  • Quiet dog-friendly site on a small farm on the edge of Stone
  • A 10-minute drive from Rye and 15 minutes from Camber Sands
  • Pubs within five minutes’ drive of the site; barbecues are permitted
Come and make your roost at a small, quiet farm site with super views over farmland and an excellent track record for sublime sunrises. Mackley Farm is only 15 minutes’ drive from Camber Sands, which is an unusual beach on Sussex terms, since it has gorgeous golden sand (so, pack your bucket and spades, everyone…). Rural is the patch at Mackley Farm, however. There are sheep grazing in the surrounding fields, which is why only well-behaved dogs are welcome. If all those rural views are making you crave adventure, just saunter onto the walks in the local area. There are pubs within five minutes’ drive of the site, and many more watering holes within a couple miles of the site, so there’s always a way to refill or grab a cool drink. The local area is pretty intriguing too, especially for the budding historians among you. Once a medieval citadel, Rye (10 minutes’ drive) has half-timbered houses, a 14th-century tower and a former bottling factory which has been turned into the Rye Castle Museum and showcases town memorabilia. In Tenterden (15 minutes), sort through shops or stepping onto the steam rain that runs along the 10-mile Kent & East Sussex Railway. There’s a small shop closer by if you need something quick to stick on the barbecue; it’s in Appledore, five minutes’ drive away. On the edge of Stone in Oxney, this well-maintained site has plenty of space for everyone, as well as a toilet block. Handily for those who fancy a post-barbecue stroll, it’s only 200 metres from the Royal Military Canal, which has a peaceful towpath.

Local attractions

Swirl, sniff and sip your way around Chapel Down Tenterden Vineyard Park (10 minutes’ drive), which runs wine tastings and tours of the winery for red, white and rosé appreciators. You’ll probably want to schedule this activity on a different day than a visit to Action Watersports (20 minutes), because watersports like wakeboarding, water-skiing and paddleboarding will require all of your attention. In Hastings (40 minutes), catch the funicular up the cliffside, check out the castle or get yourself a spot on one of the fishing trips that depart from the seafront. In the opposite direction, Sissinghurst Castle Garden (half an hour) is a historic spot too. The gardens were taken over by writer Sackville-West and there are tours that will explain his creative thinking. Eager to stay active on your break? A top place to visit in that case is Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (35 minutes), where there are cycling and mountain biking trails, as well as a Go Ape course for those who aren’t afraid to take their activities into the treetops.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Very friendly owner, a small field along a driveway with only 8 pitches, but plenty of room between each and a flushing toilet! All have a fabulous view over the fields and is a 30 minute walk to a good pub through vineyards and along local roads.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Views were spectacular. The host was very helpful

Disliked: Quite a sloped site for tents, you have to get your bed in the right place to stop you rolling off! I think the site was overbooked, so space was very limited, we had to pitch our tents much closer that fire regs suggest. There is a huge rut in the road as you come onto the site, on which I grounded my car!
