in-the-field site with a great space at the bottom of the field for kids to play - there's a little wooded area with bikes, toys etc where they can run wild. Good composting toilets and washing up areas with gas for heating water. There are a couple of pubs within walking distance. The site owners were great - really friendly and helpful.

Disliked: Nothing significant. If you're looking for somewhere absolutely silent at night then maybe note that the A23 passes somewhere in the area so you can hear a gentle hum of traffic late at night when everything else quietens down.

Liked: The camping spot was amazing, great for the kids with the forest. I couldn't get my boy out of there he lived it so so much. The weather was beautiful and we were able to make full use of the stretch tent and family benches, where we had a bbq. I could recommend it enough, we will definitely be back.

Liked: We loved this camp site. The people were great and made us feel very welcome and cared for. The general vibe of the place is relaxed and friendly, kids were running about enjoying themselves in the open space as well as in the woods. We had a very relaxing time on site and there were great places to walk the dog for hours. In addition the washing up stations had gas burners set up so if you needed you could boil water or even heat up a pot of food without bringing your own stove. We would without doubt consider returning next summer. And if you're looking for a low frills relaxing easy going campsite I can't recommend this enough. Thanks to the team on site x

Disliked: There was nothing to dislike, the facilities while rudimentary were perfectly adequate, so no complaints at all.

Liked: I liked absolutely everything about this campsite. Upon arrival, the owner Adam greeted me with a very welcoming, positive attitude. All the staff and the owner all care about this campsite a lot and it really shows. I really enjoyed the late night chat around the campfire where everybody was lovely. I had a great time. I wish I booked a longer stay but I will definitely come back!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Quiet, relaxed site full of charm. Loved the magical wood complete with fire circle and wooden dragon. They had children's climbing frame and drawing den. Washing up and cooking Stations were a great idea. The pizza van was amazing!! The food was fantastic and the chief was a really nice bloke. All staff were very friendly and helpful. You could hire a firepit or use the big community fire circle. Compost loos were fine to use. They actually smelt quite nice as they smelt if the sawdust you used in them.

Disliked: Having to park the car in a different field but you could park it at the site to unpack etc. They had wheel barrows you could use for your things which was a nice touch. It would be good if they could have a basic shower.

Liked: Such a great location, beautiful spot and run by lovely people. We had a great time, the doggo loved it and so did we. Everybody was super friendly, the facilities were great - and the addition of the little campsite cafe was excellent (and Andy's cooking is supberb). There are also 2 great pubs a 5 minute walk away and Nymans National Trust an easy walk away. Plus we managed to get there on public transport from Brighton! Can't thank the staff enough or recommend highly enough, we'll definitely be back - hopefully when there's live music next time!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The effort to the stay a unique and memorable experience. The site manager put a lot of effort into the Saturday night music and communal areas which is very unique. I emailed with a question and got a very fast response.

Disliked: Nothing disliked but just make sure you understand it’s not a typical mainstream campsite. It made no promises it didn’t keep - like there’s no typical shower block but it never claimed to have that.

Local attractions

Nymans isn’t the only grand historic house or estate in the surrounding Sussex countryside. Borde Hill Garden (10 minutes’ drive), privately owned, has all sorts of rare plants, a gorgeous rose garden and parklands for picnics. The National Trust’s Wakehurst (20 minutes) is yet another wildlife haven and the location of a huge seed conservation project, all next to an Elizabethan mansion. If that’s not enough magnolia, rose and other natural scents for you, the National Trust - Sheffield Park & Garden (half an hour) is a landscaped garden that runs workshops such as forest bathing and photography. When you’re fully recharged and ready for brighter lights and beaches, Brighton (half an hour) – including its piers, aquarium and artsy independent shops – is to the south of the site.
