General

  • Secluded campsite on a working family-run farm
  • Back to basics camping on the water's edge
  • Close to Chichester, Goodwood and the South Downs

Wild camping – in a harbour? Get back to basics in a wide open field with a wild camping vibe at West Sussex's Manor Farm Harbour Camping, scenically set on the edge of a field at the foot of the Chidham Peninsula in the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

There's easy access from the farm to the local pebbly beach and the coastal footpath, and it's within easy reach of the seaside towns of West Wittering, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton as well as the South Downs, Arundel, Chichester, Brighton and Portsmouth.

Manor Farm has portaloos and cold running water (please note there are no on-site showers). Fires are allowed on pitches in hired firepits made from old farm machinery; logs and kindling are available to buy throughout your stay.

To sort eats and supplies, pubs and small shops can be found in neighbouring villages, and nearby village Chidham has a traditional local pub dishing up good food.

The farm welcomes dogs at all times.

Please note that the grass access track to the remote camping field occasionally becomes impassable following heavy rain. A paddock nearer to the farmhouse as an alternative which still has harbour views and the same amenities is used then.

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Please note that the remote wild camping field is accessed by a grass track which very occasionally becomes impassable after heavy rain. In these circumstances an alternative paddock nearer to the farmhouse is used. This has harbour views and the same amenities.

We had a fantastic weekend camping at Manor Farm. It's a lovely spot with great views and an excellent place to get away from it all. We were very well looked after by the family and also got a once in a lifetime ride in a combine harvester! We'll definitely be back.

    Disliked:

Only 1 portaloo. I think another placed at the other end of field as well would have been beneficial. The water from the only tap was not nice to drink.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review and we are glad you enjoyed your stay. We are slightly confused about your comment regarding the portaloos as the second one was unlocked and the first one cleaned on Saturday when more people arrived. The loos are sited to be out of the sun and out of view from the shore. We hope to see you again soon.

Peaceful campsite. Huge spacious and level pitches - could barely see neighbouring tents they were so far away! Lovely view (in places as hedges obscure the view from most parts of the field) and amazing walk round to Chidham. The wildlife is incredible - even had deer wandering through the camping field. Huge variety of waterfowl and lots of kestrels hovvering. Swallows are a bit crazy - they fly metres away from you and are stunning to watch. Campfires allowed although when we were there no logs could be provided. Fortunately we'd brought our own otherwise we'd have been completely stuck for cooking food! Portaloos were kept very clean and well stocked.

    Disliked:

There is zero signage. The owners are lovely but unless they are available when you arrive it's tricky to know where to go/where to get water etc. The campsite is utterly peaceful but some sort of canon goes off at irregular intervals throughout the day from early in the morning - poss from the harbour??
Pitch up needs to make it clear that logs are not always available.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review and helpful comments and we are glad you enjoyed your stay. We have reviewed the directions given on PitchUp and hope these will be implemented as soon as possible. It seems that our discrete tepee signs were not described in the information given. We are always happy to see you at the farmhouse, to give you directions and information regarding water and logs and access to the beach etc.. We had already advised PitchUp that logs may not be available at busy times on the farm especially during harvest but this had not been updated in the information given to you. Now you know where we are we hope to see you again soon.

Ideal location and our second year here for the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Close enough to the pub for a pie and a pint but really quiet next to the sea.

    Disliked:

There was no water container this year unlike last which was disappointing. While happy with the portable loo as advertised more than one would have been useful. Bring your own loo roll!

    Disliked:

Only running water was 1 mile away from industrial hosepipe, that tasted plastic.
Expensive for what it was and to charge an additional £10 to hire a small firepit with 3 logs seemed over the top.

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback following your stay last weekend. To clarify for future campers the water is taken directly from our house mains supply and is located on the access track a quarter of a mile from the camping field. We usually supply five large logs together with a handful of chipwood with the firepits. These are delivered directly to your pitch.
This is a beautiful remote field overlooking the harbour and we are keen to make as little impact as possible. We cannot, therefore, provide any permanent facilities there. We also restrict the number of pitches so the field never becomes crowded. This form of wild camping is very popular giving campers access to a unique and unspoilt location. We hope this information will be helpful to future visitors.
