  • Knepp – one of the largest re-wilding projects in lowland Europe
  • Stay in one of our beautiful shepherd’s huts or luxurious tents
  • Or simply pitch your own in our exclusive Wildland campsite
The Knepp Wildland Project is a pioneering experiment in habitat creation, the largest of its kind in lowland Europe. Part-funded by Natural England it is at the cutting edge of current environmental thinking in terms of landscape-scale restoration which allows natural processes – driven by large ungulates – to take place on a significant and influential scale. Over the course of little over a decade, since the project began, we have seen a remarkable come-back of species, many of them red data species or nationally scarce. We can now boast 2% of the UK’s population of nightingales and one of the largest populations of purple emperor butterflies. From observing just these two species at Knepp, ecologists have gained new insights into their behaviour and habitat needs, demonstrating that the Knepp Wildland Project, with its open-ended, non-goal orientated ethos, has ground-breaking scientific value. Join us on one of our vehicle-based safaris or guided walking tours and experience our profusion of birds, mammals, butterflies, beetles, reptiles, plants and fungi in a setting that feels as wild and dynamic as the African bush. Knepp Wildland campsite is located in the heart of our unique 3,500 acre rewilding project. Tranquil, beautifully designed, eco-friendly and surrounded by stunning wild countryside our campsite is perfect for a quiet break away from it all. Here nature is king, and you have the chance to encounter some of the UK’s rarest and most spectacular wildlife within walking distance of your tent or shepherd’s hut. Designed to be in keeping with the surroundings of the rewilding project our campsite is a peaceful haven set in wonderful natural scenery. Wherever possible we’ve used reclaimed and recycled materials for the construction of the campsite, including our beautiful and ingenious Camp Kitchen. We are passionate about using ethical and environmentally-friendly products, and alternative energy where feasible. Our luxury accommodation comprises two Treehouses, three hand-built Shepherd's Huts, two Yurts, and two spacious Bell Tents. Our exclusive Pitch Your Own site in a lovely wildflower meadow on the edge of an ancient wood comprises only ten pitches to ensure peace and privacy. We have flushing loos and luxurious hot-water showers available for all our guests, as well as beautiful composting loos, a hot open air shower and funky open air bath house for the more adventurous.
