Around the site

General

  • Quiet, well-maintained dog-friendly site in Shadoxhurst
  • A 30-minute drive from Dungeness, Rye and Winchelsea
  • Well-stocked on-site fishing lake with roach, rudd and perch

Planning an upcoming Kentish caper? With five acres of woodland, field and lake to its name, The Firs Fishery and Campsite covers more than a few bases. Green surrounds? Check. Low levels of light pollution? Absolutely. Oh, and here's something to reel you in – this place has a fishing lake for the exclusive use of guests.

This site may be in a rural spot, but this is far from the back of beyond. The village of Shadoxhurst is about a mile away (that's a 20-minute stroll through country lanes if you fancy stretching your legs), with a medieval chapel and top-rated local pub to its name. Looking for big-city fashion without leaving the countryside? Ashford designer outlet is under a quarter of an hour's drive away. The Kent coast is also close at hand, with seaside towns like Dungeness, Rye and Winchelsea all reachable in around half an hour.

Back at base, a secure horse paddock and plenty of space for dog exercise means a warm welcome for creatures great and small. Keep your eyes peeled for animals of the wild variety, too: one of the lakes on site has been given over to nature, and friendly waterfowl are known to waddle over the grass from time to time. For food, outdoor cookouts are on the cards as long as your barbecue is raised off the ground (you can also prebook a firepit but please don't bring your own along).

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

Facilities/activities including fishing are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

The hosts were wonderful and totally hospitable. The campsite was clean, facilities good and made for a great mini staycation. As it wasn't overly busy we had the space we desired but the hosts were available to us if we needed them. Will definitely revisit

    The adjacent wooded byway

    Disliked:

We expected much more after reading the reviews and was rather dissapointed with the reality. The campsite has two small fields, with the owners large house and out buildings bang smack in the middle. There is no real privacy or space for the number of pitches on offer and feels like camping in someone's back garden. Individual campfires aren't allowed which is a big part of the camping experience. If you are into fishing and don't mind fishing in a small pond then you'll be fine.
There are many ducks on site, also goats and cows in nearby fields.
The location is a bit hit or miss and a bit trashy in places, there is however a byway that runs adjacent to the campsite which is a lovely wooded walk.
The owners are nice and friendly, overall the place felt cramped and lacked privacy. Not convinced the Firs Fishery is best served as a campsite or even a fishery.

From the manager...

What an interesting review, and one that surprised us!
We offered any pitch that suited, and when you look at the review score accommodation is two, but YOU provided your own tent??
I guess we don't suit everyone, but we do make clear what is on offer, and the price reflects this, glad all our other customers were happy, never mind Eh!!

Local attractions

There's a reason Kent is known as the 'Garden of England', you know: this part of the world is home to well-kept man-made landscapes and vistas of rolling farmland. Fans of the former may well appreciate teeing off at the local golf club (10 minutes' drive) or heading down to the Royal Military Canal (10 minutes) for bike rides along the water's edge. Rural ramblers, meanwhile, should check out the four-mile Wye Downs circular walk (25 minutes).

Travellers with kids unwilling to be dragged up hill and down dale have plenty of options, too. The Rare Breeds Centre (10 minutes), a historic steam train (15 minutes) and stunning Bodiam Castle (30 minutes) are just some of the family-friendly jaunts to be had hereabouts.

Like to be beside the seaside? Dungeness' marshland landscape is home to abundant birdlife (pack your binoculars and head to the RSPB reserve to find out more), as well as an old lighthouse and the largest shingle beach in Europe (25 minutes). Head to the two genteel towns of Rye and Winchelsea, meanwhile, for castle ruins, independent book shops and vineyards, or scamper over to the dunes at Camber Sands (all around half an hour's drive).

Must see

  • Ashford Designer Outlet (4.7 miles)
  • Kent & East Sussex Railway (6.5 miles)
  • Port Lympne Wild Animal Park (7.6 miles)

National Trust

  • Smallhythe Place (6.9 miles)
  • Lamb House (10.9 miles)
