  • By the River Medway in Yalding, with river access for watersports
  • A 25-minute drive to Leeds Castle; half an hour to Sissinghurst
  • Pub, railway station and canoe hire within a five-minute walk
If your kind of retreat is one where you’re free to wade in the river, paddle downstream and spend evenings in a waterside pub, Riverview Camping and Caravans might be what you’ve been searching for. This peaceful site is right next to the River Medway, in the Kent village of Yalding… Naturally, that makes it a particularly fine spot for those aiming to launch their watersports kit while on a rural break, as it’s in the middle of the River Medway Canoe Trail from Tonbridge to Allington. There’s direct access to the river from the site, with a couple of slipways and a canoe hire place within a few minutes’ walk as well. The riverside setting is also a good one for those looking to settle down somewhere peaceful and pretty – but that’s not all this location has going for it. It’s also handily less than five minutes’ walk from the railway station, a coffee shop with a play area, and a lovely riverside pub/restaurant. Stroll for a little further (all of about 10 minutes) to get to the village centre for more pubs, takeaways, a tearoom, a bakery and the village shop. It’s all mighty convenient for those travelling without a car. Back at the site, basic amenities are in place – guests will have access to toilets and a washing-up area, but there’s no hot water available. Those hoping to spend the evening stoking a fire are in luck, as both campfires and barbecues are permitted on site.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Very friendly and helpful owners who gave us advice on where to pitch, local activities and cafes/pubs and spoke to a group of campers whose behaviour was not particularly respectful to the environment or other campers.
Would definitely come back again.
Lovely location on the river - we enjoyed taking our paddle boards and exploring.
Great campsite even when busy

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked It was a basic campsite and a good afternoon and evening. Convenient distance from south London, reasonably accessible by train unlike many. Drinkable water from all the taps. Fire pit provided and delivered logs in the afternoon. Toilets were acceptable and stocked with loo roll. River being right adjacent to the site is presumably great if you have equipment (we didn’t, but would bring something next time). There's a bit of a kids playground in the middle which they made use of. Friendly owner.

Disliked A bank holiday weekend meant it was a bit chocka in terms of number of tents and motor homes in — could the pitches be more formally demarcated to ensure a good spread out? Would have welcomed more space. Pitches near the gate will get road noise. A shower block would be an improvement but we were only staying 1 night so it wasn’t a problem.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked My two children 5 and 7 and i took our trailer tent for 3 nights/ 4 days. The owners are very helpful and kind and helped me when I couldnt get the trailer to hitch and unhitch. Kids loved the play area and being able to magnet fish in the river. Defiantly coming back again and would recommend this place if you want a friendly family location that will take you back to natural camping without wifi or technology, its perfect for just that. Every pitch has its own fire pit set up and there are sheep at the back of the field. Toilets are clean and there are many. No shower block but we got through with some wet wipes and cold water until we got home. We can't wait to go back.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We stayed for 2 nights with 2 tents and honestly had such a good time! Loved that everyone was out of their tents/motorhomes just having fun — it gave the place such a nice vibe. Our pitch was big enough, and the staff were really friendly and helpful. We’ll definitely be back!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Able to choose the pitch
The hosts were friendly

Disliked The facilities were not kept as clean as could have been, flushes not working properly in some toilets.
Sadly we also had neighbours that shouted and screamed at each other including at 3.30 am!
Dogs not on leads

Non-electric grass and earth pitch (riverside)

Liked Great communication, and a warm welcome.
Loved the pitch right on the riverbank absolutely beautiful
Less than 10 mins walk to a very good riverside pub
Fire pit on the pitch if you want to use it
You’re allowed to swim, paddle board, canoe in the river.
Nothing to complain about for us. We have a Motorhome with loo & hot water.
Lots of people camping with tents, camper and, mojos, and everyone was really well spaced out. Fab

Disliked Our friends have a camper van without facilities and they found the toilet block a little basic, with no lighting, and the washing-up facilities with only cold water a bit difficult, but we still had a lovely time

Local attractions

Pay a visit to the biggest collection of teapots in England. If such a thing wasn’t on your travel wishlist previously, it will be now – after all Teapot Island is only five minutes’ walk away. Also close by is The Hop Farm (five minutes’ drive), likely to be a hit with young kids due to its small farm animals and soft play. Adults will be happy to find things catering to their taste too. Fishing activities are available at Claygate Lakes (10 minutes) and at Mereworth Wines (10 minutes), taste test local wines and potions in the winery and taproom. If it’s the historical sort of stuff you’re mostly interested in, Leeds Castle (25 minutes) and Scotney Castle (25 minutes) will get that in full swing. Straight out of the 17th century, Knole Park (half an hour) is a National Trust site with a deer park, gatehouse tower and attics. Sissinghurst Castle Garden (half an hour) is another historical spot, with a Grade I-listed park and gardens. As for peaceful walks by the river and picnics in meadows, head to Teston Bridge Country Park (10 minutes).
