  • Well-maintained, nature-rich site with fishing lakes
  • A 15-minute drive from Chichester and 20 from West Wittering beach
  • On the edge of a farm with access to South Downs walking trails
Into the sort of break where you can ditch the car and wander merrily into the countryside along hours and hours’ worth of walking trails? Then sort a stay in the South Downs National Park at Newbarn Lakes Camping, a spot in West Sussex around 15 minutes’ drive from Chichester. Plonked on the edge of a working farm in nature-rich surrounds, the site is close to three villages (each with a pub for eats and drinks) and five minutes or so from the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Not that you need to go far for activities… This farm park allows coarse fishing at its ponds (organise in advance by getting in touch with the site on the email info provided in your booking) and has a large lake for whiling the day away with a watery view. Fancy dips in the sea as well? Wing your way to West Wittering beach (20 minutes away) for outings at the coast. Other places of interest in the local area include Bosham, the Goodwood Motor Circuit (15 minutes) and Arundel Castle (half an hour), to name a few. This site is a stripped-back sort of spot with running water for washing facilities and a hose for cold showers (please note that there are no hot showers here).

Local attractions

Wild walks are a breeze to access from this park. Drive five minutes to the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, an undeveloped coastal area, to wander through a 3,733.5-hectare geological Site of Special Scientific Interest. Made up of shoreline, salt marshes and mudflats, the landscape is lovely and varied. Fishbourne Roman Palace (10 minutes) is around here too, the biggest ever residential Roman building dug up in Britain to date. Built just 30 years after the Roman conquest, this historical hotspot is well worth a look. Seeking city times? Check out Chichester (15 minutes) for the 12th-century cathedral or travel a touch further on to Portsmouth (25 minutes). The latter has a dockyard housing the National Museum of the Royal Navy and the wooden HMS Victory warship, where Admiral Nelson died in the Battle of Trafalgar. Another ace bit of architecture to admire in the area is Arundel Castle, a restored medieval structure with grand gardens (half an hour). Or perhaps you've got a need for speed? Race around the Goodwood Motor Circuit (15 minutes), the famed track for two- and four-wheeled motorsports, instead.
