  • Dog-friendly wild camping site surrounded by woodlands in West Sussex
  • A 20-minute drive from Leith Hill and 35 minutes from the South Downs
  • Two pubs, food shop and butcher a short walk away; barbecues allowed
It’s all about wild camping and fully embracing the outdoor experience at Sands Farm Weekend Camping, surrounded by green woodlands in the West Sussex countryside. This dog-friendly site just outside Warnham is particularly well placed for hikers – it’s in a sweet spot between the South Downs National Park, the Surrey Hills National Landscape and the High Weald National Landscape. As it’s an off-grid and remote setup there aren’t too many distractions around this site other than the footpaths and bridleways close by, including a couple directly accessible from the site. You can also walk to the village of Warnham in about 20 minutes for a dainty church, a small food shop, a couple of pubs and a butchers to help you get the goods ready for a barbecue back on site. You’ll have a nice amount of privacy for your barbecue, as each pitch has its own mown patch in the long grass. The facilities on site are kept simple for an authentic wild camping break, so this means you’ll have access to portable toilets and running water at all times – but there’s no chemical waste disposal or electricity here. While you already have a typical English village close by, you may want to track down any missing essentials in Horsham, a larger market town 10 minutes’ drive away, or the supermarket 10 minutes down the road.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked I loved the design of the site. Really spacious pitches and loads of space between you and the next camper. The site is lovely and secluded, surrounded by trees and then fields. Andy who runs the site is a top bloke with a vast knowledge of the surrounding areas. We had a good chat with him. We are self sufficient in a van so didn't use the facilities but we would have used the washing up area if we had been staying longer. The price is also very good. We absolutely loved this site.

Disliked There's nothing to dislike unless you're into having a shower which the site doesn't have but again, we have our own shower anyway.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked The site had a spacious feel with lots of room in between individual pitches. I liked how they were mown in circles marked with triangular pitch signs which reminded me of golf greens. It was quiet with dark skies as there wasn’t any light pollution.

The signs on the farm to get to the camping area were spot on and Andy was very informative and helpful.

We will definitely be going back.

The eastern edge of the South Downs National Park is about 25 minutes’ drive away, with plenty of gorgeous trails to follow and popular spots like the Iron Age hillfort at Cissbury Ring (half an hour’s drive) and the National Trust-maintained Devil’s Dyke (35 minutes). Head north instead and you’ll get to the Surrey Hills for trails around Leith Hill (20 minutes); turn east and it’ll take you about 45 minutes to reach the Winnie the Pooh-themed trails of Ashdown Forest. Meanwhile, if you’ve had enough of all the activity you can see the scenery while riding the Bluebell Railway (45 minutes). For a more cultivated take on nature, set off for Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens (20 minutes), which has a sculpture park and vineyard on site, the shrub and tree collections of Winkworth Arboretum (half an hour) or the wild botanic garden at Wakehurst (35 minutes). And if you fancy an urban day or a beach trip, head south to Brighton (45 minutes).
