  • Pods at a National Hunt Racing stables in the village of Findon
  • A 10-minute drive to Worthing beach; half an hour to Chichester
  • Direct access to South Downs National Park; short walk to village pubs
Head to the heart of the South Downs for a stay among the horses at The Downs Stables – pods here are part of a historic National Hunt Racing stables in the village of Findon, just below Cissbury Ring. This is a splendid spot for those who are keen on all things equestrian – you’ll get to see the horses being put through their paces on site, and may be able to time your stay to coincide with races at nearby Goodwood, Fontwell Park or Plumpton. You’ll also be following in the footsteps of some legendary trainers including Josh Gifford and Captain Ryan Price, who both worked out of Findon, turning out outstanding horses including Classic winners Ginevra and Bruni. There’s much to appreciate here even if you have little interest in horses. The village is a lovely place to base yourselves, with several independent shops, some pretty houses, four pubs, an excellent Indian takeaway and a smart fine dining restaurant that offers a discount to guests for midweek meals. The property also has direct access to the South Downs for West Sussex walks and bike rides galore, and the seaside town of Worthing is only about 10 minutes’ drive away. Back on site, you’ll be staying in a cosy glamping pod for two, with a double bed, an outdoor seating area and a barbecue all provided. Just across the path is a separate building (shared between two pods) containing a large kitchen (with fridge, oven, hob and microwave) and a toilet and shower room.

Camping pod

Liked: Great location, well equipped, there is even a hair dryer! Very comfortable bed, great set up, fully equipped kitchen with glasses, cutlery etc. oven, microwave. 2 bathrooms and 1 shower. Very clean, hosts are super friendly and very helpful! The only minus is that in the pictures there were outside chairs besides the table, but we had our own anyways. Maybe if asked they would have prprovided👌

Camping pod

Liked: We were lucky and had the place to ourselves as there were no other guests while we were there. The stables are just a short walk from the centre of the lovely village which has a couple of excellent pubs. The facilities, especially the well-equipped kitchen, exceeded expectations (though perhaps this was partly because we did not need to share them). The check-in/out experience was very smooth. The host kindly allowed us to leave our bags on site after the check-out time on our final day to collect later in the day. The location was a good base to explore this part of the South Downs. We spent one day walking from the stables out and around Cissbury Ring and Chanctonbury Ring. On our second day, we took a short bus ride to Storrington from where we walked up Kithurst Hill, along the South Downs Way to Amberley and around via Parham Park. I highly recommend both walks. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and felt the accommodation was very good value.

Disliked: We were not able to use the barbecue as we couldn't find anywhere to buy charcoal etc., however the kitchen ended up being a better option for us anyway. Some other locations may have more walking options immediately accessible on foot without needing to travel via car or bus, however this was not a problem for us. Had we been sharing with other guests, I imagine we would have had to wait for the bathroom and kitchen facilities at times.

Camping pod

Liked: Great location being actually within a racing stables at the foot of the South Downs. Particularly fortunate that we stayed over a three-day period which included the stables open morning. Very good, roomy and well-equipped kitchen.

Disliked: Slightly inconvenient having to walk across the path to the toilets, but that was foreseen so no complaints.

Camping pod

Liked: The accommodation and people were helpful and very kind with all that was provided. The kitchen had tea, coffee, cereals, bread, jam, milk all provided and there was small fridge in the pod which made it easy to have cold drinks in the room. Lovely setting and will be going back again for long weekend to spend more time walking the local area. Findon village is very nice with pubs and Indian takeaway, local post office and community shop everyone was very welcoming. We enjoyed seeing the horses at stables and seeing some of their routines for warming up before going on to the gallops. We stayed there for the 4 days, having bathroom and toilet that we shared only with one more pod meant there was no waiting for use of facilities. We usually camp for Goodwood festival of speed but tried something different and the journey in each day wasn't difficult so having the comfort of proper bed and bathroom, kitchen was worth the journey. Would highly recommend

Disliked: There was nothing to dislike
