If you're a wildlife watcher, go to spot species around the South Downs National Park, or take a boat safari out in Arundel via the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, which also arranges local pond dipping and other events for kids. Coastwards, bring the buckets and spades to peaceful West Wittering, to the Harbour Park flumes of Littlehampton and to the beach and pier of Bognor Regis all under half an hour away. Sea dogs and nautical sorts can also visit the historic dockyards of Portsmouth to see old ships including the Mary Rose, HMS Warrior and Nelson's HMS Victory, or to take the ferry to the Isle of Wight for a day trip. Historic houses and ancient buildings are all around too, like excellent Arundel Castle, Fishbourne Roman Palace, the country houses of Parham and Petworth, and the Norman cathedral and Tudor market cross of county capital Chichester.
