  • Almost-wild camping on a peaceful farm site near Storrington
  • A 20-minute drive to the coast and Arundel Castle; 40 to Brighton
  • A mile from South Downs National Park; pub 15 minutes' walk away
Little Thakeham Farm is a quiet site on a farm in the West Sussex countryside, a mile and a half (five minutes’ drive) from Storrington. This is a fab location for folk seeking space to stroll or ride bikes: the edge of the South Downs National Park is about a mile away, and you can hit the coast with a drive of 20 minutes or so. Closer to home, there are plenty of public footpaths in the area around the farm, and it’s an easily doable 15-minute wander to the local pub (a cosy country inn with local ales and tasty home cooking, no less). There are more eateries in the nearby town of Storrington, and it’s also the place to pick up whatever you need for a barbecue back at base. There’s plenty of space on site here but the owners keep numbers down to just a handful of pitches, so you’ll never have to share the place with too many other people. Facilities on site have been kept to a bare minimum to preserve the peaceful vibe, but it’s not entirely wild camping as guests will have access to a portable toilet and fresh water.

Guyhurst non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We loved the location, the field is incredible and so are all the trees. The campsite is very peaceful. There is a yellow bus that can be hired which is so cute. It was easy to find and very very relaxing.

Guyhurst non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Large open space. Wild camping style. Friendly staff.

Disliked: The grass was far too long and had many thistles so our child could not enjoy playing on the grass. A simple mow would have improved the whole experience. Not the easiest place to access. Narrow, poorly maintained overgrown roads from the main road to the field with poor signage. If a car was coming the opposite way it would be impossible to pass and very difficult for either car to reverse back. Campers were still able to pitch up after the 6pm curfew. This is not ideal with a young child as he was awoken by cars driving up very close to our tent between 9:30 - 10pm shining torches on our tent and circling for a pitch in their car. Staff do not have a means to stop this it seems. Farmers plough / tractor in nearby fields for most of the evening was noisy. No real views - basic farmers field

Liked: The setting - a beautiful field and surroundings. Very back to basics camping, as described, which suited us fine for our short stay. Helpful campsite owner.

Disliked: Could have done with much clearer directions for arrival and for finding the site, especially for walkers - the google link takes you to the wrong place, and the address listed also doesn't give you an accurate location. The flush on the Portaloo wasn't working well when we stayed - an easy fix I imagine.

Liked: Open meadow, minimal camps allowed so big open space. Basic but lovely to be able to let dogs off and roam, as well as site allowing campfires. Lovely owner who checked on us each day.

Liked: Had a very relaxing time at this site. Host was great and very informative. There were good walks directly from the site and the pub was just a 20 minute walk away.

Non-electric grass trailer tent pitch

Liked: So much space, clean and tidy. If you want to get back to basics it’s perfect. Water tap, and a porterloo. Take a touch, no lighting. Friendly land owner who is happy to chat. Short drive to the festival of speed at Goodwood. Long drive to field, ok for car or camper but not a caravan.

Guyhurst non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Chilled as ever and thoroughly relaxing. You are just left alone to enjoy the spectacular scenery, with our favourite pub just a half hour walk away. This was our 4th year at Little Thakeham which probably says everything you need to know 😊😊

Disliked: The (one) portaloo for the whole field by Sunday morning was full to overflowing and out of paper towels and water.

From the manager: Glad you enjoyed your stay with us and thank you for your review. The lavatory should have been serviced and emptied over the weekend however owing to adverse weather and high winds this the tanker truck was out of action. More loos will be in place later this season and also for 2024.

Badly maintained facilities but nice location.

Guyhurst non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Owner was friendly and the landscape was really beautiful.

Disliked: There was only one dixi toilet for the entire site, which was full after 2 days and also wasn’t emptied, so it was an imposition to even use it as the tap inside also wasn’t working most of the time. There was one tap outside for fresh water access but it was just loosely hanging over some old dirty stone tub covered in nettles so it wasn’t fun to use. Apart from that the remaining facilities are not maintained and unusable.
