  • Spacious pitches at a 260-acre Surrey estate near Cranleigh
  • A 15-minute drive to Winkworth Arboretum; 40 minutes to the coast
  • Fishing and social club on site; profits support local charity
A holiday for yourselves, and you get to do good for others at the same time? It’s a win-win situation when you stay at Springbok Campsite, part of a secluded estate on the border of Surrey and West Sussex. The estate is run as a charity that provides accommodation and support for former seafarers, and any profits made by the campsite will be fed back into providing services for the residents. Concerned you may have to sacrifice certain facilities in order to support this worthy cause? Not a bit of it – this is a lovely site that’s part of a 260-acre estate made up of farmland, forest and formal gardens. You’ll be able to take walks around at your leisure, perhaps stopping in at the pretty walled garden or picking up a day pass for some fishing on the one-acre lake. Dog-friendly pitches here are spacious and fuss-free, and have access to basic shower and toilet facilities, plus a camp kitchen/washing-up shack. Guests are also welcome to stop in for a drink at the on-site social club. Barbecue evenings at your pitch are permitted too, if you’d like – there are shops 10 minutes’ drive away in Cranleigh for all the bits you’ll need. (Please note that barbecues must be raised off the ground and disposed of responsibly once they have cooled down.) If a country walk and pub are musts on your rural break, you’ll be pleased to hear that both are on hand – in fact, you could combine both with a stroll to one of the hostelries within a 30/45-minute walk. For other outings nearby you’ll have a choice of heading north to the Surrey Hills, west to the South Downs National Park or south to the coast (about 40 minutes away).

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Quiet site, well set out hard standing pitches. Bar in main house welcoming, residents very friendly

Disliked Only dislike was when getting water, could do with something sorting by the tap, was really muddy but then it was February when we went. That’s the only thibg, a minor point overall.

From the manager: Hello Allan

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review.
We are pleased you enjoyed the peace and quiet and found the pitches well set out and great to hear you had friendly welcome from our residents in the bar.

We appreciate your feedback about the water tap area - February has certainly been a very wet and muddy one! We will be looking at what improvements we can make when we update the facilities.

We hope to welcome you back again soon.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Had a fantastic couple of nights, despite the weather! The grounds around the main house were lovely, especially the oriental garden, and had a very warm welcome in the social club. Washing up hut was decent.

Disliked The toilet block was very small and tired. Only one sink and lots of cracked tiles. A few more hooks and a shelf would help. Only one of the sinks was working in the washing up hut.

From the manager: Hello Dale,
Thank you so much for your lovely review. We are really pleased you had a fantastic couple of nights with us, especially despite the weather! Its great to hear you enjoyed the grounds and felt welcome in our social club.

Thank you also for your helpful feed back regarding the toilet block and washing-up area. We acknowledge that although they are kept clean by our housekeeping team they are basic and are now showing signs of age. Plans are underway this year to make future improvements in this area.

We hope to welcome you and your family back again soon.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Hardstanding pitches and grass in excellent condition and large. Very gentle slope. Very quiet (apart from Gatwick planes which are relatively unobtrusive). Beautiful rural surroundings. Lots of forest walks with loads of birdlife (it was very muddy when we were there but there has been excessive rain this winter so far). Facilities are basic but adequate and clean. Lots of hot water in shower. Washing up area very good and indoors, which is a bonus!
Felt very welcome in the bar in the main house for a drink - lovely views over the grounds.
Happy to be supporting Care Ashore charity with our stay.

Disliked Only a couple of minor things...hand drier in ladies not working very well and could do with a squeegy and mop in the facilities to keep the floors cleaner (muddy footprints).

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much Elizabeth for your lovely review. We are really pleased you enjoyed the peaceful settings, the pitches, and the woodland walks, and that you felt welcome during your stay with us.
Thank you also for your helpful feedback about the facilities - we will be looking into the hand dryer and floor cleaning. We truly appreciate your support of Care Ashore and look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Nice level solid ground, free from mud etc club house is nice, warm and friendly staff. A pleasure to sit inside and have a drink.

Disliked Would recommend hard standing cross tongue to electrical and water points to safe walking over the water logged grass in front of these areas as a suggestion.

Local attractions

If you like a good garden visit on your break, you’ve come to the right spot – it won’t take long at all to reach the likes of the National Trust gardens at 121-acre Winkworth Arboretum (15 minutes’ drive) and Nymans (35 minutes), with woodlands, a lake and natural play areas. The colourful Ramster Gardens (15 minutes) and pretty Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens (35 minutes) are certainly worth adding to the list too. If you’ve brought the kids along, a trip to Fishers Farm Park (15 minutes) may well be on the cards for tractor rides, mini golf, treetop trails, pony rides and lots of animals to meet (plus indoor play areas in case of dodgy weather). You might also like to see the big birds at Surrey Hills Falconry (20 minutes) or hit the beach in Worthing (40 minutes). No kids in your party? A day at Denbies Wine Estate (35 minutes) might appeal instead then – you can sign up for tours and tastings here, and there’s a lovely restaurant too.
