  • Rural site surrounded by woods and fields in the Kent Downs
  • Five minutes drive from Charing; 15 minutes from Leeds Castle
  • Close to the Pilgrims Way; 25 minutes' walk from the local pub
Lacton Manor Barn is a spacious rural site in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, five minutes’ drive from the village of Charing and with easy access from the M20. The pitches here are surrounded by fields (which sometimes house livestock) and natural woodlands, with a spring-fed lake nearby and views up to the Pilgrims Way and a vineyard. This is pared-back camping with no running water, toilets or showers, but drums of fresh water can be supplied. Guests are welcome to set up barbecues and campfires and get stuck into traditional outdoorsy activities like dam building and den making in the woods (there’s plenty of fallen wood to collect around the place for such things). Those looking to get out and about on foot can do so easily: there are plenty of footpaths and bridleways around, such as the Pilgrims Way, which passes nearby. You can even walk all the way to Canterbury along the North Downs Way should you wish; less ambitious types might prefer a stroll to the nearest pub, 25 minutes away on foot. Whatever kind of wandering you’ve got in mind, the folk on site are happy to offer ideas and advice.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (woodland)

Liked: Has got to be my new favourite camping place. back to basic wild camping in the woodland plenty of space campfires allowed so was a bonus for us. Trevor the host was very friendly asked if we needed water and gave us a barrel of water showed us to our pitch gave us a map of the farm explained a few things and left us to it but was only a call away if needed all in all a great place

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (woodland)

Liked: Took my son for his first ever camping experience. Trevor the host was friendly and helpful and guided us over to our pitch. The actual venue is fantastic and camping in its most organic form. As much fire wood as you could dream of and plenty of room to have an open fire for BBQs and even toasting mallows. The boy enjoyed climbing several trees, using the map handed out by Trevor to explore around the area and down to the lake. I've made a Lifetime memory with my son I will treasure forever . thanks Trevor for your wonderful venue and hospitality. 100% reccomend.

Disliked: My expectations were exceeded. Where was nothing to dislike.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The area was lovely, the woods were enticing and wild with trails. The whole place had loads of character, and Trevor was a top bloke. There was plenty of free firewood and it felt like we were just free to do what we wanted.

Disliked: No facilities, but we knew this going in. My only gripe with this is that we stayed on the grass field outside the woods. For number twos, we had to venture into the woods where people were staying, so it was a little bit risky, poopwise.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (woodland)

Liked: We are bushcrafters. The wood pitches are ideal to do that: Trevor allows you to use the fallen wood to build a small shelter or to cook on. Only tarp and hammock? No problem. Where we were, we occasionally heard the distant train, but nothing annoying or bothersome. The distance between pitches is large enough to not hear or see other campers. The pitches all are clean, no stray rubbish and not a bin in sight. Tells you about the type of people visiting here. As advertised: there are no toilets, but, if required (does a bear sh*t in the woods?) Trevor can provide a toilet tent. We've been bears...

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Would 100% recommend. It was just us and the sheep :) If you're looking for a wild camping experience with a top quality welcome, this is it. Trevor provided us with water and plenty of logs for our fire. He even gave us a map of his land for us to go explore. We felt totally free and looked after at the same time. He set us up and left us to it. We had a perfect night.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (woodland)

Liked: Absolutely loved our stay at Lacton Manor! Our spot in the woods was very peaceful and picturesque. The pitches are well spaced so apart from the occasional walker we didn't see anyone else. Trevor was on hand should we need anything but pretty much left us to it. If you want a back to basics camping experience then this is definitely worth a trip! We will be back.

Disliked: Nothing
