At an hour from London and therefore a handy last-minute escape from the big smoke, the luxury safari tents at Feather Down Farms – Canfields Farm are on an organic beef farm near Horsham (20 minutes’ drive) in West Sussex. Here’s your chance for a rural adventure combined with all manner of little comforts.
Each spacious canvas hideaway comes decked out with quality bedding, towels in the showers, a well-equipped kitchen and lots of space for everyone to get together in comfort around the dining table and on cosy sofas.
Please note that there is no electricity or wifi in the safari tents. They are lit by a combination of candles and oil lamps, and woodburning stoves (firewood supplied) double up as heaters and cookers.
Other thoughtful touches include a covered timber pavilion, so wet weather won’t stop you devouring alfresco suppers knocked up on your barbecue. This is also the place to get together for pizza fresh from the wood-fired oven. You’re also close to four local pubs in Rudgwick (ten minutes’ walk) and a field from an award-winning coffee shop.
Luxurious it may be, but Canfields is well set up for families too. Kids can have a scramble around in the playground or knock a football about – or you can take them den-building and stream-damming in the bluebell woods, where you might see deer and rare butterflies or hear woodpeckers.
Your hosts Tim and Sarah Bargman are happy to teach you all about their cows, and introduce you to their friendly horses, donkeys and sheep – not forgetting the free-range hens. Other animal-related experiences include egg collecting and bottle-feeding the lambs (in spring).

Local attractions
Choose between the North and South Down Ways for tons of walking and cycling (hire bikes 10 minutes’ drive away) challenges, or go easier on yourselves and follow scenic towpath walks along the Wey and Arun Canal. Anglers can go casting for carp at the local fishing lake (10 minutes), and there are several golf courses within 15 minutes by car.
For dressy days out, there’s racing at Goodwood (45 minutes), Fontwell Park (40 minutes) or Ascot (an hour). If you should need a new outfit for the occasion, the market towns of Chichester (50 minutes) and Horsham (20 minutes) have plenty of indie shops to plunder, as well as museums and art galleries to nose around.
If a day on the beach is what’s needed, Worthing (45 minutes) has a sandy strip as well as a pier to mooch around and lots of street-food cafés to graze in. When only wildlife will do, treat the kids to flying displays at Huxley’s Birds of Prey Centre and Gardens (25 minutes), or take them to meet the penguins and reindeer at Birdworld (45 minutes).

No refunds within 1 week of arrival date.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Bookings cannot be amended within 7 day(s) of arrival.
If you need to cancel or amend your booking, please give as much notice as possible so that someone else has the chance to book. You may wish to buy holiday insurance for cancellations and for your property/injury whilst away.

Payment
A 15% non-refundable deposit is payable now. Feather Down - Canfields Farm will debit the balance from your card 10 weeks before arrival, or if the arrival date is sooner than 10 weeks then the balance will be taken immediately.
You can also opt to pay the full amount at the time of your booking, or at any point before the due date.
