The shepherd's hut

General

  • Green field site over six acres, in the grounds of the a country pub
  • Five minutes' drive from Billingshurst and Wisborough Green
  • Modern toilet and shower block with wheelchair-accessible unit

A site in the grounds of the 16th-century Bat and Ball Country Pub, surrounded by six acres of inn estate and just under an hour from London? If that sounds like dream holiday material, then sign up for a lushly scenic stay at Oakfields Camping five minutes from the villages of Billingshurst and Wisborough Green in West Sussex.

Oakfields is right on the edge of the South Downs National Park, minutes' walk from comely canals and within 30 minutes' drive of also-comely English villages like Petworth and Midhurst: be sure to wear your explorer's hat for this trip...

Once you've worked up an appetite from wandering the Downs, canals and villages of West Sussex, you won't have to go far to build your strength back up – head to Haywards Restaurant, in the Bat and Ball, a few steps from your pitch, for food and drinks to while the evening away.

This is an all-grass site, so there's plenty of room to kick back and relax after dinner, or you can hang around in the Bat and Ball and soak up the atmosphere.

Very clean and tidy showers and toilets, the pub was fully booked for food but they made an exception for us and booked us in last minute, pub does get busy but it’s worth it the food was outstanding.

    Disliked:

the pitches are very muddy but to be expected this time of year, saying that as long as you drive into the pitches as instructed you won’t get stuck and netting under all the pitches so you won’t sink

Spacious small site, very relaxed, quite friendly for small people ...24/09/2019

Spacious small site, very relaxed, quite friendly for small people with adjacent pub and gardens. Beer good in pub, food was good but limited menu choice. Very welcoming hosts upon arrival with good selection of pitch options.

    Disliked:

Toilet and shower block rather dirty - the gents went 48 hours without being cleaned. When cleaned they were spotless however, so fair play.
Noisy neighbours (group of younger adults) pitching up on the last night of our stay and partying until 2:30am.
Dog poo which appeared next to our trailer tent overnight courtesy of (I suspect) another inconsiderate neighbour. :(

Pricey for what it was, but then it's Sussex and everything is pricey.

This is a very good campsite with the cleanest showers and toilets I have ever known .The pub next door has a lovely garden to sit in right next to camp site although the drinks are a little higher priced than some places the atmosphere in the garden is worth it . If I was to say any thing not good it would be the Gatwick flights up to late at night but this would be the same which ever campsite you were in the area.
Hope this is helpful to anyone who wants to stay around here for the Fishers farm or any other reason. By the way you can pick up the wi fi from the Bat and Ball pub in the campsite.

Local attractions

This part of West Sussex is a lovely locale and is crammed with things to see and do, such as the county's stately homes and historic houses, busy market towns, old and pretty villages, and – natch – the splendid Sussex seaside.

The 260-square-mile stretch of chalk hills that make up South Downs National Park are only a mile from Oakfields Camping. Many a hike is to be had here, including along the local stretch of the South Downs Way from Billingshurst, east to Eastbourne or west to Winchester, and the coastal walks around the white cliffs of the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head.

Family adventures at Fishers Farm Park are easily accessible from the site for family members of all ages; at nearby Horsham, take the crew to stalk each other through the violet labyrinth of the local paintball centre, or to the 90 acres of Chesworth Farm.

Also nearby is Petworth Park, a National Trust mansion with arty works by the likes of Turner and Blake, and a 700-acre landscaped park with the biggest herd of fallow deer in England.
