  • Peaceful wildlife haven on a farm site in the High Weald countryside
  • Great Dixter House & Gardens 10 minutes’ drive; Hastings 35 minutes
  • Woodlands and vineyards on site; firepits; footpath through the site
Expansive views over vineyards and ancient woodlands, and walks among the wildflowers await guests at pretty Stone Pit Meadows. A wildlife haven in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this site is a little (well… actually, a rather large) slice of relaxation on a 45-acre farm in Kent. This is a place where you can alfresco activities like cooking on the firepit and unwinding in the private seating area outside your unit. With toilets and showers on site, you should feel fresh and ready to set out on foot over the local country lanes and public footpaths (there is one running right through the site). Or you can stick to the designated routes on site, through meadows and woodlands or around the vines. With the villages of Newenden and Bodiam within a five-minute drive (and within walking distance: 45 minutes, and an hour and 10 minutes respectively), you’ll have a wide range of traditional village pubs to choose from, as well as cool riverside cafés for sweet treats and live music. Plus, of course, there are food shops to build a stash of supplies for back at base. Set sail directly from the boating station in Newenden (or self-launch if you’ve got the kit) and meander down the River Rother by canoe, kayak or paddleboard (if you’ve got the balance for it). Don't worry if that's not for you – you could instead take a guided boat tour to Bodiam Castle and back, or board the steam railway to chug your way along the region’s historic railway line.

Bell tent

Liked: We loved absolutely everything about this site. The welcome was warm and it from there it only got better: a truly beautiful wild-swimming pond; impeccable facilities; extras and incidentals everywhere (right down to the marshmallows and cool box)- it was genuinely faultless. We can't wait to go back!

Disliked: There was nothing at all to dislike!

1 bedroom shepherd's hut (ensuite, no pets)

Liked: We had the most peaceful relaxing weekend staying in one of the stunning shepherds huts at Stone Pit Meadows. The hut was beautifully decorated and we were very well accommodated. Nicola the host was so friendly and welcoming, she arranged for a birthday balloon as requested and even added a bowl of local cherries and a slice of cake with a candle which was a lovely suprise. We enjoyed some nice country walks and sitting by the fire pit toasting marshmellows that were also provided. Would definitely book again and highly recommend! Thanks for a great weekend Stone Pit Meadows!

Local attractions

Intrinsically linked to the late gardener and author Christopher Lloyd, Great Dixter House & Gardens (10 minutes’ drive) is a seasonal place of pilgrimage for the green-fingered. Themed zones include an area of long grass punctuated by wild orchids; the Horse Pond, which attracts herons and kingfishers; and the Peacock Garden, with bird-shaped topiary bushes. Run by the National Trust, Sissinghurst Castle Garden (15 minutes) was the home of 20th-century author Vita Sackville-West, who would write in a room in the Tower, where she perhaps drew inspiration from the far-reaching views of the estate. Stroll through the formal gardens before stopping off at the plant shop to pick up a horticultural souvenir. For a day at the seaside, head to Hastings (35 minutes), where you can grab some fish and chips to devour on the pebbly beach, stroll along the wide pier (where you might catch the odd event, too) and take the funicular to the top of West Hill for views all the way to Beachy Head.
